At the beginning of the Vietnam War, there was little interest in a dedicated counterinsurgency (COIN) aircraft. The USAF was too committed to an all-jet, nuclear-capable force, while the US Army was satisfied with its helicopter fleet; the Navy concentrated on its carriers, and while the Marines were mildly interested, they lacked funding.

Vietnam was to change that. Horrendous losses among US Army UH-1s was to lead to a rethinking of helicopter doctrine, and pointed up the lack of a dedicated COIN aircraft. The USAF found itself depending on World War II-era A-26K Invaders, former US Navy A-1 Skyraiders, and converted trainers like the T-28 Trojan. The USAF also found itself in the market for a better forward air control (FAC) aircraft, due to the high loss rate of its O-1 Birddogs and O-2 Skymasters. Finally, the US Navy needed something to better cover its Mobile River Force units in the Mekong Delta, which could not always depend on USAF air support. In 1963, all three services issued a requirement for a new light design capable of performing as both a COIN and FAC aircraft. North American's NA-300 was selected in 1964 and designated OV-10A Bronco.

The OV-10 design drew heavily on independent research done at the China Lake research establishment, which in turn was inspired by the World War II P-38 Lightning fighter. The P-38 used a central "gondola" fuselage to concentrate all of its firepower along the centerline, which made for better accuracy; the OV-10 would do the same. As in the P-38, the engines were contained in twin booms that stretched back to the tail. The Bronco's four machine gun armament was placed in sponsons on either side of the fuselage, while ordnance was carried beneath the sponsons. To satisfy the USAF's requirements for a FAC aircraft, the two-man crew flew underneath a large, spacious canopy that gave them superb visibility. Because the Marines wanted an aircraft that could carry a Recon team, the fuselage was extended and, if the rear seat was removed, five paratroopers could be squeezed into the back, or two stretchers.

When the OV-10 arrived in Vietnam in 1968, there was a fear that the Bronco would be the jack of all trades and master of none. In fact, it proved to be excellent in all of its roles. As a FAC, it was a huge improvement over the slower O-1 and O-2; as a COIN aircraft, it was also a good aircraft, though it could not carry the same amount of ordnance as an A-1. The Navy equipped one squadron with OV-10As as VAL-4--nicknamed the "Black Ponies" for their dark green camouflage--and these were used extensively over the Mekong Delta. There were problems with the design: the airframe was actually too heavy for the engines, which left it underpowered, and ditching was invariably fatal for the pilot, as his seat tended to hurl forward into the instrument panel. Nonetheless, the Bronco turned in a sterling performance in Southeast Asia.

Though the Navy transferred its surviving Black Ponies to the Marines after the end of American involvement in Vietnam, the USAF and Marines would keep theirs for the next 20 years. For the 1970s and 1980s, the OV-10 replaced all other FAC designs in USAF service, aside from a handful of OA-37B Dragonfly squadrons. The Marines also kept their OV-10s and further refined the design by adding all-weather capability in the long-nosed OV-10D variant.

By the First Gulf War in 1991, the OV-10 was starting to show its age. The USAF began retiring its fleet even before Desert Storm; the Bronco was considered to be too slow to survive a modern air defense environment. Though the Marines used some of their OV-10Ds, the loss of two aircraft also led the USMC to retire their Broncos after war's end. Both services chose jets as replacements--the USAF with modified OA-10A Thunderbolt IIs, and the Marines with two-seat all-weather F/A-18Ds.

OV-10s were also a mild export success, going to seven other countries, mainly in the COIN role. Most have since been retired in favor of newer designs, though the Philippines still has a large and active OV-10 force. The type enjoyed a brief renaissance in 2015 when two former Marine OV-10Ds were taken up by the USAF for use against ISIS forces in Iraq, to see if the design was still viable. Though the OV-10s performed well, the USAF is not likely to put it back into production. 360 were built, and at least 25 are on display in museums aside from the aircraft that are still operational.

