This is the image I was making when the State Trooper crept up on me from behind last weekend. I'm happy to report that Kevin and I do not have any outstanding arrest warrants and we're definitely not terrorists!

Saint Siméon le Stylite was one of first saints native of Syria.

Living as shepherd in the Vth century, he joined a group of ascetics in the neighborhood of his village.

He stayed there two years, then entered the monastery of Téléda ( Tell Adé).

Not finding the monastic life rather ascetic, he withdrew in the desert hills and, towards 410 - 412, joined monks' community of Telanissos ( Deir Semaan).

In 423, he settled down at the top of a column where he stayed during 36 years.

He preached every day and granted audiences to the pilgrims.

His reputation no cessât to increase, pilgrims came from France, from Italy, from Spain and even from England …

The Greco-Roman city of Jerash (ancient Gerasa) is one of the most important and best preserved Classical sites in the Near East. The city's major buildings and monuments are in good condition and the huge extent of the site is impressive. Restoration and reconstruction of important elements has continued throughout the 20th century and today the ancient ruined city sits immediately alongside the thriving modern town of Jerash.

The sprawling site is dominated by it's more significant remains, which include the seemingly numerous columns of the main colonnaded street and oval forum, along with two fine amphitheatres, several temples and imposing triumphal arches.

Çemberlitaş Column (Column of Constantine, Burnt Column, AD 330), Çemberlitaş, Istanbul. Built to celebrate the founding of Nova Roma -- New Rome -- AKA Constantinople.

The original column was built to commemorate the Russo-Turkey victory in 1886. It was dismantled and sold off to the Germans in 1930 for cash. This replacement, rebuilt from the original blueprints in 2004, now stands in its place.
