CAMP ARIFJAN, Kuwait — Soldiers from the 1st Theater Sustainment Command and the 143d Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) participated in various social and spiritual activities to celebrate the holiday season.
On Christmas Eve hundreds of service members, Department of Defense civilians and contractors gathered at a hangar decked out for the holidays. Put together by 1st TSC and 143d ESC Soldiers along with the helping hands of Morale, Welfare and Recreation employees, the event included a buffet dinner, a visit from St. Nicholas and a secret Santa gift exchange in front of a Christmas tree. Several Soldiers and civilians demonstrated their singing or dancing skills on stage during a “Camp Arifjan’s Got Talent” show judged by members of the 143d ESC’s junior enlisted ranks.
Though the celebration generated much laughter and applause from the lively crowd, some Soldiers opted to spend Christmas Eve at a more solemn venue.
Chaplains and chaplain assistants deployed to Camp Arifjan hosted a Christmas Eve vigil at the post chapel that evening. The nondenominational Christian service wove scripture readings and traditional Christmas carols before the congregation brought the service to its climax as it illuminated the chapel with hundreds of lit candles.
The celebration continued the next day with a 5k run and a Christmas feast served by the 1st TSC and 143d ESC’s senior leadership at Camp Arifjan’s Dining Facilities. The 143d ESC also hosted a barbecue lunch as well as various sporting activities such as volleyball and cornhole.

CAMP BLANDING, Fla. –The 2017 143d Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) entered its second full day as 12 competitors looked deep with themselves and to one another to find the strength and courage to face seemingly countless challenges that covered the full spectrum of warrior tasks and skills.
The 143d ESC cadre and their Army Reserve drill sergeant partners split the dozen dog tired Soldiers into two even groups. One team departed for Camp Blanding’s Military Operations and Urban Terrain site, while the other proceeded to the post’s air assault course.
The MOUT site comprised seven stations that featured practical exercises that evaluated each competitor’s mastery of essential Soldier skills. From facing movements and weapons assembly to administering first aid and setting up a claymore, every Soldier had to demonstrate their ability to apply what they learned in Basic Military Training with little to no assistance from the strict instructors.
The air assault course tested the Soldiers’ speed, strength and endurance climbed, crawled, leapt and lifted their way through various obstacles designed to humble even the most resilient athlete.
Later that day, both groups switched sites, and all 12 Soldiers received a refresher course in throwing hand grenades.
After 12 hours of constant movement while carrying 35-pound ruck sacks, the competitors returned to the barracks to prepare their gear for an early morning 10-mile road march followed by an Army Service Uniform appearance board.

United Kingdom takes command of NATO Task Group
Pictured: Flag bearers from FGS Brandenburg and HMS Duncan.
On the 30th of June the UK took command of the Standing NATO Maritime Task Group 2 (SNMG2) at a ceremony at Souda Bay Naval Station on the Greek Island of Crete.
Rear Admiral Axel Deertz (German Navy) has been in command of the Task Group for six months and has handed command to Commodore James Morley (Royal Navy). During the ceremony HMS Duncan also took over the role of Task Group flagship from FGS Brandenberg.
The Task Group is made up of ships from a number of different NATO nations and has three main roles. Firstly to remain at a very high state of readiness should a reaction be needed to a military or humanitarian crisis. It can never be predicted what events or emerging threats may arise but the Task Group would be the first on call and ready to respond. To do this the Task Group conducts a series of exercises that are designed to ensure that the group has a good understanding of it’s capabilities. The Task Group is then able to operate as a combined, effective NATO force.

A chair is not merely a place to sit; for the man of purpose and vision, it becomes a throne—a testament to authority, discipline, and the weight of responsibility. To lead is not to simply occupy a position, but to embody it, to carry its burden with unshakable resolve and deliberate action.
In the quiet solitude of such a moment, the true essence of command is revealed. The polished boots resting firmly on the wooden floor echo a life spent in unyielding discipline. The gloved hands, clasped with precision, reflect control not only over the external but also over the self. The uniform, immaculately tailored, speaks of a legacy defined by order, duty, and the enduring pursuit of excellence.
Leadership is more than the decisions made in grand halls or amidst the din of battle; it is in the stillness of moments like this, where reflection sharpens resolve, and strategy is forged. The surroundings—a study steeped in tradition, with its polished wood, leather-bound volumes, and the quiet hum of history—serve as a reminder of the legacy one upholds and the future one shapes.
For the man who commands, even the act of sitting becomes an assertion of dominance, a silent proclamation of control and authority. It is in such moments that the leader not only plans for tomorrow but ensures that every action aligns with the principles of honor, discipline, and unrelenting determination.
How do you embody your authority in moments of stillness? How do you prepare yourself for the weight of decisions that define your path?
