In the summer of 1978, the Southern Pacific leased 15 GE P30CH locomotives from Amtrak to operate their Peninsula Commute service between San Francisco and San Jose, California. This arrangement was necessitated by an Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) order that required SP to return overdue freight cars, leading to a shortage of suitable locomotives for their commuter operations.
Why did that SUCK? Because I had actually convinced my parents to spend an evening rush hour in San Jose on our California vacation so that I could photograph SP SDP45s and GP9s and GP40P-2s. When the trains started arriving with Pooches, I was distraught.
I did get some GEEPs and one 40P-2, but not a single SDP45.
As the decades have passed, however, I have come to accept my fate and actually find my pics of Pooches on Plugs pretty neat.
I'm back and on catch-up!
Next few weeks is all about Thailand - starting with Bangkok!

It’s 6:18AM in the town of Gaithersburg, Maryland and the second Marc of the morning, P872, arrives on time bound for D.C. Today brought us Marc #86, one of eight SC-44 locomotives Marc roster. Found it neat to see the most modern thing on the roster be paired with a full set of Sumitomo cars dating back to the early 90s.

This historic railroad bridge across the Willamette River in Salem was converted to a pedestrian and bike bridge in 2009. For the energy efficient, it is a great way to commute to and from work.
Commuting along the Grand Canal in Venice. An admittedly more scenic commute than mine.
