Namibia: Deputy Prime Minister Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah
"The Beijing Platform for Action remains a powerful guide and source of inspiration to all of us. Since independence, Namibia has paid special attention to women’s empowerment and gender equality…it is an integral part of our Constitution…Significant targets…have been met…. We've increased the number of girls in primary and secondary schools…and the [share] of women in the National Assembly from 24 per cent in 2009 to 46 per cent in 2015…. We still face challenges [that] need to be addressed... Namibia commits herself to women’s empowerment and ensuring that women's rights are protected, and that women have access to services such as education, health and employment, among others. We also commit ourselves to fight gender-based violence…[and] to make sure women as agents of peace play their role both in the community and national level. We will continue to have our women in uniform to serve in UN peacekeeping. We commit ourselves to continue to...fully embrace the critical role women play in society. Finally, gender equality and women’s empowerment [are] prerequisites for sustainable development. Therefore Namibia commits herself to ensure equality between men and women."
World leaders convene at the United Nations on 27 September 2015 for the “Global Leaders’ Meeting on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment: A Commitment to Action” to personally commit to ending discrimination against women by 2030 and announce concrete and measurable actions to kick-start rapid change in their countries.

The Class of 2023 affirmed their commitment to service on August 15, 2021, and took the Oath of Affirmation, binding them to complete their next two years of study and a minimum of five years of active-duty military service thereafter. Astronaut William S. McArthur Jr. ‘73 was the guest speaker for the evening.
Members of the Class of 1973, the 50-year affiliates of the Class of 2023, presented the cadets with commemorative coins to mark the occasion of their affirmed commitment.
"Regardless of your academic focus, you will graduate having majored in leadership. The good news is that you will leave this hallowed institution well-prepared to meet the challenges your careers will place before you. When you graduate, look at your diploma. Understand what it represents. It doesn’t mean that you are ready to conquer the world any more than one from an Ivy League school, an MIT or Ga Tech, a Notre Dame, Michigan, Texas, or Stanford. It means you are ready to learn your profession through hands-on experience. It means you are ready to make your own luck.

YAMANASHI PREFECTURE, Japan – Scores of Soldiers and family members from U.S. Army Japan and I Corps (Forward) joined their Japan Ground Self-Defense (JGSDF) allies in conquering one of the world's most revered mountains.
Peaking at 12,388 feet (3,776 meters) above sea level, Mt. Fuji annually attracts hundreds of thousands of people from all walks of life whose shared adoration for the volcanic marvel comes second only to their aspiration to climb it.
The USARJ/JGSDF ascent to the summit of one of the newest additions to UNESCO's premiere World Heritage List began the morning of Aug. 7, 2015, from the fifth of 10 stations along the Yushida trail. The climbers, whose physical prowess ranged from veteran hikers and Army Rangers to young children and elderly grandparents, snaked their way along dirt trails, stone steps, gravel switchbacks and concrete tunnels.
Nearly two dozen outposts comprising the remaining five stations welcomed their often breathless guests with a free place to rest and, for a fee that climbed steadily with the elevation, hot food, cold drinks and even cans of compressed air. Each station also boasted master craftsmen who adorned the climbers' wooden walking staffs with uniquely engraved stamps that signified their progress along the journey.
Army Command Sgt. Maj. Eric C. Dostie, command sergeant major, USARJ, was the first in the group to set foot on the summit in three hours, 11 minutes. Most of those who reached the top within six hours witnessed a reenlistment ceremony for Army Spc. Angela M. Wilson, an intelligence analyst from the 10th Regional Sustainment Group in Okinawa, who personally requested that her extended commitment to support and defend the Constitution of the United States begin at the peak of Japan's greatest natural treasure.
Although nearly every one who challenged Mt. Fuji returned to their buses with sweat-soaked shirts, dirt covered pants and sun burnt skin, all of them basked in the glory of expanding their vertical boundaries through courage, commitment and camaraderie.