Aside from the Philippine Air Force, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CalFire) uses a fleet of about 20 former USAF OV-10As and former USMC OV-10Ds. These are used to scout for fires during high fire danger times, lead in waterbombers on attack runs, and coordinate large numbers of waterbombers working a particular fire. In the case of the former Marine OV-10Ds, CalFire uses these aircraft's infrared sensors to pick up "hot spots" that would normally be invisible to visual search. Though the aircraft are aging, CalFire still uses their Broncos in these roles.

Though this model carries the registration N476AW, this is actually inaccurate for a CalFire OV-10D. N476AW was indeed a civilian-operated Bronco, but was operated by the US State Department from Patrick AFB, Florida. N476AW was formerly 155501 of the USMC's VMO-4, and was retired in 1994. The State Department acquired it and several other OV-10Ds for use in spraying cocaine fields in Colombia. Given that the coca farmers and the cartels were opposed to this spraying, State OV-10s were frequently shot at and occasionally shot down--to the point that additional armor was scabbed on the bottom of the Broncos to protect the crew.

N476AW was reported active until 2009, when it was taken off the FAA's registry and marked only as "destroyed." This could mean it was scrapped, or possibly one of the OV-10s that was shot down on a covert mission over Colombia.

Though N476AW/155501 never served with CalFire, this model shows off the bright overall gloss blue used by CalFire's OV-10Ds when they were initially put into service. Today CalFire tends to paint their Broncos in more visible white and red. Dad built this kit for display in the Poletto Collection, but in 2013 I donated it to the Great Falls Model Railroad Club for display on their layout at the Montana State Fairgrounds.

FHE Lesson: "Easter"

"Jesus Christ took upon Himself the weight of our sins and the injustices that are committed in the world to the end that we can be free from the consequences." -Jorge F. Zeballos

Conference Talk:

For more information on this topic read "Attempting the Impossible," by Jorge F. Zeballos, Ensign, Nov 2009, 33-34.

Thought:

Jesus Christ took upon Himself the weight of our sins and the injustices that are committed in the world to the end that we can be free from the consequences.

Song:

"Did Jesus Really Live Again," Children's Songbook, p.64.

Scripture:

Behold, I am Jesus Christ, whom the prophets testified shall come into the world. And behold, I am the light and the life of the world; and I have drunk out of that bitter cup which the Father hath given me, and have glorified the Father in taking upon me the sins of the world, in the which I have suffered the will of the Father in all things from the beginning. (3 Nephi 11:10-14)

Note: The following story and lesson are excerpts from the book The Easter Walk by Deborah Pace Rowley and Dan Burr. You can find the entire story and scripture walk in the book.

Story:

Tyler couldn't wait for his Easter walk with Grandpa. This year would be even better because his little sister, six-year-old Amy, was coming with them for the first time. Tyler knew she wouldn't completely understand each scripture, but she would be excited about the treasure hunt.

Grandpa, Tyler, and Amy walked quietly through the park until Grandpa gave the first scripture clue: "And they clothed him with purple, and platted a crown of thorns, and put it about his head" (Mark 15:17).

Tyler took Amy's hand, and they ran ahead until they found a thorny branch. Amy carried it back to Grandpa.

"Excellent," Grandpa said. "What does this thorny branch remind you of?"

"It reminds me that Jesus knows what it feels like to be hurt and sad," Tyler answered. "When Jesus prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane, he sweat drops of blood because of our sins. One of the apostles betrayed him, and the soldiers whipped and mocked him. Then they forced a crown of thorns onto his head."

Grandpa reached out for Tyler's hand and squeezed it tight. For the next clue, Grandpa explained that a friend of Jesus "wrapped him in the linen, and laid him in a sepulchre which was hewn out of a rock, and rolled a stone unto the door of the sepulchre" (Mark 15:46).

Amy found a pretty rock that had sparkly crystals in it and handed it to Grandpa. "Good choice," said Grandpa.

"Tyler, can you tell us the meaning of this stone?"

"A stone was rolled in front of Jesus' tomb, and guards were put in front of it," Tyler answered. "But on the third day an angel came from heaven and rolled the stone away. When Jesus' disciples went to the garden, they saw that the stone had been moved and the tomb was empty."

