Commemorating the 100th anniversary of the birthday of George Eastman , the founder of the 'Eastman Kodak Company' . Issued July 12, 1954 .

(for Macro Mondays - theme : Speckled)

To commemorate the 69th anniversary of the battle, I built this MOC. It's dedicated to the men who fought and died on Iwo Jima.

Overall I like it, but black is such a hard color to photograph. Plus, the island itself was pretty plain, so keeping it from looking like a black baseplate was a little tough. At least its not another Peleliu MOC though :-P Make sure to check out the other pictures of it as well.

To commemorate the 109th anniversary of Titanic's maiden voyage, A Night to Remember returns to The Vordun as a permanent exhibit.

Opening Reception

Saturday, April 10 @ 12PM SLT

A Night to Remember

Travel back in time and experience the wonder and tragedy of the world's most famous ocean liner, Titanic. This immersive exhibit tells the dramatic and poignant story of the ship, crew, and passengers who embarked on the voyage of a lifetime, only to be part of one of the greatest disasters in history.

A Titanic Experience Like Never Before in Second Life

Upon entrance, visitors will receive a card with the name, age and class of an actual Titanic passenger. They'll then begin their chronological journey through six galleries, moving from the ship's constructions, to life on board, to its ill-fated strike of an iceberg. In the final gallery, guests can take their passenger card to the memorial wall and discover their actual fate.

Exhibit Highlights

• Replicas of artifacts recovered from the wreck site of Titanic

• Recreations of some of the most famous rooms from the ship

• Interactive storytellers in period costume

Commemorating the passing of Queen Elizabeth II

Commemorating the 15th anniversary of the death of "The Queen of Salsa" Celia Cruz there was an exhibit and concert at Woodlawn Cemetery. On display were many of her costumes, wigs, shoes, hats and some of her personal photographs. Her mausoleum was open for visitors to pay their respects. The event was organized by Omer Pardillo Cid, President of the Celia Cruz Foundation, her longtime manager and estate trustee and the Woodlawn Conservancy.

I happened to see this event attendee who captured the style of Celia beautifully and was gracious enough to pose for a few photos.

Christmas is an annual festival commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ, observed primarily on December 25 as a religious and cultural celebration among billions of people around the world. A feast central to the Christian liturgical year, it is preceded by the season of Advent or the Nativity Fast and initiates the season of Christmastide, which historically in the West lasts twelve days and culminates on Twelfth Night. Christmas Day is a public holiday in many countries, is celebrated religiously by a majority of Christians, as well as culturally by many non-Christians, and forms an integral part of the holiday season organized around it.

The traditional Christmas narrative recounted in the New Testament, known as the Nativity of Jesus, says that Jesus was born in Bethlehem, in accordance with messianic prophecies. When Joseph and Mary arrived in the city, the inn had no room and so they were offered a stable where the Christ Child was soon born, with angels proclaiming this news to shepherds who then spread the word.

There are different hypotheses regarding the date of Jesus' birth and in the early fourth century, the church fixed the date as December 25. This corresponds to the traditional date of the winter solstice on the Roman calendar. It is exactly nine months after Annunciation on March 25, also the date of the spring equinox. Most Christians celebrate on December 25 in the Gregorian calendar, which has been adopted almost universally in the civil calendars used in countries throughout the world. However, part of the Eastern Christian Churches celebrate Christmas on December 25 of the older Julian calendar, which currently corresponds to January 7 in the Gregorian calendar. For Christians, believing that God came into the world in the form of man to atone for the sins of humanity, rather than knowing Jesus' exact birth date, is considered to be the primary purpose in celebrating Christmas.

The celebratory customs associated in various countries with Christmas have a mix of pre-Christian, Christian, and secular themes and origins. Popular modern customs of the holiday include gift giving; completing an Advent calendar or Advent wreath; Christmas music and caroling; viewing a Nativity play; an exchange of Christmas cards; church services; a special meal; and the display of various Christmas decorations, including Christmas trees, Christmas lights, nativity scenes, garlands, wreaths, mistletoe, and holly. In addition, several closely related and often interchangeable figures, known as Santa Claus, Father Christmas, Saint Nicholas, and Christkind, are associated with bringing gifts to children during the Christmas season and have their own body of traditions and lore.Because gift-giving and many other aspects of the Christmas festival involve heightened economic activity, the holiday has become a significant event and a key sales period for retailers and businesses. Over the past few centuries, Christmas has had a steadily growing economic effect in many regions of the world.