ARC Education Workshop: In March 2012 more than 50 teachers and faith leaders from Christian and Muslim communities across sub-Saharan Africa came together in Nairobi. They were attending a week-long workshop organised by ARC and the Kenyan Organisation for Environmental Education. The aim was to explore how to integrate religious values into education on sustainable development. Among other outcomes, the workshop committed to developing a multi-faith toolkit for use in primary schools. On September 18, 2012, 26 Christian, Muslim and Hindu faith groups in sub-Saharan Africa launched long-term environmental action plans during ARC's 'Many Heavens, One Earth, Our Continent' celebration in Nairobi, Kenya. FORT IRWIN, California -- The New 2016 Weed Army Community Hospital: A Quality of Life Benefit Realized at Fort Irwin.
The Weed Army Community Hospital replacement hospital, scheduled for completion in the fall of 2016 was conceived to improve the medical care provided to Soldiers, military families, and retirees in the Fort Irwin community.
No less important, the hospital will also support brigade-size units that rotate in and out regularly for training at the National Training Center, Fort Irwin’s largest tenant. Since 2001 rotating units have been trained at the NTC for tours to Afghanistan and Iraq and are today being prepared for deployments to potential international trouble spots, peace-keeping missions and in support of allies around the globe. The installation conducts about 10 training rotations per year.
The new facility will effectively be able to accommodate any scenario – emergency or otherwise – in support of the NTCs approximately 10 training rotations per year (more than 50,000 visiting service members) as well as maintaining its commitments to the Fort Irwin Garrison population.
This mission-critical project includes the design of a 21,600 square foot replacement hospital, clinic alterations, utility plant building, ambulance shelter, and helipad. Combining state-of-the-art facility design with innovative energy conservation and generation, the e facility will be the nation’s first carbon-neutral hospital, and it sets a precedent for future military medical facilities.

Nurtured under the able guidance of Guru Gangadhar Pradhan, Aruna especially excels in the abhinaya aspect of Odissi. She has been a student and Secretary of Orissa Dance Academy. Her unique skill and versatility make her the recipient of many awards and accolades, including the Mahari Award 1997, Sanjukta Panigrahi Memorial National Award 2001, Fellowship by Ministry of HRD, Govt. of India, and an award for her contribution to the field of Odissi Dance, from the Utkal University, orissa. Apart from dance, Aruna has also established herself as an excellent choreographer. Some of the items in her repertoire include the dance ballet “Shrusti O Pralay”, “Varsha Abhisara”, “Shravan Kumar”, “Samrat Kharavela” , “Kanchi Abhijan”, “Krupanidhana” & “Krushna Saranam”, etc. Widely traveled to countries like Canada, USA, South America and some of the European countries, she is the advisor-member of Central Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi. Currently she is conferred for the Central Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for the year -2010 by the Govt. of India. And Govt. of Orissa has appointed her to be the Vice-President of State Sangeet Natak Akademi.

History is not scripted; it gets created over the ages. It transforms itself according to the tides of life and times. Therefore, from the point of view of the present, how does one view the entire panorama of Odissi Dance, which has traveled through an arduous journey of nearly two thousand years?
After the sunrise, comes the dark hour of the sunset. But the rhythmic foot falls of Odissi dance, however, continue to reverberate from within the dark corridors of history.
Around the middle of Ninteenth century a new resolve paves the way for the resurrection of the flagging traditions of Odissi Dance. The danseuse damsels break out of their stony incarnation from temple-walls and metamorphose into life. In this hour of revival, the great Gurus of our times create a whole new grammar of Odissi. The genesis of Mangalacharan, Pallavi, Sthayi, Abhinaya and Moksha, which form the superstructures of Odissi, spring up from the sub-structures of the allied art forms and folk forms of Odisha such as Mahari, Gotipua, Sakhi Nata, Raasa and Leela.
Through brief narrations and symbolic images Odisha Dance Academy spins the story of transformation and resurgence of Odissi Dance spanning from the Jagannath Temple of Puri right up to the contemporary stage.

