To commemorate the retirement of the InterCity 125 fleet from the Midland Main Line, the staff at Neville Hill depot in Leeds have repainted 43102 into Intercity swallow livery.
Although fitted with an MTU engine (so technically 43302) it has also been renumbered "officially" in the railway systems to 43102.
43102 is also the world record holder for the fastest diesel train and it has been named 'The Journey Shrinker' to commemorate this record.

Commemorating one of the first trained Euro-American naturalists to visit the area, James Peak is bathed in the first warm rays of light with a coat of new snow. Edwin James accompanied the Stephen Long expedition to the southern Rockies in 1820 as the company's botanist, geologist, and physician. He is credited with the first recorded ascents of Pikes Peak and James Peak, although it is fairly certain they had been climbed by Native Americans prior to this time. James also made extensive collections during the expedition, including some of the first plants from the alpine zone above treeline, and several taxa bear his name.
Just peaking up to the right of James Peak's rounded summit is Parry Peak, also named for another 19th century botanist, Charles Parry, who described many species of Rocky Mountain plants, and whose name is also attached to many taxa (e.g. Parry primrose, Primula parryi).
The slopes of Eldora ski area are visible on the right, as are fire scars from the Cold Springs burn of 2016 on the top of one of the ridges between the lens and the summit of James Peak.
to commemorate the last day of service of the Murgtaler Radlexpress in 2019, the train was hauled in this day by a class 218 diesel. The photo was taken after arrival at its terminus Freudenstadt and after running around of the loco, to have it in the right place for its return working in the afternoon. 80 years ago today we remember the enormous contributions and sacrifices made by close to 160,000 members of the Allied forces on D-Day, one of the largest and most complicated military operations in history.

Lisbon, Portugal
At 52 meters (170 feet) tall, Lisbon's Monument to the Discoveries commemorates the five hundredth anniversary of the death of Henry the Navigator, who discovered the Azores, Madeira, and Cape Verde
This interesting and pleasing on the eye piece of memorial-type stonework looks as though it's of some religious significance at first glance but in fact it was erected to celebrate the Coronation of King George the 5th. It's on Aughton Village Green (called Holt Green by locals?). It was of course the host of golden daffodils surrounding it that caught my eye. Aughton, West Lancashire, UK.

The Padrao dos Descobrimentos (Monument to the Discoveries) was inaugurated in .1960 commemorating 500 years since the death of Henry the Navigator who initiated the era of Portuguese explorers and discoveries. The monument shows 33 persons who were in some way involved in the discoveries.
To help commemorate the 50th anniversary of Drax Power Station a couple ofd enthusiast special rail tours will take place this weekend. Yesterday the Branch Line Society operated a circuitous route from Derby to Drax. The motives power was a lovely pair off class 20's and Ione of the newly reengineered class 69's.
The two class 20's, 20118 & 20132 are seen here about to enter the cutting at Walton on what was once the Midland main line. The number of grey haired old blokes (me included) who ventured out with cameras in hand was quite astounding. I must have been one of at least two dozen who chose the old footbridge at Walton as their preferred vantage point. The road bridge in the distance in this image had another eighteen or so phottors blocking the pavement as well.

Commemorating 700 years of history
The Singapore Bicentennial in 2019 marks the 200th anniversary of Sir Stamford Raffles’ arrival in Singapore – a key milestone in our rich and storied history. But our story did not start in 1819. It actually began in 1299.
For over 700 years, we have been open to a diverse flow of people and ideas, and connected to wider geopolitical currents, all of which shaped our evolution. Our history is a rich and expansive one – the journey of an island that has never been constrained by its shores, but has always been made from more.
Each of us is in some way connected to and intertwined with others in this history. 2019 could be the time for us to explore how our past has formed us, discover what this means for our future, and find our way for the future to come.

" A dream of equality of opportunity, of privilege and property widely distributed;
a dream of a land w here men will not take necessities from the many to give luxuries to the few;
a dream of a land where men will not argue that the color of a man's skin determines the content of his character;
a dream of a nation where all our gifts and resources are held not for ourselves alone, but as instruments of service for the rest of humanity;
the dream of a country where every man will respect the dignity and worth of the human personality."

This one seems to commemorate Manitoba's 1970 Centennial celebration - Manitoba entered Canada as the fifth province with the Manitoba Act of 1870 - the first province to join after Confederation. The buffalo and the maple leaf were the symbols used in the Centennial year celebration, I think. Maybe my Manitoban friends can correct me if I'm wrong.

To commemorate tomorrow's Independence Day holiday in the US, here's another snippet from my 8mm movie archives: some excerpts from a movie I made of some July 4 festivities in 1975.
We start with my mom and niece Jeanné setting up the flag. (Your host was too busy shooting the scene to actually, uh, help.) Then it's a walk to the local park with my brother George, niece Jeanné, and an aunt and uncle. At the park, Jeanné goes on a pony ride. She's an avid rider today.
After the obligatory backyard charbecue, Jeanné and my nephew Alex invade a neighbor's lawn sprinkler to cool off. Then my late sister Margie blows out birthday candles—she was born on July 4.
We conclude with a short fireworks finale that definitively answers the question, Did 8mm movie cameras have autofocus?
Have a fun and safe weekend, everyone!
The "LumberJills" A sculpture in Dalby Forest in North Yorkshire to commemorate the role of women who worked in Britain’s woodlands during the Second World War. More than 9,000 women known as lumberjills were recruited from all over the country and posted to forests where they carried out the heavy work of felling and crosscutting trees by hand as well as working in sawmills, loading trucks and driving tractors.