Grandpa waited until they were almost back home before he gave the last clue. This scripture was Tyler's favorite. "And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. He is not here: for he is risen, as he said" (Matthew 28:5-6).

The children saw many things that were alive. Amy brought Grandpa a ladybug, but Tyler wanted to find something special. He found it in front of their house. Tyler carefully picked a red tulip blossom and sat down beside Grandpa on the porch. Amy picked a red tulip, too. Their mom had planted these tulips, and they came up every spring.

"So," said Grandpa quietly, "tell me why we needed to find something alive."

Tyler loved it when Grandpa asked this question. He always had a warm and good feeling inside when he answered. Grandpa said that feeling was from the Holy Ghost. "We found something alive because Jesus is alive. He was resurrected on the third day."

Tyler put his arm around Amy and gave her a big hug.

Amy leaned up and whispered in Tyler's ear. "I know Jesus is alive, too."

Lesson and Activity:

You can go on your own Easter walk as a family. Walk around your neighborhood or go to a park or wooded area near your home.

If the weather is uncooperative, you can have a treasure hunt inside the house. You may want to carry a sack to hold your treasures. Read the following verses in the Bible and the Book of Mormon and have your children find items suggested by the scriptures. Discuss the significance of each item as you walk or after you arrive home. Bear testimony to your family of the truthfulness of the Atonement and the Resurrection.

Share your feelings about the Savior. As you do this, your children will feel the Spirit, and their testimonies will grow.

TobaccoDays (TD) is committed to showing you; the pipe-maker, the pipe collector, the pipe hobbyist – the pipe world from a different perspective. Every topic covered on TD aims to make you think different. Aims to make you see different. Anything & everything that we can bundle up together and have the final outcome alter an existing attitude on the subject covered, is considered a wonderful day here at TD.

Today I launch a new series which has the aim to highlight the beautiful & varied texture on our beloved pipes. Yes, we hold our pipes, caress them, enjoy them & smoke them day in and day out. Do we ever miss some of the small details though? Can we look at them any deeper? Of course we can.

To assist that process, I went out and hired a professional photographer (high-speed camera, strobe lights, big set-up & all) and took macro pictures of pipes to focus on their surface, their texture. The next phase of the project required me to find a way to express the beauty of the pipe’s surface. Since I lack any skill in the photo shop arena, I went out and hired a professional graphic designer and together we art-directed the project and took it to it’s final stages. The question of – How do we show the beauty of the pipe’s surface & make sure that we ‘really see it’ was the one thing guiding this project. While the pipe’s surrounding’s are definitely photo-shopped, the actual surface of the pipe remains 100% untouched. You are looking at the actual pipe surface of a Dunhill Patent pipe made in 1917, as it looks in reality. This was part of the project’s point. To show the surface, unchanged, in order to highlight it’s ‘interest factor’ that much more.

What I love about this image is that you can see the so-called birth of the sandblasting process. This was right around the time when those pioneers at the Dunhill factory first began to use sandblasting as a technique to apply texture to the briar's surface.

I've committed to several private swaps. These are the blocks available to those people.

There are 4 damsels in windows, one door with a leaving school bus, 3 cat doors (Pinky is already promised) an outhouse (I can make more of these) and 4 cavemen with rolling stones. :) Sounds like a band, doesn't it? lol

If you and I have arranged to do a private swap (you are probably in group 3 this month and I'm not) please put a note or comment on this photo. Thanks! Anybody else that is swapping this month is welcome to FM me with a possible swap deal. :) Close-up photos are in my 'stream.

Leading global companies and foundations committed millions in additional financing for gender equality at the Business and Philanthropy Leaders’ Forum organized by UN Women on 26 September 2016 and held at UN Women headquarters in New York.

Achieving gender equality is fundamental to realizing the transformative promise of the historic 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals. But deep financing gaps for women and girls pose significant barriers to rapid progress.

Commitments at the Forum are aimed at closing these. They back a major global drive, championed by UN Women, to “Step It Up” for gender equality.

