Paleontology has been very significant for consolidating the revolutionary darwinist approach to the study of nature.

This amazing natural accumulation of fossils, mainly ammonites, represents a small patch of sea floor “frozen in time”. These extinct cephalopods have drifted up against pieces of waterlogged driftwood. The aggregate contains four distinct genera of ammonites 200 million years old (Lower Jurassic) [Information from Ulster Museum].

On November 10, we commemorate the death anniversary of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Republic of Turkey. Although Atatürk Remembrance Day is not a public holiday, it is marked throughout the country with a moment of silence.

Mustafa Kemal Atatürk was born in 1881. The surname Atatürk was granted to him in 1934, it means “Father of Turks”. Atatürk was the leader of the Turkish National Movement in the Turkish War of Independence. He established the Republic of Turkey in 1923 and became its first president. Atatürk's extensive reforms helped convert Turkey into a modern and secular nation-state.

Mustafa Kemal Atatürk died at 9:05 on November 10, 1938. Every year, all of Turkey observes a moment of silence on November 10 to honor Atatürk's memory. At 9:05, sirens go off across the country. Everyone stops and keeps silence for a minute, remembering Atatürk and his accomplishments. Many people lay flowers and wreaths at Atatürk's memorials.

On a recent trip to Door County Wisconsin, I stopped by the legendary Anderson Dock.

When I first got there to scope it out, it was raining with a sustained wind of at least 20-30 MPH. Not real good odds of getting a picture. As I waited around for sunset, the rain finally stopped and the sun poked out for just a few minutes to get this shot. I felt fortunate to get something for my trouble.

Per the Door County Pulse website... After Norwegian brothers Aslag and Halvor Anderson recognized the need for a deepwater dock in Ephraim, they constructed one in 1858. Throughout the 1880s, steamers arriving at the dock — most notably from the Goodrich Transportation Company — brought much-needed goods and much-appreciated tourists, and this activity ultimately vitalized Ephraim. Although the dock’s warehouse — the present-day Hardy Gallery — was built to store merchandise, it became a visible reminder of the sailors and ships that had stopped there.

Emily Irwin, outreach director and curator for the Ephraim Historical Foundation, explained that sailors arriving in Ephraim painted the name of their ship and the date on the side of the building as a way to mark their visit.

It’s a bit of a mystery exactly when the graffiti tradition began, but sailors were known to write on the warehouse from around 1910 into the 1950s, perhaps to express their relief and gratitude for a safe passage through the notorious Death’s Door waters, or simply to commemorate their arrival in Ephraim.

In 1949, the Ephraim Historical Foundation purchased the dock and warehouse from the Anderson family, and in 1961, the foundation leased the building to the Hardy Gallery. Through these shifts, however, the graffiti tradition has remained intact, with the public picking up where the sailors left off.

Constructed in 1921 to commemorate the two Battles of the Marne from World War I, the Marne Dormans Memorial is located between Paris and Reims on the D980.

The First Battle of the Marne 1914 was a strategic victory, saving Paris from capture by the Germans, but saw a loss of 250,000 French (a comparable number of Germans) and 12, 733 British.

The Second Battle that the Marne Dormans Memorial commemorates in the summer of 1918 would be the last major German offensive. The French suffered a loss of 95,000 men, Germany 168,000, Britain 13,000 losses and the U.S. 12,000.

Dormans Memorial Chapel

This 171 foot high World War I memorial has three levels. The ossuary level of the memorial holds the bones of approximately 1500 unidentified soldiers.

The Dormans Memorial crypt, which opens onto the main square in front of this Gothic-inspired building, is a place of mourning. It stands for the 1,350,000 people who died during the battles here. Their names are engraved in the stone walls.

This statue stands in the Jardins Biovès in Menton, France, a lush and meticulously maintained public garden located in the city center along Avenue Boyer. The statue visible is the “Monument to Queen Victoria”, commemorating her visit to Menton in 1882. The sculpture depicts Queen Victoria with a symbolic guardian angel by her side, paying homage to her significance and the role she played in popularizing the French Riviera as a winter destination among British aristocracy.

Surrounded by palm trees, rose-covered arches, and seasonal flower displays, the monument adds a regal historical touch to the tropical ambiance of the gardens. The setting, with the backdrop of the mountains and Belle Époque architecture, captures the elegance and timeless charm of Menton...

Japan and the Netherlands commemorated in the year 2000 that both countries "met" for the first time 400 years ago. With the stranding on the Japanese coast of the Dutch ship "De Liefde" (April 19, 1600) a wonderful, sometimes difficult exchange started between two cultures, East and West. In the botanical field, there was a lot of exchange of plants and plant knowledge.

