The Colombo National Museum, also known as the Sri Lanka National Museum, is a museum in Colombo and the largest in Sri Lanka. Founded in 1877 and maintained by the Department of National Museums, it holds collections of significant importance to Sri Lanka, such as the regalia of the Kandyan monarchs, as well as many other exhibits relating the country's cultural and natural heritage.
Our first day in Sri Lanka began with a whistle stop bus tour of Colombo en route to our first destination.

Overview of the Colombo Railway Museum. The stock was parked one behind the other, with exhibits on the platform itself (as seen), meaning no space to walk down the platform. The other platform (far side) had huge water tanks stored on it (as seen). So this is all I could see of the railway museum. I'd been looking forward to seeing the museum for several months now, so all in all, it was a big disappointment. (Sri Lanka, June 2011).

Apart from being unbelievably cramped and impossible to walk down the platform (as seen), a pack of stray dogs around the area made my driver guide very uncomfortable indeed, and he wanted me to leave the place immediately. This is what alighting passengers at Colombo Terminus station would have seen of the main station building. Now almost in obscurity, the station building houses a tiny indoor display gallery of the Colombo Railway Museum. The museum was officially closed, and my driver guide had to talk the bored and sleepy attendant to open up the place for me, for a small fee of course.(Sri Lanka, June 2011).

Located south of leafy Victoria Park and close to the Havelock Race course, the area of Cinnamon Gardens provided a comfortable place of residence for many of Colombo's wealthier inhabitants. Within the race course itself was a polo ground, a nine-hole golf course and playing fields for hockey, rugby and football.
I can't find any information relating to this handsome residence. Thurburn seems to be a very uncommon name so if anyone out there can help, please let me know. Given its size and its location, it may originally have been a 'chummery'; accommodation shared by young bachelors in which payment for rent, food, servants and gardeners was pooled. Commonly found in India, Ceylon and Burma, chummeries were often owned by a mercantile house to provide accommodation for its young junior staff, recently arrived from Home.