UN Women co-hosted the Forum with the Alibaba Group and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Jack Yun Ma, Executive Chair of the Alibaba Group; Melinda Gates, Co-Chair and Trustee of the Gates Foundation; and UN Under-Secretary-General and UN Women Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka opened the event.

52 weeks ago I committed myself spiritually as well as artistcally to photogragh 1 image each week depicting " Be Still And Know I am God". Most weeks were completely unplanned and it was the moment of being "there" that I knew God led me to that scene or that purpose. I chose photography as my outlet because photography slows me down, allowing me to see things I otherwise would have missed. This Psalm...."Be Still..." Allowed me to be in His Presence, to be led and many times a "knowing" that this is what He wanted me to document.

I am filled with awe of this journey, and tonight writing this final entry I feel a sense of sadness as this chapter comes to an end. It has Spiritually opened my heart to learn that we need the quiet, the peace that nature provides. I have been reminded that what is truly most important are our families and the love we share. I met complete strangers at a moment where I discovered kindness that came with no strings attached...at a moment when I needed it most.

As a photographer, I feel I have grown through this journey and feel very blessed that each week I have found or have been led to taking images reflecting "Be Still..."

This final image is the beauty of Fonferek Glen County Park. The fence line was bathed in light while the storm brewed and rolled in. How amazing to see both the light and darkness and the rawness of that moment.... For a final " Be still..."

SUICIDE IN KYBER PASS ROAD.

A MAN SHOOTS HIMSELF.

A man named Joseph Baxter committed suicide yesterday by shooting himself through the head, in Kyber Pass Road. In September last Baxter and his wife and family of three children arrived in Auckland from Brisbane by the steamer Rosamond, on their way to Dunedin, and since that time they have been staying at the residence of Baxter's brother, Mr. James Baxter, who is a warder in Mount Eden Gaol, and whose house adjoins the Queen's Hotel. Yesterday morning, at about a-quarter to six o'clock Mrs. Baxter heard a pistol shot, and immediately afterward a heavy fall, and running to the kitchen, where her husband slept, she found him lying on the floor, bleeding from a wound in his head. There was a revolver, five-chambered, on the floor. Mrs. Baxter alarmed Mr. James Hawkins (licensee of the Queen's Hotel), and Mr. Quinlan (of the Edinburgh Castle Hotel) also attended, and Dr. Girdler was at once summoned. He and Drs. Wine, Roberton, and Lawry were soon at the house, and Baxter, who is a tall man of powerful build, having been lifted on to a couch his injuries were examined. It was seen that the bullet had passed through his head. Entering below the forehead, between the right ear and eye, it had come out at the left side of the head, a little above the left eyebrow, and had destroyed Baxter's sight. The man was conscious, and admitted to Dr. Girdler that he had shot himself, but said he would not tell any man living why he had done it. Chloroform was administered, and every means taken to relieve the pain, but from the first recovery was hopeless. Baxter sank gradually, and died towards evening. Dr. Wine remained with him during the day, until death ensued.

Baxter appeared to be in good spirits on Monday night and yesterday morning at five o'clock, when he aroused his brother, who went out early. None of the family had seen the revolver in the possession of deceased. Deceased and his family lived for many years in Dunedin, where he kept the Pier Hotel, and was well-to-do. He was Master of a Masonic lodge there, and was a life member of Lodge Celtic, No. 477, S.C. Afterwards leaving for Australia, he started in business in Queensland, but he met with reverses there, and this is said to be the cause of his suicide. Baxter had spoken of beginning business again in Dunedin, where he has many friends, and he had proposed to leave for that city this week.

Constable Haslett, who was informed of the occurrence shortly after it was discovered, attended at once at Baxter's house.

