The Common Terns at one of my local nature reserves have been showing really well close to the hide recently allowing some great opportunities for photographs. Be prepared for more to come. It's a real treat to be able to see these birds close up especially here in landlocked Surrey.
A failed attempt at supper. Hovering, the common tern spots it's fish, plunges, knifing into the water, earning the name 'stirker' along the Atlantic shore. It is also often called the Mackerel Gull. I'm not entirely pleased with this shot as the terns were quite fast, I was quite slow, and the light was fading.

And now for some Common Tern brooding. Tiny seabirds, shorebirds, ducklings and other nestlings alike all require brooding by parents. They nestle under the parent’s breast feathers or wings and snuggle in for a rest. This both provides warmth and comfort as well as safety from potential predators. In this frame, a pair of Common Terns are seeking comfort from their mama. At the end of the day, we all feel safer snug tight with our loved ones. Please, be careful and stay safe!