I am terrible at committing myself to keep in communication with friends - I am so used to moving on and losing touch, since I am very independent. And my best friend lives in Europe, which makes it harder. Keeping in regular communication with those I care about is a huge commitment for me, but a necessary part of not losing connection with people in general. I am reminded of this every morning that I am woken up early by our old Russian neighbor who tries to keep in contact with us - he is much better at picking up that phone and dialing than I am......

A nice idea, but...
Elmwoodstock - in the grounds of Elmwood College in Cupar, Fife had all the ingredients. Facilities, known bands but um... they played to around 250 people. The atmosphere was less exciting than Craggy Island Fair and where this was taken from, it wasn't exactly loud.
Bands included The Hazey Janes, The Commitments, Wolfstone, Sergeant, Idlewild.

On Friday 5 June, we lit up our Force Headquarters building purple in solidarity with George Floyd’s loved ones and those who are rightly appalled by the way he lost his life.
We support all those across the world who are affected by this tragedy and our hearts also go out to those who have been affected by the terrible violence and damage across many US cities. Hopefully, peace will soon follow.

Eight men commence ministry for the Church

A baptism at St. Gabriel the Archangel Parish in Cave Creek last week marked a double cause for celebration for one man in particular.
The waters of baptism signaled the first step of a lifelong journey in faith for the 2-month-old boy and the first time the celebrant — the infant’s grandfather — administered the sacrament as a permanent deacon for the Church.
One day prior, Deacon Robert Torigian was among eight men, all married with children, whom Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted ordained to the diaconate Nov. 6 at Ss. Simon and Jude Cathedral. They join 239 permanent deacons serving the Phoenix Diocese from the altar, within parish ministries and in the greater community.
“I know that each of them has what it takes to be an effective, caring deacon and a powerful witness of Jesus, the Servant of all,” said Deacon Doug Bogart, associate director of education and formation for the diaconate.
He described them as smart and creative. The new deacons, ages 42-60, have a strong commitment to service, particularly to the bishop, their parishes and to the poor, Deacon Bogart added.
Bishop Olmsted told a crowded cathedral filled with extended family, friends, priests and fellow deacons that deacons represent the charity of the Church. Therefore, he said, they will see the new deacons as disciples seeking “not to be served, but to serve.”
Then he spoke directly to his eight newest “sons.”
“You receive sacred authority to teach in the name of the Church. Such teachings are badly needed,” the bishop said. He cautioned them to resist the temptation to omit any teaching that may not be popular.
“Hand it on faithfully in its organic wholeness,” the bishop said.
One by one all eight deacon candidates knelt in front of the bishop, placed their hands in his and promised their fidelity.
Then the entire church offered a litany of supplication while the candidates fully prostrated themselves down the cathedral’s center aisle. It marked their act of submission.
When they got up, the new deacons spread themselves along the foot of the altar where priests vested them for the first time. Jesuit Father Dave Klein vested his brother Deacon Tom Klein, who will be the only deacon serving St. Francis Xavier Parish.
Deacon Klein also cited his other brother, a St. Thomas the Apostle parishioner and longtime Vincentian, as influential in his discernment.
“It’s been a lifetime evolution for me. There was no lightning bolt moment,” Deacon Klein said in his final hour before ordination.
Deacon Klein, who also works as a trial lawyer, will head the parish’s busy marriage preparation program. He hopes to encourage parishioners of all ages to become more active in the Church.
Once vested, the deacons knelt a final time in front of Bishop Olmsted as he symbolically handed each of them the Book of the Gospels.
“Now you are not only hearers of the Gospels, but also its ministers,” the bishop said.
The deacons finished their ordination Mass from the altar and helped distribute the Eucharist.
Hope for the future
“We, today, witnessed the living faith being handed on from generation to generation so that the Church of Christ will never be without the sacraments of the three holy orders of the Church,” Bishop Eduardo A. Nevares said during a brief program at a post-ordination reception.
Providing for the future of the Church, especially by administering the sacrament of baptism, is what several new deacons looked forward to in their first weeks of ordained ministry. One had eight baptisms lined up during his first week.
“That is the joy and source of hope,” said Deacon David Runyan, a retired meteorologist who will serve St. Andrew the Apostle Parish in Chandler and El Cristo Rey Parish at the Grand Canyon in the summertime.
Deacon Torigian, who baptized his grandson, plans to remind older Catholics of their baptismal obligation to come to know and serve the Lord, he said.
The new deacon and longtime physician assistant should know a thing or two about service. He devoted so much time to pastoral ministry in his native Detroit that several deacons invited him to consider joining the diaconate. He finished formation in Phoenix.
Outside of parish work at St. Gabriel, Deacon Torigian will also help the diocesan Office of Natural Family Planning develop curriculum for Catholic high school students.
Deacon Jim Gall, who for a while didn’t know what a deacon was but always liked to serve others, also looks forward to living the deacon motto of servant leadership.
He gained a deeper prayer life during the formation process. It’s helped him see things with spiritual eyes instead of reacting based on temperament, he said.
“I could never go back to the way I was,” Deacon Gall said.
Most new deacons said they gained a deeper spirituality and strengthened their marriage and family relationships during formation.
“I just thank God that I finally said yes,” said Deacon Al Homiski, a parish administrator at St. Bernadette in Scottsdale. He admitted putting off repeated invitations to join the diaconate for years.
The five-year formation process in Phoenix involves two years of weekly Kino classes, monthly diaconate meetings with candidates and their wives, practicums including at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, and twice daily prayer. The experience is enough to impact the entire family.
Deacon Ron Johnson saw a noticeable change in the spiritual lives of his three children as well during formation. The psychologist first felt called to the diaconate during a Cursillo weekend seven years ago and is looking forward to being the first Spanish-speaking deacon in the Flagstaff area.
He’ll also travel with Fr. Pat Mowrer throughout the north deanery supporting other parishes and missions.
Deacon Jason Robinson said he was always attracted to serving the Church. He applied to the priesthood after high school and entered further discernment.
He soon met his wife through a singles ministry and continued to search for his niche in the Church.
“I had this passion for the Church kind of from the inside, yet I was a working man,” the software developer said, “so I was always a bridge.”
He thought about entering the diaconate later in life. A personal invitation to the diaconate expedited his formation and ordination.
His ministry will include prison and Native American outreach plus parish work.
“Thank you for responding to God,” Deacon Jim Trant, director of the diaconate told the diocese’s newest deacons, “for doing and acting upon His will.”

