Robert Gourlay, a well respected Scottish Reformer came to Upper Canada in 1818 and after seeing many issues with how the Province was being administered began to question the Provincial Parliament and the cadre of Colonial Elites who seemed to run everything. He hit a nerve and was run out of the Province after being illegally arrested and charged. But it was through his efforts that the reform movement got its spark and became the flame of change leading to the eventual establishment of Responsible Government. A plaque marking the location of a property Gourlay was interested in purchasing. He would eventually run for the Provincial Parliament in the 1850s and fail to gain a seat.

The Queens Bush was a mostly forested region in the northern parts of Waterloo and Peel Regions. The Waterloo region areas, especially in the 1820s, became a haven for former slaves who carved out a living from the dense forests, forming small communities, of which many still exist today. Government surveys in the 1840s, however, made the land affordable to those who had made a living from it, and by the 1850s many had left joining other communities of former slaves across what would become Ontario. A historical plaque marks the history of the region and is located in a small park in Glen Allen, Ontario.

Goderich, Ontario founded in 1828 by the Canada Company marked the second town founded by the colonisation corporation established to improve and expand Upper Canada in 1827. The towns natural harbour made it a commercial hub for trade into the American Midwest. Today it's a major urban centre on Ontario's west coast and has a unique radial design not seen in many Ontario towns. Pictured here is the Goderich Lighthouse built in 1847 and is the oldest light on Lake Huron. The tower was heightened after the major storm of 1913.

Ingenio de Diego Caballero de la Rosa (Boca de Nigua, San Cristobal). Remains of the thick masonry-made walls of what may have been a warehouse room or the 'purging house' of the sugar estate. All the ruins are located on a sloping area surrounded by an abundant lush vegatation that may still hide other parts of the complex.

Built in 1795 the building served as the PA State Capitol from 1799-1812, as the Lancaster City Hall as well as the Lancaster County Court House and is located in Penn Square.
Ingenio Boca de Nigua. Ruins of walls and foundations of another of the large (in this case rectangle-shaped) edifices contained in the sugar-making complex. In the far background of photo a modern fenced residence built right across the road that surrounds the complex. Little is known still about these structures because no in-depth studies have been conducted on the remains.
Ingenio de Diego Caballero de la Rosa (Boca de Nigua, San Cristobal). Remains of what seems to be the 'milling house' ( 'casa de molienda' ) of the sugar complex, and maybe part of the 'boiling house.'
Ingenio Boca de Nigua. Exterior view of the non-reconstructed north wall of what seems to have been the sugar-estate's boiling house. Another built space (whose foundations are visible on the foreground in the photo) seems to have existed adjacent to it. Visible through the doorway and opening located at the lower level in the center of the wall, like a horizontal thick line, is the surviving floor and basement vault. The space in the foreground, therefore, seems to have been functionally connected at the undeground level with the space behind the wall.
This abandoned building in Namibia tells the story of the country’s once-thriving diamond trade. A relic of the colonial era, it stands as a reminder of the wealth and hardship that shaped the region’s history.
Ingenio Boca de Nigua. Internal view of what seems to have been the 'boiling house' of the sugar-making complex. The section in the foreground has been subject to intense restauration reconstruction, while the section in the far background seem to be rather untouched in this regard. visible at the floor level in the unreconstructed section are what seem to be remains of vaults on both sides apparently used to support a missing floor.
This little church used to stand in downtown Wilmington, near where the Central Library is now. It fell into disrepair and was scheduled to be demolished, but The Colonial Dames bought it and had it disassembled and moved to this location, next to Brandywine Creek, on land belonging to the state of Delaware. This church served as a field hospital for British troops wounded in the Battle of the Brandywine. The British defeated General George Washington's troops in that battle, but Washington managed to retreat and fight another day.
