Different compasses in the world

Graphite drawing on paper

Used for both horizontal and vertical measuring. No math was involved to resect our postion on a map to find our locatation. Nice and sweet! I've done some amazing things with this and still use it.

A collection of other compass rose jars, mainly to show that the size of the rectangle doesn't matter. The one with the Skittles logo points out the real use of these jars - geeks need a place to keep their skittles.

Without skittles, coding would come to a standstill.

It's not often that I have company who aren't afraid of ponying up good cash for awesome food. So when my cousin Arden told me he'd be in NYC for the last weekend of Restaurant Week, you can bet I jumped to make reservations for every single dinner while he was in town.

Compass, my selection for the second night, is located on the west side of 70th and Broadway. At first glance, it looks like it is under massive construction. NYC, I have come to find, is an old city that is always undergoing massive construction.

Walking in to the restaurant, I was greeted with a sense of casual elegance. The ambiance was perfect, with warm lighting and slow instrumental jazz playing.

The decor had the kind of "serious business" vibe that must make this place a magnet for business lunches and dinners, yet it was playful enough to be just casual enough that you could have an intimate dinner with a small group of friends without feeling like you needed to be suited up to the nines.

The restaurant also has a great bar area to the left of the entrance where we passed the Friday night drinks crowd on our way in.

My internal compass sucks. I like directions with the words Left and Right, not East and West. And once I know a path I'm good, but don't ask me to explain it to you.

For five years I lived in the same house and worked at the same job and picked up the kids from the same day care. I drove the same route every day. And I liked it that way. It's called auto pilot and for me it's a good thing because I have enough stuff on my mind. I don't want to have to think about where I'm going and how to get there.

So now I'm in a new house and the kids (two of them anyway) are at different schools. And the auto pilot apparently has not been programmed appropriately yet. Or maybe I have too much on my mind. Either way, in the last week I've - can I say it? - fucked up. All I need to do is take 94 to 35 to 92. It seems easy. It is easy! But one day I failed to make the first switch over and then less than a week later I made the first one and missed the second one. And the saddest part is that I don't even notice until many miles down the road when suddenly things aren't quite looking familiar anymore!

I figured it out and over the two days I drove over 26 miles out of my way.

I was on auto pilot, but apparently the new route hasn't been fully downloaded to the system yet.

A Compass Enviro lays over between journeys on the 74 to Horsham via Coolham.

Looking at the nature of the route (and its narrow roads), it is surprising this route maintains even a two-hourly frequency but we had a load in double figures throughout.

Remarkably, the driver put up the destination, moved up to the stand and picked up waiting passengers more than 5 minutes before departure time - the properly waited for the scheduled departure time.

Given the comments from locals, I guess this level of hospitality is not the norm, but on a chilly day with little in the way of waiting facilities, it was very welcome.

Moral Compass started the band after a lack of musical activity in their lives and area. They have recorded an EP and they are now planning to release a debut album in the next few months.

Compass 28 yachts were designed and built in Sydney Australia between 1970 and 1981. They are of constructed of fibreglass with an encapsulated ballast long keel, masthead sloop rig and auxiliary diesel engine. There are six berths, galley with dinette and a private head compartment. Compass Yachts led the production of keelboats of this size in Australia, with around 800 Compass 28s and 29s being built.

I was going to buy a sun compass for £20 but couldnt bring myself to part with the money so I spent a bit time on the web finding out the position of the sun rise an where it would set for the middle of each month and came up with this. Save it , resize it, print it and laminate it. This is where the sun will rise and fall in the North East of England but it should only be a couple of degrees out for the rest of the UK