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the introduction of route 500(and with it, the entire Red Arrow network of routes), MEC50 has been repainted into a special livery based on the livery worn by MBA-class AEC-MCW Merlins for the Red Arrow routes. It's even been "renumbered" to MBA50!

That fleetnumber wasn't worn by the Red Arrow MBAs, which were allocated MBA16-31(low driving position) and MBA166-193(high driving position) but I still find it really nice and somewhat nostalgic to find the MBA fleetcode imprinted on the side of MEC50.

Today, however, only 2 such routes remain; the all-week 507(Waterloo - Victoria) and the Monday-Friday 521(Waterloo - London Bridge). These are both allocated MEC-class Citaro facelifts as well as 4 demonstrator electric vehicles; 2 BYD K-9s numbered EB1 and EB2 and 2 Irizar i2es numbered EI1 and EI2. Soon, these will be replaced by 51 Enviro 200MMC-bodied BYD eBuses numbered SEe1-51.

Seen at Waterloo Station(Upper Taxi Road) is Go-Ahead London General MEC50/BT09GPJ, a Mercedes-Benz O530 Citaro Facelift based at Waterloo(RA), working route 507(Waterloo - Victoria).

To commemorate the 105th anniversary of Titanic's sinking, an assortment of Titanic-themed merchandise has returned to The Vordun's gift shop. These products were first seen in 2016, alongside A Night to Remember and were only available during the exhibit's 3-month engagement at The Vordun. A shelf-sized model of the ship and replicas of White Star Line's china are just a few of the items that have returned to The Vordun. If you missed A Night to Remember or didn't make it to the gift shop after your visit, here's your chance to grab these collectibles! But hurry, as they're set to sail away soon.

Commemorating the Coronation of King Charles III at Covent Garden station

To commemorate the announcement of my new coin design via the Royal Canadian Mint (available for pre-order here: www.mint.ca/en/shop/coins/2023/dollar20-pure-silver-hexag... ) I am putting together a mini snowflake series in September. This giant gem is something special.

It starts out as a “capped column” type of crystal, which is a column that grows plates out of both hexagonal end facets. The original column was very small and barely recognizable except for a few pixels at the very center of the central hexagonal plate. This is what gave birth to that central hexagon! If one of the two plates grows faster than the other and obtains a larger footprint (often caused by one side of the crystal facing the prevailing wind even for a second or two), the larger plate will forever grow faster – exponentially so. Since the outer edge will have access to more building blocks (water vapour), whatever sticks out the farthest will grow the fastest.

Stellar Dendrites such as this are almost the largest type of snowflakes, as a single crystal can reach beyond 1cm in diameter. This one is a bit smaller, measuring roughly 6mm across. “Fern-like” Stellar Dendrites usually fill in the larger size, distinguished by pointed non-faceted tips caused by extremely rapid growth. See the strong faceting on the tips of each branch with clear 60-degree angles? Slower growth created stronger facets here.

The size of this crystal also shows you the scale of other snowflakes – just look at the upper right. Formed at the same time and falling with the larger specimen, this tiny sectored plate crystal came along for the ride. This is quite common, and often other snowflakes affect the growth of each-other – we have evidence of that too! See how densely-packed the left side of the snowflake is, while there appear to be many gaps in the crystal formations on the right side? This is evidence that another snowflake was attached here while the crystal was growing.

Many snowflakes stick together in clusters, causing asymmetric growth on the individual flakes in the cluster; pure symmetry in snowflakes is quite rare. While all of the branches here are roughly the same length, look closely. You’ll see that they are all vastly different in their structure and how they interact with neighbouring branches. Sometimes you’ll spot branches that fuse together because there is nowhere else to grow and they are growing on identical planes. There are exceptions to this, as snowflakes are more three-dimensional than we initially see.

Notice one large side-branch in the middle-left? It’s actually growing over top of other branches, because it formed on a higher plane than the others. This can occur when a branch starts due to nucleation caused by the impact with a super-cooled droplet of water, but in this case, it grew from the edge of a plateaued main branch ridge. Main branches often have a “spine” of sorts, growing thicker than the rest of the crystal. If it rises high enough, it can collect water vapour on the top, becoming an anvil-like shape. This introduces another plate-like structure on a higher plane. Branches can form off of these new plates if they develop early enough in the outward growth of the crystal.