The Avison Ensemble is delighted to have welcomed Benjamin Zander to present a series of music workshops in Newcastle for musicians and listeners as part of our ongoing commitment to music learning in the North East. These workshops were held from 13th to 16th August 2012 in Newcastle University’s King’s Hall; they were open to amateur and professional musicians of all ages and to listeners, including those with no previous experience of classical music.
These workshops were transformative and inspirational for the musicians participating as they discovered new possibilities in interpretation, expression and performance. Ben explored the ‘hidden language’ of music and the impact of its use on both performers and listeners. However, these were not technical master classes – they were full of surprises and often emotional experiences which transformed the audience and players’ outlook on the relationship of music to life.
The Avison Ensemble is the outstanding period instrument orchestra based in Newcastle upon Tyne, which plays and popularises the music of Charles Avison (1709-1770) and other English classical composers of the Baroque period, such as Garth, Arne and Herschel. The Ensemble also performs Purcell, Handel, Vivaldi, Corelli, Geminiani, Pergolesi, Teleman, Rameau, Bach, Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven. The Ensemble is strongly committed to music learning in North East England and has an active education programme and its own annual Young Musicians’ Awards competition.
Ben Zander is the acclaimed conductor of the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra and a passionate musician and speaker of world renown. He has collaborated in performances with many of the world’s greatest musicians, amongst whom have been Rostropovich, Oscar Shumsky, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Martha Argerich, Yo-Yo Ma, and Jaqueline Du Pré.
Ben’s work with young people and youth orchestras is world renowned and he has recently been awarded the Youth Orchestra of the Americas 10th anniversary award for his invaluable contribution to the youth symphony movement across the Americas. Nurtured under the able guidance of Guru Gangadhar Pradhan, Aruna especially excels in the abhinaya aspect of Odissi. She has been a student and Secretary of Orissa Dance Academy. Her unique skill and versatility make her the recipient of many awards and accolades, including the Mahari Award 1997, Sanjukta Panigrahi Memorial National Award 2001, Fellowship by Ministry of HRD, Govt. of India, and an award for her contribution to the field of Odissi Dance, from the Utkal University, orissa. Apart from dance, Aruna has also established herself as an excellent choreographer. Some of the items in her repertoire include the dance ballet “Shrusti O Pralay”, “Varsha Abhisara”, “Shravan Kumar”, “Samrat Kharavela” , “Kanchi Abhijan”, “Krupanidhana” & “Krushna Saranam”, etc. Widely traveled to countries like Canada, USA, South America and some of the European countries, she is the advisor-member of Central Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi. Currently she is conferred for the Central Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for the year -2010 by the Govt. of India. And Govt. of Orissa has appointed her to be the Vice-President of State Sangeet Natak Akademi.