While more recent reconnaissance missions have revealed that a lot of people may have stumbled across this exploitation of a misuse or abuse of the iPhone's panorama function, it seems that few have gone past the novelty and worked toward turning it into art.
Paul Ewing ( of TOTALITY OF REALITY and PANO-VISION groups ), who also discovered and deliberately launched into the use of this technique, and I have worked very hard to turn a novelty into another way of making creative imagery.
Over this past year, we've worked very closely together, carefully and extensively going over everything from metaphorical implications, aesthetics, politics and suggesting different techniques to each other. It's been a real collaboration, one which resulted in our creation of the "PANO-Vision" group, for images created in this fashion. Instructions on how to achieve these results are posted in the group's discussions.

Again, as in the previous image, this is a look at the notion of unlimited growth and progress ... critically. Scientist, Philosopher, Ervin Laszlo, in his book "Dawn of the Akashic Age" frankly points out that the 150 year spree that we've had creating a technically advanced world ... based on oil ... and the destructive myth of endless growth and progress that entails, is about to end. The oil is running out.
This, he says, will cause a severe and traumatic impact that will require an entirely new paradigm of the world and the meaning of our existence itself. Whole new technologies, new social structures with radical changes in business, politics, education, energy, ecology, economics and science will be absolutely necessary. Those changes will be hard won but successful. A lot will be lost but an awful lot more is to be gained.
This image is a look BACK at our time in a metaphor that sees this time as the last great age of the all-devouring consumerist and exploitative paradigm that saw the world as an endless source for the satisfaction for our collective greed. It suggests the collapse Laszlo predicts through the metaphor of distorted tall buildings - a symbol of our age.

The Dodge murals consist of 25 paintings on canvas that are attached to the plaster and four decorated areas that were painted directly onto the plaster—the bright blue sections with flags and stars. The murals depict the military history of New York and commemorate battles with the English, the Dutch, the French, the Iroquois, through to the Civil war and World War One. The artist used his daughter Sara as the model for the central figure: the spirit of New York and the Goddess of Harmony—a symbol of both war and peace

Monument aux morts de l'armee d'Orient et aux heros des terres lointaines [Monument dedicated to commemorate French soldiers and sailors who died in WWI.]
The memorial/monument arch aka 'The Gate of the Orient' was designed by architect Gaston Castel, with Antoine Sartorio as the sculptor; it was inaugurated in 1927 [tripadvisor info]. It faces the Mediterranean Sea and was under repair when this photo was taken - Marseille, France.
The covered bridge was built in 1862 by a certain David I Wood, who used to charge teamsters to travel across the bridge. The bridge was built using wood from Mr. Woods's lumber mill in Sierra County, California. There is a plaque on the northern side of the bridge that commemorates this.
This bridge was built to replace an 1850 bridge that washed away in a storm. At 251 feet (229 feet after the end walls were removed) it is thought to be the longest single-span covered bridge in the United States. As with all such bridges, the cover serves mainly to keep the rain off the load-bearing structure, which would otherwise soon rot from the moisture. Some said covers also made the bridge look like a barn so horses wouldn't be frightened to cross, but this was not universally accepted by teamsters of the day.
This road in the late 1800s was part of the Virginia Turnpike, a link between Marysville and the Comstock Lode silver mines in Virginia City, Nevada. Wagon teams, horsemen, buggies and livestock were charged a toll to cross the bridge. The Turnpike ran 14 miles from Anthony House (submerged under Lake Wildwood) to North San Juan.
The main visitor center to the South Yuba River State Park lies just to the south of the bridge.

Kokoen 好古園
location : Himeji city , Hyogo prefecture, Japan
This garden, Himeji "Koko-en", was constructed in 1992 to commemorate the one hundredth anniversary of the establishment of Himeji municipality.
Himeji "Koko-en" is composed of nine separate gardens, making use of the exact former site of where "Nishi-Oyashiki" (the lord's west residence) and other samurai houses once existed. The original location was confirmed through seven archeological excavations.
Professor Makoto Nakamura of Kyoto University supervised the planning and designing of this garden.
The name "Koko-en" is derived from "Koko-do" the name of Japan's sixth provincial school founded in 1692 in Himeji by the last Lord of Himeji, Sakai family.
All of the nine separate gardens show the essence of the Edo period. The following are some of the many splendors which can be found here. Among attractions, "Oyasiki-no-niwa", the garden of the lord's house, comes first.
Second , "Cha-no-niwa", the garden of tea, has an elaborate tea house, where you can enjoy an authentic tea ceremony. Next, several mud walls with roof tiles on were built as replicas of original walls located here.
There is also a "Nagaya-Gate" which bestows upon viewers the historical feeling of the Edo period. In addition, from Nagare-no-hiraniwa you can enjoy excellent views of the main keep and the West Bailey of Himeji Castle. Finally strolling through the gardens, you can appreciate beautiful trees and flowers of four seasons, the rapids and waterfalls, and covered walkways built of Japanese cypress.
You can feel history and see natural beauty in this garden. It is an impressive and scenic spot located just west of Himeji Castle.

The day consist of an exchange of gifts between sweethearts, loved ones and colleagues. Historically, men gave women roses, and women gave men a book to celebrate the occasion – "a rose for love and a book forever." In modern times, the mutual exchange of books is also customary. Roses have been associated with this day since medieval times, but the giving of books is a more recent tradition originating in 1923, when a bookseller started to promote the holiday as a way to commemorate the nearly simultaneous deaths of Miguel Cervantes and William Shakespeare on 23 April 1616.