They are complex little physics puzzles, these snowflakes. I have no formal training in science, but simple observations and a few basic rules (whatever sticks out the farthest grows the fastest) can help define much of what we see here.

And, all of this beauty can be yours in pure silver form (though not the same snowflake as this). The Royal Canadian Mint $20 Pure Silver Hexagonal Snowflake Coin, designed by yours truly, is available for pre-order now: www.mint.ca/en/shop/coins/2023/dollar20-pure-silver-hexag...

A superb mural commemorating the late Richard Beckinsale (1947-1979), can be seen in Station Road, Beeston, Nottingham. It is one of three portraits painted onto the sides of buildings in Station Road by street artist 'Zabou'. The art works were created with the blessing of the local council in 2018.

Nottingham born actor Richard Beckinsale was a well-known and much loved TV favourite, who's sudden and unexpected death at the age of 31-years shocked the nation. For those who don't remember Beckinsale, his most famous roles were as Lennie Godber in the prison sitcom Porridge (1974 to 1977). And as the naive medical student Alan Moore in the ITV sitcom Rising Damp (also 1974 to 1977).

Beckinsale also starred in the TV sitcom - 'The Lovers' (1970–1971), with actress Paul Wilcox. The 1973 film version of this series sticks in my mind, with much of the on-street filming done in Manchester during the SELNEC era.

The other two characters who feature in the mural are: -

Beeston born Sir Paul Brierley Smith. CH CBE RDI (Born 1946), a renown fashion designer, and is still very much with us.

The third portrait is of the late singer - songwriter Edwin Starr (1942 - 2003). I find Edwin Starr's inclusion a little odd as he was an American born singer - songwriter, who's connection with Nottingham was that he lived in Bramcote in his final years before he died in 2003 aged 61. There are so many famous people who came from the City and its surrounds, and who to my mind would have been a more relative to this mural than Starr.

“Unconditional Surrender,” a 25-foot, 6,000 pound statue by world-renowned artist J.Seward Johnson commemorating a famous World War II photo was unveiled Feb. 10 at Mole Park in San Diego. Unconditional Surrender is a three-dimensional interpretation of a photo taken by Alfred Eisenstaedt of a Sailor kissing a nurse in Times Square, New York City on Aug. 14, 1945, following the announcement of V-J Day, world war II.

The speech of Alfred Eisenstaedt, Father of Photojournalism is the following:

"In Times Square on V.J. Day, I saw a sailor running along the street grabbing every girl in sight. I was running ahead of him with my Leica looking back over my shoulder. Then suddenly, in a flash, I saw something white being grabbed. I turned around and clicked the moment the sailor kissed the nurse...I took exactly four pictures. It was done within a few seconds."

Victory Day is a holiday that commemorates the victory of the Soviet Union over Nazi Germany in 1945. It was first inaugurated in the 15 republics of the Soviet Union following the signing of the German Instrument of Surrender late in the evening on 8 May 1945 (9 May Moscow Time). The Soviet government announced the victory early on 9 May after the signing ceremony in Berlin. Although the official inauguration occurred in 1945, the holiday became a non-labor day only in 1965.

In East Germany, 8 May was observed as Liberation Day from 1950 to 1966, and was celebrated again on the 40th anniversary in 1985. In 1967, a Soviet-style "Victory Day" was celebrated on 8 May. Since 2002, the German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has observed a commemoration day known as the Day of Liberation from National Socialism, and the End of the Second World War.

The Russian Federation has officially recognized 9 May since its formation in 1991 and considers it a non-working holiday even if it falls on a weekend (in which case any following Monday will be a non-working holiday). The holiday was similarly celebrated while the country was part of the Soviet Union. Most other countries in Europe observe Victory in Europe Day (often abbreviated to VE Day, or V-E Day) on 8 May, and Europe Day on 9 May as national remembrance or victory days.

