I stopped by Wrightsville Beach again today for about an hour. The nesting season begins, and I witnessed lots of mating activity. The first shot shows a Tern calling out, and later being joined by its mate.
Wrightsville Beach, NC. I usually point my camera towards the water cause the sun is with me, but I never get to shoot the nesting colony. In the morning, it is back-lit. I did today to get some different shots and different lighting. If nothing else, it's good practice shooting and processing.
Two Common Terns.
Sterna Hirundo
Birds living along the coast drink salt water. They do not seek fresh water even when it is available nearby. Like many seabirds, they have nasal glands that excrete the excess salt.
Nickerson Beach, NY
Wrightsville Beach was beautiful today at 6:30 am. It was interesting today watching some of the tern chicks beginning the first stages of flying.

'ONE METHOD OF COPING IN A HEATWAVE.'
Newly fledged and having escaped the confines of the tern raft, this juvenile enjoyed a prolonged bathing session. One of two juveniles, its sibling was nearby with the female parent bird in attendance.
BEST VIEWED LARGE.
Spotted during a boat trip from Ely to Cambridge today. Shortly afterwards I lost my lens hood overboard, but that is a different story.
It isn't clear whether the one on the wire is a chick being fed, or a female being wooed.
A juvenile Common Tern in flight.
Many thanks to all who take the time to view, comment or fave my images.
Took this photo as a large flock of Terns hanging out on Caladesi Island took flight and circled me.
Common Tern
It is best to shoot with a west wind so that the birds are flying towards you. While shooting the wind direction changed and came out of the east then suddenly all I would have shot were tail shots.
I spent the last month traveling in my RV in the Maritimes. It was wonderful, even though there weren't as many photo opportunities as I had hoped.
J'ai passé le dernier mois à voyager dans mon VR dans les maritimes. Quel bonheur, même si les occasions de photos n'ont pas été aussi nombreuses que je l'aurais espéré.