There was regular exchange of people, objects and knowledge through the Deshima trading post near Nagasaki. The Hortus botanicus also had its role as a conduit for many, at that time unknown and now loved plant species. They found their way from Japan via the Leiden Hortus to Dutch ornamental plant cultivation.

The standard-bearer of this plant exchange was Philipp Franz von Siebold. In his honor, a Japanese garden has been laid out in the Hortus botanicus: the Von Siebold Memorial Garden. In this Japanese garden is the statue of Von Siebold, which is of particular interest to Japanese visitors. A bow to the image, and thus to the life and work of Von Siebold, is an important goal for them when visiting Leiden and the Leiden Hortus.

O commemorate me where there is water,

Canal water, preferably, so stilly

Greeny at the heart of summer. Brother

Commemorate me thus beautifully

Where by a lock niagarously roars

The falls for those who sit in the tremendous silence

Of mid-July. No one will speak in prose

Who finds his way to these Parnassian islands.

A swan goes by head low with many apologies,

Fantastic light looks through the eyes of bridges -

And look! a barge comes bringing from Athy

And other far-flung towns mythologies.

O commemorate me with no hero-courageous

Tomb - just a canal-bank seat for the passer-by.

The Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela is one of the most important pilgrimage temples, the resting place of St. James the Greater one of the twelve apostles, disciples of Jesus Christ. His remains are under the main altar.

The cathedral is a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture in Spain, rich in numerous works of art. Inside there is a relief commemorating the visitation of the cathedral and the tomb of St. James by two successive popes - John Paul II and Benedict XVI.

In 2014, the towers of the cathedral were renovated.

A Memorial commemorating American troops who died while based in Berkshire during World War was unveiled by the Princess Royal.

Princess Anne officially dedicated the three new memorial stones at Greenham Business Park.

Greenham Common was a major US airforce base, where thousands of US troops were stationed in the run-up to D-Day.

Military operations ceased at the site in 1992 and it is now a nature reserve and business park.

There was already a memorial at the site to the 33 victims of a glider crash at Greenham on 12 December 1944.

Three days later 16 men died when two B17 Flying Fortress planes collided near the base.

Six months after the Twin Towers fell, they returned in the form of two blue beams of light illuminating the Manhattan skyline. Since then, they have lit the sky annually as a Sept. 11 commemoration known as Tribute in Light. The tradition will continue this year to remember the 14th anniversary of the attacks.

To commemorate the GDR border on the Elbe as a border river, three former observation towers still stand in the area of Konau, Popelau and Darchau. The fence shown in the photo is not in its historical location, but was moved here as an example. During the division of Germany, the fence ran directly in front of the windows of the farms in Konau and Popelau in the middle of the so-called protective strip of the GDR border. Today, these places are in the Lower Saxony Elbe Valley Biosphere Reserve, which offers animals and plants a space worth protecting.

This monument commemorates "The Battle of Bennington" which took place in 1777, in Walloomsac, New York, about 10 miles from Bennington. An American force, led by General John Stark, and reinforced by the Green Mountain Boys, decisively defeated a detachment of General John Burgoyne's army led by Lieutenant Colonel Friedrich Baum. Baum's detachment was sent by Burgoyne to raid Bennington for horses, draft animals, and other supplies. Believing the town to be only lightly defended, they were unaware that Stark and 1,500 militiamen were stationed there. Stark's men enveloped Baum's position, taking many prisoners and killing Baum.

The battle was an important victory for the American cause, as it reduced Burgoyne's army in size by almost 1,000 men, led his Indian support to largely abandon him, and deprived him of needed supplies, all factors that contributed to Burgoyne's eventual surrender at Saratoga. The victory also galvanized colonial support for the independence movement, and played a role in bringing France into the war on the American side. The battle anniversary is celebrated in the state of Vermont as Bennington Battle Day.

To commemorate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012 over 4,200 beacons were lit around the UK and across the Commonwealth. This is one of those Jubilee Beacons near, Abbotsbury, Dorset which overlooks Chesil Beach.

Based on the forecast I'd woken at 4am and drove for about 1.75hrs in the hope of a bit of blue hour colour. Alas there was a large bank of cloud on the horizon as I got to the beacon which showed no sign of wanting to shift anytime soon!

I did wonder though if it might clear the top of the cloud bank before Golden hour ended. It did and this is the result (Couldn't resist the sun star😀).

All Saints' Day (Latin Sollemnitas Omnium Sanctorum) is a Christian feast commemorating all the saints, the "glorified members of the Church who have already reached perfection," both known and unknown. The feast is celebrated in the Western Church on November 1, and in the Orthodox Churches on the first Sunday after Pentecost.

Many people visit the graves of their relatives on this day and the following All Souls' Day. All Souls' Day in the Catholic Church is the day of remembrance for all the deceased. It is a widespread custom to decorate the graves with lights on these days.