To commemorate the premier of Mobile Suit Gundam Iron-Blooded Orphans Season 2, I've upgraded my old Barbatos model to the new and improved Barbatos Lupus! Pretty much all the armor is completely new (except on the upper arms), and I've reworked a few areas of the frame, namely the knee joints which I've replaced with a much sturdier ball-and-socket joint. It's definitly not a perfect representation, and I plan on tweaking it quite a bit in the future, but for now I'm satisfied. I think I managed to capture the much more abstract, angular look pretty well. The only part I really don't like right now are the hip binders, which are a bit too plain. They'll definitely get a revamp soon.

Anyway, what are you doing here, go check out episode 1 of IBO season 2! See you when I build the inevitable next upgrade of the Barbatos!

inaugurate verb: to put something into use

Turn up on election day in Australia and I'll bet London to a brick on you'll be offered a democracy sausage. There'll be equal odds that it will be cooked on a flat barbecue plate by someone from a local service club or school auxiliary, slapped diagonally on a piece of square, fluffy, characterless, sliced white bread, buried beneath undercooked onions if you're there early, or cremated ones if you're there late, and garnished with dead horse.

celebrate verb: to honour or praise

The sausage is a wondrous thing; a mystery bag of bits and pieces — whether it's upper class or as down-to-earth as a Scottish haggis. It is never celebrated more democratically than when it's laid down in the embrace of a bun, dressed here in a simplified form that you might encounter in København; a world away from the queue to vote.

This wiener is a pale simulacrum of the frankfurter it could be. Stuffed with ground bits rejected then selected for their inferiority, and wrapped in a dyed orange/brown skin, it'll have to do for this inauguration. Dressing this dog is the first, the inaugural task of a new batch of red kraut — fermented in the Danish-style with fennel seeds. The mustard is sweet, in the Swedish-style, and the onions are just a few metres from where they grew in this green land.

commemorate verb: to mark or celebrate

Here's to the not so humble hotdog! It commemorates its disparate parts, its humble origins in Germany, its adoption and adaptation around the World, symbol of getting together, getting along and the whole made better than the sum of its parts.

زن، زندگی، آزادی - بزرگداشت قتل مهسا امینی

A coloured pavement chalk drawing in London's Trafalgar Square commemorating one year since the death of 22 year old Mahsa Amini, just three days after her arrest by Iranian police for wearing her hijab 'improperly.' The evidence suggests that she was beaten into a coma following a skull fracture to her head, although the Iranian government insists she died from a heart attack.

Iranian women reacted by burning their hijabs, tens of thousands of protesters took to the streets while workers staged sit-in strikes and many shops closed down. The Iranian government responded with arrests, executions and by restricting internet access and shutting down some social media platforms.

Later this week, I hope to post more photos from the commemorative protest held on Sunday 16 September 2023 in London's Trafalgar Square in solidarity with Iranian women and workers struggling against an authoritarian theocracy, and also hopefully some additional commentary.

Commemorating 30 years since steam finished on Iron Ore workings BR Standard Class 9F paid a short visit to the BSC Shotton Steel works in Flintshire for a private photographic charter organised by Freight Train Productions, the then owner David Shepherd can be just seen in the cab window.

Unfortunately the day did not go quite to plan as the engine spent more time off the track than on it. A hurried plan was put into action and a number of jacks arrived with kind permission from the Llangollen railway with a few members from the loco department. This took quite a while to complete and shortened the photographic opportunities quite considerably.

Before the unfortunate incident the engine, complete with 8H shed code, did manage a few runs with steel coils in tow, just out of sight at the back was one of the on site diesel engines to provide braking, despite all of this it was good to see such an impressive sight of a 9F on a very heavy train.

The memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum commemorates the service and sacrifice of the officers and soldiers of the Royal Army Veterinary Corp and its historical predecessors.

The National Memorial Arboretum is a national site of remembrance at Alrewas, near Lichfield, Staffordshire, United Kingdom. It gives its purpose as:

The National Memorial Arboretum honours the fallen, recognises service and sacrifice and fosters pride in our country. It is a spiritually uplifting place and is emerging as a world-renowned centre for remembrance.

Commemorating IWD - Poster for 'Brazen Hussies': a film about "The women who started a feminist revolution in Australia".

I wish there was something to celebrate about the day but when your federal parliament is rife with rape and rapist allegations and women mouthing "rule of law rule of law rule of law", it doesn't feel celebratory.