Gatha Odissi - from the temple to the stage
History is not scripted; it gets created over the ages. It transforms itself according to the tides of life and times. Therefore, from the point of view of the present, how does one view the entire panorama of Odissi Dance, which has traveled through an arduous journey of nearly two thousand years?
After the sunrise, comes the dark hour of the sunset. But the rhythmic foot falls of Odissi dance, however, continue to reverberate from within the dark corridors of history.
Around the middle of Ninteenth century a new resolve paves the way for the resurrection of the flagging traditions of Odissi Dance. The danseuse damsels break out of their stony incarnation from temple-walls and metamorphose into life. In this hour of revival, the great Gurus of our times create a whole new grammar of Odissi. The genesis of Mangalacharan, Pallavi, Sthayi, Abhinaya and Moksha, which form the superstructures of Odissi, spring up from the sub-structures of the allied art forms and folk forms of Odisha such as Mahari, Gotipua, Sakhi Nata, Raasa and Leela.
Through brief narrations and symbolic images Odisha Dance Academy spins the story of transformation and resurgence of Odissi Dance spanning from the Jagannath Temple of Puri right up to the contemporary stage.

Some of the cultural specialties that I learned in Kenya is that you show respect to a mother by referring to her parental role and the name of her first born. This is Alan. He is a beautiful child of 7 or 8 who we learned this day has special needs as a result of the effects of malaria when he was much younger. This is Mama Alan, whom I have great respect for and admiration in her commitment to provide for her child no matter what.
I met people in this part of the world that struggle every day with not only malaria, but also polio and other challenges mostly foreign to the western world. I gained a great respect for the heart of some people I can now call friends.

VALOR
This year the Medal of Valor and Award of Merit honorees include seven members who distinguished themselves while off duty in Las Vegas, during the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival and a member who saved the lives of three young children at a structure fire in Wilmington.
Medal of Valor: A member is entitled to consideration for this award by performing an act of conspicuous heroism and/or bravery under extreme personal risk above and beyond the calculated personal risk demands of the fire service. Seven members earned this prestigious award this year, they are:

Grady Salutes: A Celebration of Achievement, Commitment and Leadership, took place April 27, 2018, at the University of Georgia Center for Continuing Education and Hotel.
Brooke Anderson (ABJ '00) and Dean Charles Davis hosted the ceremony.
The Alumni Awards for 2018 were presented by Dana Todd (ABJ 91) and were given to Sally Yates (ABJ’ 82) in absentia, Ashley Huston (ABJ '96), Polina Marinova (ABJ ’11) and Jisu Huh (MA '00, PhD '03).
Jennifer Sloan (ABJ '86) assisted Dean Charles Davis (MA '92) with the induction the new Grady Fellows. They are: Cully Clark, Melita Easters (ABJ '76), David Hazinski, Lisa Ryan Howard (ABJ ’92), Lee Thomas (ABJ ’87) and Sally Yates (ABJ '82).
