The columns were about 6-7 feet apart and presented an incredible visual testament to the work of the Maya at Ake. They were illustrated in Catherwood's mid-19th century engravings so even if they have been reconstructed, it's not an extensive job. How the Mayans assembled enormous columns like these, along with the pyramids, without metal tools or pack animals, is one of the great mysteries.

Some old mosques and synagogues in Toledo have "unexpected" christian names, the reason being the buildings were "recycled" as christian churches

DOT Art partnered with the Jerome Gun Hill Business Improvement District to present a cylindrical sculpture by graphic-artist Jenny Hung titled, “Norwood Column” on the sidewalk triangle on East Mosholu Parkway South and Grand Concourse in the Bronx. Inspired by Morris advertising columns used throughout Europe in the late 1800s and early 1900s, the column-like sculpture features custom-designed colorful posters displaying content collected from residents of the Norwood, Bronx area. Community members were invited to submit responses via online submission portals and in-person to a variety of questions about the neighborhood. Sample questions included, “Where do you go in Norwood to get your favorite food?, What’s your favorite park in Norwood and why?, What’s your favorite historical face about Norwood?”. Responses were compiled into a collection of graphic, poster-style images that were adhered to the cylindrical sculpture. Each poster’s custom-designed typeface includes font pulled from local advertisements, signs, shops and storefronts. The set of posters will be refreshed three times throughout the 11 month installation period.

The sun only just rises above the horizon here in Oslo during december and january, producing these incredibly long shadows... It's hard to keep your shadow out of any picture, so why not include it? :-)

I live in Torshov in Oslo, mainly built in the 1910's, with some massive columns and open areas. Those columns you see in the foreground are actually part of a building.

Opposite the Soldier's Tomb is the Triclinium (banqueting hall) with which it was once connected by a colonnaded courtyard. The Triclinium has no remaining facade of its own, the rockface having partially collapsed, but its interior is the most ornate in Petra, with fluted columns and rectangular niches carved into the rock on three sides. The colouring of the rock in here, with its streaks of pink and red, make the effect quite special.

From here you can get a better idea of some of how the different rows of columns play into effect, and something aproximating the veiw that was.
