Other reminders of the imperial age are the Roman column in Deangate recovered from the foundations of the Minster and all that survives of what was once a massive military nerve-centre.

A votive to avert the plague epidemic of 1713, it was erected in 1715

The architectural design comes from Giovanni Battista Alliprandi, it was erected by the stonemason Franz Wolfgang Herstorfer, the sculptural decoration was made by Jan Oldřich Mayer and Ferdinand Geiger. After the great famine of 1772, putti and vases from the workshop of František Ignác Platzer were added.

Our trip to Washington, D.C. a couple years ago was one of the more visually interesting I've been on recently. I currently don't seem to be taking many good photos, so I've been going back through the archives and, after a second look, have found quite a few more from this trip that I thought were worth posting, so here they are - enjoy!

FYI, here's the original set from this trip:

Historical Lychakiv Cemetery of Lviv (Lemberg, Lwow), Galicia, Ukraine. Історичний Личаківський цвинтар у Львові.

The folly known as the 'Shobdon Arches' incorporates the most important architectural features of the old Norman church of St John, salvaged when all save its tower was rebuilt in 1749-52. The structure stands on the hillside overlooking the church and is approached via a long avenue of trees opposite the church. It was designed to accommodate the old chancel arch and both the north and south doorways along with their tympana (though the latter were reset erroneously to create further intermediate doorways rather than being repositioned within their original surrounds, a situation that hasn't helped in their preservation) .

Alas their more exposed relocation along with softness of the sandstone led to these carvings becoming disastrously eroded in the last two centuries so that the carvings are now barely even a shadow of their former state. Originally the carvings were some of the very finest examples of the work of the famed Herefordshire School of Romanesque sculpture (as is attested by engravings done in the 18th century which show their richness of detail). They had been virtually intact up to the mid 18th century when the old church was dismantled and replaced by the present church, but their new setting by contrast offered no protection from the elements. An old cast of one tympanum at the V&A (perhaps itself somewhat touched up) indicates the finish these sculptures had before they were lost to weathering, their present condition is lamentable.

Shobdon church is something special and rewards the visitor with its delicate interior. The arches too should be seen even in their current sorry state to understand the story of the site. Both are normally open on a daily basis.

Formerly supported the canopy at the now-demolished Crayford Cinema. Decorated with a design of ferns and shells.

We set the sewer pipe column in place today before I did any more mosaic on it. It was almost too heavy for my handy man as it was. I hate to have to work on this out here but I have no choice.

Corinthian Columns at the side entrance of the former Chatham Academy. This used to be a junior high school from 1908 to some time in the 70's. It is located on Bull street and Oglethorpe avenue, and is currently being used as the superintendent's offices. Oh yeah, Johnny Mercer went here too.