A deliberate attempt to commit suicide, which eventuaily had a fatal termination, was made on the 21st October by a man named Joseph Baxter, who was residing in Kyber Pass adjoining the Queen's Hotel. Baxter arrived here with his wife and family about a month ago in the s.s. Rosamond from Brisbane. He has been staying at his brother's house in Kyber Pass prior to returning Dunedin, where he formerly kept the Pier Hotel. He was a native of Ireland, and was at one time a member of the police force in Dunedin, also a warder in the gaol. Afterwards he was proprietor of the Pier Hotel, and kept racing stock, being well liked by all who knew him. Later on Baxter went over to Melbourne, where he started as a contractor. Finding that this did not pay, he removed to Queensland, where he again started an hotel and also acted as a commercial traveller. From Brisbane he came over to Auckland with the intention of again returning to Dunedin.

SUICIDE OF JOSEPH BAXTER.

CORONER INQUEST.

The coroner's inquest on the body of Joseph Baxter, who shot himself on Tuesday morning last, was held at the Queen's Hotel yesterday morning, before Dr. Philson and a jury of six, of whom Mr. David Robertson was chosen foreman.

Jane Baxter, widow of the deceased, deposed that her husband was a commercial traveller, being 45 years of age last birthday. His home was in Dunedin, and he had only been residing temporarily in Auckland for about a month. On Monday evening deceased was in his usual state of health, but for a few days before his death his behaviour seemed peculiar and depressed, owing, as far as witness could ascertain, to loss of money caused by bad speculations. These occurred in Brisbane. He went to bed on Monday night about eleven o'clock, sleeping in the kitchen, while witness slept in an adjoining room. At about a quarter to six on Tuesday morning witness was aroused by the report of a pistol, and on going to the kitchen found deceased lying on the floor. She was not aware that he had a revolver in his possession. She aroused her sister, who was sleeping in the game house, and told her what had happened, and medical assistance was sent for, Dr. Girdler being the first to arrive, and was followed at intervals by three other medical men. Deceased lingered on until twenty minutes to five, when he died. Witness made inquiries of deceased as to the reason for his action, but received no answer. He made his will about two years ago when at Dunedin. He was insured in the Government Insurance Office, and also in another office, which she believed to be the National. She could not account for his suicide on any other grounds than disappointments in business. He was not hard up at the time, and owed no one any money.

The revolver was here produced, four of its chambers being still loaded. It was a bulldog, and apparently quite new.

Dr. Girdler deposed that he saw the deceased about six on Tuesday morning, and found him lying on the floor in a pool of blood. He was quite sensible and asked witness for chloroform to send him to sleep. He was suffering from a revolver wound, the ball having entered midway between the eye and iite ear, coming out at the opposite side. Both eyes were lacerated, and his sight was destroyed. Deceased acknowledged having committed the deed himself, but said no man living should know the reason. He further remarked that his wife was too good for him. Death was caused by the injury received from the wound above described. Deceased expressed no remorse or regret of any kind, and witness was of opinion that his mind was not perfectly sound. There were no signs of liquor upon him. Baxter urged those present to kill him right out, and called them cowards when they refused.

Dr. H. C. Wine deposed that he had known deceased for about three weeks, having attended one of his children for that time. He noticed that deceased was in a desponding state, having lost a great deal of money in Brisbane. Witness corroborated the evidence given by Dr. Girdler, and was of opinion that deceased was temporarily insane at the time.

James Baxter, brother of the deceased, and a warder in Mount Eden Gaol, deposed that his brother was on a visit to him at the time of his death. He, himself, was not in the house when the shot was fired, having gone to attend to his business at five o'clock in the morning. Witness was not aware that deceased was in possession of a revolver. He thought that his intellect was to a certain extent deranged by recent losses, deceased had told him that ho had lost about £2000.

No further evidence was taken, and the jury after some deliberation, came to the following verdict: —"That Joseph Baxter came by his death through temporary insanity, caused by financial difficulties and illness in the family; and the jury strongly condemns the loose manner in which the law allows firearms to be sold."

The Martyrs Monument in the Old Town Cemetery in Stirling.

The three figures represent an angel keeping watch over two young girls, one of whom is reading the Bible to the other. The reader is Margaret Wilson, the listener is her younger sister Agnes. Such is the logic of legend that they are known locally as the ‘Mary Martyrs’.

