Southern's annual MLK Service Day sees students, faculty, and staff serve in a wide variety of capacities assisting projects all over the Chattanooga area.

“One home we worked on was owned by a nice woman named Miss Mary, who asked us hourly if we needed food or water. By the time we finished, the spray-painted ‘X’ was no longer visible and Mary said her house was the best-looking one on the block. “We visited the Lower 9th Ward, a once-vibrant community that lay still and desolate with concrete slabs where houses once stood and house numbers painted on overgrown driveways. No words can describe the feeling you have when looking at the remnants of a community so full of life. It gave our group more incentive to complete the various rebuilding projects we were working on.” -Rebecca Finnegan, Class of ‘10