On the eve, October 31, in the United States and many countries of Europe folk customs are celebrated Halloween. The word Halloween is derived from the English term All Hallows Eve, the liturgical eve of All Saints' Day. In its current form, which has come back from North America, it has taken on a highly commercialized and secularized form.

So today my minds are with my father! He past away almost 3 years ago.

You past away but my memories still are here. And a person is just gone if we do not think about him anymore. Soon, the 14th of November is your Birthday and i keep our lifetime moments in my heart!

Today marks the anniversary of the day when nothing was the same anymore. From one second to the next, my world was torn apart. Since then, nothing is as it was and I'm just coming home from the cemetery. You fought for your life for a few weeks back then - but in the end the other side won! Weeks full of hope and fear were in vain. But time passes and yet life must go on without you. Today I miss you so much. All the memories come flooding back. Very emotional. And whenever I can't find words anymore I try to express myself with pictures. There would be so many things to tell. But it was no longer granted to us. You will always be in my heart - my beloved dad!

Tracks in the sand

One night I had a dream:

I was walking along the sea with my master.

Against the dark night sky

shone, like streaks of light,

images from my life.

And each time I saw two footprints in the sand,

my own and my master's.

When the last image passed my eyes

I looked back.

I was startled to discover

that in many places of my life's journey

there was only a trace to be seen.

And those were the hardest times of my life.

Concerned, I asked the Lord:

"Lord, when I began to follow you,

you promised me

to be with me in all my ways.

But now I discover

that in the hardest times of my life

there is only a trace in the sand.

Why did you leave me alone

when I needed you most?"

Then he answered, "My dear child,

I love you and will never leave you alone,

especially in times of need and difficulty.

There, where you have seen only a trace

you have seen,

I have carried you."

The monument commemorates Napoleon's defeat at Leipzig, a crucial step towards the end of hostilities in the War of the Sixth Coalition. The coalition armies of Russia, Prussia, Austria and Sweden were led by Tsar Alexander I of Russia and Karl Philipp, Prince of Schwarzenberg. On the first story, a crypt is adorned by eight large statues of fallen warriors, each one next to smaller statues called the Totenwächter (Guardians of the Dead). On the second story, the Ruhmeshalle (Hall of Fame) features four statues, each 9.5 metres (31 ft) tall, representing the four legendary historic qualities ascribed to the German people: bravery, faith, sacrifice, and fertility.

To commemorate the victims of Civil War in Spain, General Franco chose the Cuelgamuros Valley in the Sierra de Guadarrama (now called Valle de los Caidos).Great on the 150 m high, visible from many miles cross, stands on the underground basilica carved into the rock. It comes to it 240 meter long tunnel hewn in granite. In the crypt there are urns containing the ashes of thousands of people (republicans and nationalists) who died in the war. General Franco is also buried in the basilica.

This site commemorates the martyrdom of 14 Franciscan missionaries in the 14th Century who were killed on this spot by the Pagans of the time. The first crosses were erected in 1613 and made of wood. Reinforced concrete crosses were erected in 1916, exactly 300 years after the first crosses were built. The Soviet authorities later destroyed the site, as the regime allowed for no religion, but once Lithuania regained independence, three further crosses were rebuilt in their original place and symbolise the beginning of Christianity in Lithuania.

This monument commemorates the naming of Point Hicks by Captain James Cook after Zachary Hicks who was the first European to sight the east coast of Australia on Cook`s voyage of 1770.

Captain Hicks was James Cook`s senior lieutenant. There has been some dispute as to whether Zachary Hicks actually saw Point Hicks or whether he saw Ram Head about 20 kilometres further up the coast. Although Cook named the promontory Point Hicks it was changed to Cape Everard in 1843 and did not return to Point Hicks until it was renamed in 1970.

There was some doubt to whether this was Cook`s first landfall in Australia in 1770, because Cook had not taken account of crossing the International Date Line when recording his log. Therefore it was not challenged when the cape was later named Everard. In the lead up to Cooks bi-centenary, research was undertaken and the case was presented successfully to restore the rightful name.

Today, December 6, 2024, the Orthodox Church of Ukraine commemorates and celebrates the day of one of the most beloved saints of Ukrainians - Saint Nicholas.

The veneration of St. Nicholas on the territory of Ukraine began with the very baptism of Rus in 998.

Volodymyr the Great was baptized in Chersonesos and brought the icon of Saint Nicholas from there. The prince placed her in the Tithe Church, built on his initiative. Volodymyr ordered to make a separate section for this icon, where it was placed.

The icon of St. Nicholas used to be in almost every house, and people considered him the main helper who could be turned to in case of problems.