The two girls belonged to Wigtonshire, the daughters of Gilbert Wilson, a committed Episcopalian. Despite this, the sisters were followers of the Covenanters, an extreme Presbyterian group strongly opposed to the Anglican reforms of Charles II. Margaret and Agnes, aged 18 and 13 respectively, were arrested for their beliefs and along with Margaret McLauchlan, an elderly neighbour, tried for and found guilty of high treason. All three were sentenced to death by drowning. Agnes’s father was able to buy her freedom but despite a temporary reprieve the others were led to a point below high water mark on the treacherous Solway Firth, tied to stakes, and left to drown in the incoming tide. Margaret McLauchlan, by then in her late 60s, had no resistance to the powerful current and soon succumbed to its force. Margaret Wilson was offered her freedom, but refused to relinquish her convictions and died for her faith on May 11th 1685.

The marble group was commissioned from Handyside Ritchie (the sculptor of all the statues in the graveyard and of ‘Wee Wallace’ on the canopy of the Athenaeum in King Street) by William Drummond, a brother of Peter Drummond. It was erected in 1859, without its protective cupola. The cupola was designed by John Rochhead, famous for his design of the National Wallace Monument on Abbey Craig, and it was cast at the Sun Foundry in Glasgow. It was put in place in 1867, necessitating the removal of a symbolic marble lamb, which lay at the girls’ feet. Several other examples of William Drummond’s munificence are to be found in the graveyard, each with its own story. The story behind this one has no connection whatsoever with Stirling, but is an eloquent indicator of Drummond’s obsession with religion.

Matthew and I committed to a "zero waste challenge" this week which meant not buying things that we knew we would throw away and go into landfill. This does not include paper which has gone to recycling or compost. Topleft, clockwise: Beer bottle caps: (homebrew bottles reused), the turkish bread wrapper was reused twice before it hit the bin, and could be reused again by a more dedicated person than me. A pie tin. I admit I forgot when I was in the local bakery. Tin foil is one of the worst offenders in horribly ephemeral use and long term waste of planetary resources. I'm still mentally whipping myself over that one. Cheese wrapper. Cheese is a problem, this Gran Padano wrapper (top right) came from the local food co-op and we've been using the cheese inside for about a month. I suspect this wrapper might break down if I compost it although I haven't taken the trouble to ask. Curry paste tin. Its going to take us a long time before we can make curry paste as good as this one, but it comes in a tin. Vegemite label. The vegemite jar is being reused for visual soil testing. Pasta wrapper. Buying papadelle is pure laziness on our part as we well know how to make our own excellent pasta.

Of the 13 items only one was purchased in the week of the challenge, the pie tin, which weighs 2g. The rest were from grocery items we were part way through using.

Committed to quitting and showing off the goods

Gordon has always been a committed member of the community and schools of Strathmore. Gordon began his teaching career in 1956 and was a teacher or administrator until 1994. Gordon would become a Vice-Principal at Samuel Crowther and then move on to become the Vice-Principal of Strathmore High School from 1986-1992 and finally return to Samuel Crowther Middle School in 1992 as Principal.

Gordon could be found coaching cross country in the fall to track and field in the spring. However, to find Gordon’s true passion and dedication one needed to look no farther than the gymnasium. Gordon loved the extra-curricular events that the school had to offer and his real passion was volleyball. In 1964, the ASAA (Alberta Schools' Athletic Association) hosted the first ever provincial volleyball tournament at the University of Calgary. The driving force behind this event was none other than Mr. Prusky. Gordon’s love of volleyball and his efforts with it were realized in 1968 when his team captured Strathmore High School’s first ever provincial championship.

To be there to start one provincial championship was amazing, but Gordon would be there for a second one as well when Strathmore hosted the first ever high school mixed curling provincial championship. Gordon’s commitment extended even farther as he became a huge advocate for high school rodeo as it began in Strathmore in 1971. Gordon would again be there as the provincial high school rodeo association developed in 1972. He served as secretary-treasurer for high school rodeo from 1972-1983 and has been the high school arena director from the beginning and still is today.