Christmas is an annual festival commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ, observed primarily on December 25 as a religious and cultural celebration among billions of people around the world. A liturgical feast central to Christianity, preparation for Christmas begins on the First Sunday of Advent and it is followed by Christmastide, which historically in the West lasts twelve days and culminates on Twelfth Night. Christmas Day is a public holiday in many countries, is celebrated religiously by a majority of Christians, as well as culturally by many non-Christians, and forms an integral part of the holiday season surrounding it.

There are different hypotheses regarding the date of Jesus's birth. In the early fourth century, the church fixed the date as December 25, the date of the winter solstice in the Roman calendar. It is nine months after Annunciation on March 25, also the Roman date of the spring equinox. For Christians, believing that God came into the world in the form of man to atone for the sins of humanity rather than knowing Jesus's exact birth date is considered to be the primary purpose of celebrating Christmas.

Trajan's Column (Italian: Colonna Traiana, Latin: COLVMNA·TRAIANI) is a Roman triumphal column in Rome, Italy, that commemorates Roman emperor Trajan's victory in the Dacian Wars. It was probably constructed under the supervision of the architect Apollodorus of Damascus at the order of the Roman Senate. It is located in Trajan's Forum, built near the Quirinal Hill, north of the Roman Forum. Completed in AD 113, the freestanding column is most famous for its spiral bas relief, which artistically describes the epic wars between the Romans and Dacians (101–102 and 105–106). Its design has inspired numerous victory columns, both ancient and modern.

The structure is about 30 metres (98 feet) in height, 35 metres (115 feet) including its large pedestal. The shaft is made from a series of 20 colossal Carrara marble[a] drums, each weighing about 32 tons, with a diameter of 3.7 metres (12.1 feet). The 190-metre (620-foot) frieze winds around the shaft 23 times. Inside the shaft, a spiral staircase of 185 steps provides access to a viewing platform at the top. The capital block of Trajan's Column weighs 53.3 tons, which had to be lifted to a height of c. 34 metres (112 feet).

Ancient coins indicate preliminary plans to top the column with a statue of a bird, probably an eagle, but after construction, a statue of Trajan was put in place; this statue disappeared in the Middle Ages. On December 4, 1587, the top was crowned by Pope Sixtus V with a bronze figure of St. Peter, which remains to this day. Filippo Coarelli, a noted Italian archaeologist, explains that: When it was built, the column stood between two libraries, which perhaps held the soldier-emperor's account of the Roman-Dacian Wars. Working under the supervision of a maestro, Coarelli says, sculptors followed a plan to create a sky-scraping version of Trajan's scroll on 17 drums of the finest Carrara marble.

Avignon is commemorated by the French children's song, "Sur le pont d'Avignon" ("On the bridge of Avignon"), which describes folk dancing. The bridge of the song is the Saint Bénézet bridge, over the Rhône River, of which only four arches (out of the initial 22) remain which start from the Avignon side of the river. In fact people would have danced beneath the bridge (sous le pont) where it crossed an island (Île de Barthelasse) on its way to Villeneuve-lès-Avignon. The bridge was initially built between 1171 and 1185, with an original length of some 900 m (2950 ft), but it suffered frequent collapses during floods and had to be rebuilt several times. Several arches were already missing (and spanned by wooden sections) before the remainder were destroyed in 1660.

To commemorate what would have been the 60th birthday of Diana the Princess of Wales, her sons the Dukes of Cambridge and Sussex, came together to unveil a special memorial statue of their mother in Kensington Palace’s Sunken Garden.

The statue was created by Ian Rank-Broadley, a royal-favourite sculptor known for his work on British coinage and on the Armed Forces Memorial. It shows Diana standing among three children, dressed in a stylish shirt and pencil skirt, accessorised with a wide belt. A statement from Kensington Palace stated that the figure ‘is surrounded by three children who represent the universality and generational impact of The Princess’ work’, while the ‘style of dress was based on the final period of her life as she gained confidence in her role as an ambassador for humanitarian causes and aims to convey her character and compassion.’

The new Princess Diana statue is located inside the Sunken Garden at Kensington Palace. The Sunken Garden was created in 1908 at the instigation of King Edward VII. The king's plans were inspired by Pond Garden at Hampton Court Palace. The palace opted to give the gardens a makeover before the statue became revealed.
