The compass plants are in bloom at the Tipton Prairie Park in Bloomington, Illinois. The prairie dock plant, a very closely related species that can hybridize with compass plant will bloom about a week or two later.

Compass Jellyfish are tinged orange-brown and have 16 dark brown V-shaped lines radiating from the centre which divide the bell into 32 lobes around the edge. They have four long, frilly mouth arms which extend below their 24 tentacles. Compass Jellyfish change their sex from male to female as they mature. They can give a very painful sting.
If you are stung, the best thing to do initially is to rinse the wound in salt water. Rinse with vinegar (if you have some) as the acid will neutralise the toxin in the sting. Urinating on a sting is unlikely to help. Gently scraping the affected area with a credit card or razor will remove any remaining nematocysts (the tiny poisonous sacs released by the jellyfish tentacles).
'La Rosa de los Vientos' is a common symbol in navigation, marking the compass points (or the directions of the winds).
In the Galician city of La Coruña in Spain, a huge mosaic panel has been created by the coastline in the Parque de La Torre. It features the star-shaped Rosa de los Vientos but also contains the symbols of the seven Celtic nations: Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Brittany, Cornwall, the Isle of Man and Galicia.

The service now has two breaks during the day one between 1024 and 1112 and then for an hour betwen 1412 and 1512 on an afternoon. Solo W87 is seen parked in Middlesbrough Bus Station towards the end of the first break.

This sunflower look-a -like grows over 6 ft tall and gets its name from the fact that large leaves at the bottom of the plant almost always orient themselves with North & South.

Who cares about the old, good compass in times of GPS navigation devices sewed into a table clock and your dog's collar? I've found it in my old junk box that my Mom still keeps on the balcony. I was about to throw it away 'coz it was slightly broken but then i've managed to take it apart and fix the internals. It even works!