Gordon’s commitment to the organization of high school sports started in 1964 when he was part of the South West Zone executive. Gordon remained on the zone executive from 1964 to 1967. Gordon again served on the zone executive from 1970 to 1982. In addition to Gordon’s involvement at the zone level, he was also very active at the provincial level, acting as the editor/creator of the ASAA yearbook from 1966 to 1975. During this time, Gordon also served on the ASAA executive from 1966 to 1969.

Among Gordon’s many accolades he has been awarded the Kinsman’s Sportsman of the Year and in 1974, Gordon was awarded the Robert H. Routledge Award by the ASAA. This award symbolizes outstanding service to the students of Alberta schools in the promotion and operation of an athletic program and it is the highest award that a coach can receive in the province of Alberta. Comments made about Gordon while receiving this award were “Gordon has given hours of his time to the organization of the zone and he has been a constant supporter of the South Central’s teams and contestants at the majority of provincial competitions. He has continually offered his assistance to adjacent zones that have been privileged to host provincial competitions in badminton, gymnastics, track and field, and volleyball. Gordon’s background has resulted in him being controversial, committed and sometimes impatient at annual meetings. However, those in this association who know him are indebted to him for his adherence to his principles and his heartfelt desire to do his best for the Alberta Schools' Athletic Association.” The Routledge award certainly holds a special place with Gordon as he and Robert (the award’s namesake) had served on the executive committee together during Gordon’s three years with the ASAA.

Gordon’s administrative talents were not limited to the school setting. Gordon would also take these to a number of other areas serving as President of the Wheatland Coaches Association from 1963 to 1993, serving as the lone representative for the South Central Zone and eventually taking a position on that zone’s executive with the ASAA for 10 years; a position which also included yearbook editor for the ASAA. Gordon was also one of the founding members of the Canadian Federation of Provincial Schools Athletic Association in 1967, later to become the Canadian School Sport Federation.

An inquest to inquire into the circumstances surrounding the death of John Henry Shrewsbury who committed suicide on Monday in the Albert Park by taking "Rough on Rats," was held yesterday afternoon before Dr. Philson (Coroner). Sergeant Lyons represented the police. Constable McMahon deposed that he found dec-eased in the Park. He admitted having taken " Rough on Rats." Alexander Christie identified the deceased as John Henry Shrewsbury, a plate glass cutter by trade, but who had for some time past been working in Auckland as a painter. At times he was melancholy, suffering from fits of despondency. Deceased was a married man, and left a wife in Christchurch. Witness had heard him say when in one of his melancholy fits that he "was tired of life, and wished it was ended." Isaac Hill deposed that Shrewsbury suffered from fits of despondency. Witness had heard him say when in these fits that he "wished he was dead." Dr. Pabst stated that when he asked deceased when he had taken the poison, Shrewsbury said at twelve noon, and from the way he spoke witness believed he had taken it intentionally. The post mortem examination revealed signs of arsenical poisoning. The jury returned a verdict to the effect that deceased had "committed suicide while in a state of mental despondency."

Maintenance Order. — A case was brought before the Court by Mr. Strathern, executive officer of the Charitable Aid Board, under the Destitute Persons Act. Ann Gazely was an inmate of the Costley Home, and the present charge was brought against her under the Married Woman's Property Act, 1884. His Worship: That was repealed on the 17th September. I have the new Act before me. Mr. Strathern said he did not know that, but he was directed to proceed. He said after Mrs. Gazeley had been admitted to the Home, the Board discovered that she had money, and they obtained a warrant from this Court, and held the money in trust. Since then the husband also had been admitted to the Home, and Mrs. Gazeley refused to contribute to his maintenance out of her separate estate. Henry N. Garland, secretary and treasurer of the Charitable Aid Board, gave evidence. The amount in the hands of the Board on trust for Mrs. Gazeley was £100 5s 4d. His Worship made an order for payment out of the trust money of 10s a week towards the maintainence of the husband.

