Sixth grader Jaedyn Schlagel considers her gift list. She was shopping for toys for a toddler at Walmart Monday as part of Wahpeton Middle School's community service project. The students purchased gifts for underprivileged children, that will be distributed through Richland County Social Services.

In November 2010, Pueblo West Brownie Troop 1122 began planning their service goals for the 2011 Girl Scout Cookie sale beginning in January.

There was an article in the Dec. 2 Pueblo Chieftain discussing the Pueblo County Weekend Backpack Program. At the troop’s Dec. 7th meeting, leader Leslie Perkins brought the article and read it to the girls. The girls, all second and third graders, were touched by the story and one Girl Scout mentioned that she had a school friend who benefited from this program.

The girls decided they wanted to give a treat to all of those kids and decided that any of their donated cookies would be given to the program. The troop made signs that were posted at their cookie booths advertising the program and were able to collect just under 100 boxes. Fortunately, news of their project spread and with the help of Angel Haxton, Product Sales Manager for Pueblo, they were able to procure over an additional 1,000 boxes to be given to the program. The troop had the opportunity to meet with John Dase and Suzanne Ortiz on April 30 to present their donation and to tour the Pueblo Care and Share facility and to assist in packing several boxes of food designated for the next week’s distribution. At their follow-up meeting on May 3 the girls debriefed on what they had learned and what their thoughts on hunger were. In a Brownie Circle, one by one, their thoughts were:

"It was very interesting to pack the boxes for the kids. It really made me think," said Abigail.

"It is sad to think that kids our age do not have food to eat on the weekends," Graycie said. "It made me feel good to know that they will have a special treat of our cookies so that they know we care about them."

"I think it is a great idea that there is a weekend program for kids to get food when they don’t have any at home," Paige said.

When asked about what they thought of the summer lunch program all the girls agreed that it was really important since many kids depend on it for their main food each day they are not in school.