Anglican divisions M and N are what is known as ‘Potters Fields’, they were used to bury some of the people whose families were unable to afford funeral costs, were institutionalised or unidentified at the time of burial. These plots were common graves with many having several individuals interred in each. They were narrower and closer together and, because they were not paid for, permanent grave markers were not permitted to be erected.

It is now no longer known where either Anglican Division M or N starts let alone the rows or individual plots which have now been protected by ghost gums, native trees & flax.

On Rescuer's Day, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with the personnel of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, congratulated them on their professional holiday, and awarded state honors.

He emphasized that today is the professional holiday of all those whose job and calling is to save lives.

"Whatever happens, the SES of Ukraine is always there to help, and always promptly. They remain fully committed to their most important mission: saving lives," said the President.

The President inspected samples of automotive and robotic equipment. In particular, Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko and SES Head Andriy Danyk reported on the use of surface drones and robotic systems for mine disposal.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion, Ukrainian rescuers have responded to over 170,000 shelling occasions and extinguished more than 20,000 fires. SES sappers have neutralized over half a million explosive devices.

As a result of Russian aggression, 97 SES personnel have been killed, 395 injured, and 4 are currently held in Russian captivity.

The attendees observed a minute of silence to honor all those Ukraine has lost due to the war.

The President presented the Order of the Golden Star to the family of the fallen Hero of Ukraine, Lieutenant Colonel of the Civil Protection Service Artem Kostyria. The Lieutenant Colonel participated in over 70 operations to mitigate the consequences of Russian attacks. After the liberation of the Kharkiv region, he organized the restoration of nearly 100 damaged fire and rescue units. Thanks to his efforts, over 2,400 people were evacuated. Artem Kostyria was killed on July 13 this year while responding to the aftermath of an enemy missile strike when Russian forces launched a second ballistic missile attack.

The President also awarded SES employees the Orders "For Courage", II and III class, and the Order of Danylo Halytskyi.

Additionally, in Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s presence, the winners of the nationwide "Hero – Rescuer of the Year" campaign were honored. Eight Ukrainians received awards:

Oleh Holubchenko, a maxillofacial surgeon from the Okhmatdyt Children’s Hospital. On July 8 of this year, during a Russian missile strike, he was performing surgery. Medical equipment failed, but he found alternative ways to maintain breathing and carried the child to shelter. Despite his injuries, he assisted rescuers and volunteers in clearing the hospital’s rubble.

Artem Makarov, a cadet at Kharkiv National University of Internal Affairs. In April of this year, he saved an eight-year-old boy whom his own mother tried to drown.

Andriy Bibik, a police officer in the Novopillia community. In one of the villages, he noticed thick smoke near the houses. An outbuilding was on fire, and the flames were spreading toward homes. Andriy rescued a 13-year-old girl, an infant, and two dogs.

Yuliia Oholikhina, a personnel specialist at the SES in the Zaporizhzhia region. While on vacation, she saw a child drowning in a pool. She pulled the girl out of the water and provided first aid.

Andriy Lubenets, a Ukrainian Armed Forces serviceman. Severely wounded in the war, last September, near a pond, he heard a 17-year-old boy’s cry for help. Despite his injured leg, Andriy swam to the boy and pushed him 20 meters to safety with one arm. Patrol police officers helped pull the boy out of the water and resuscitate him.

Ihor Kalashnyk, an electrician at a construction hypermarket. In May of this year, after Russian aerial bombs hit the hypermarket, he fully shut down the power to the building and helped evacuate four visitors from a smoke-filled area. He also removed generator barrels with fuel from the premises to prevent another explosion.

Polina Sholokh, a SES signaller. While at a car wash, she heard a woman screaming. Next to her was a boy with no signs of life, who had been pulled out of a drainage pit. Polina immediately began CPR, and after several minutes, the boy was breathing again.

Oleksandr Zhuk, a physical education teacher. Near a lake, he heard cries for help and saw three girls in the water. One had already lost consciousness and was pulling another down. Oleksandr rescued two of the girls from the water, while the third made it to the shore on her own.
