Groups are smart. Really smart. For over 100 years, research into Collective Intelligence has shown that when you combine the knowledge and opinions of large groups, the results are far more accurate and insightful than from any single participant.

From 7pm -9pm on Thursday 25th August the Craftivist Collective invited the public to join them in stitching a giant love letter at the Hayward Gallery in response to Tracey Emin’s Retrospective. Over 50 people attended.
Emin’s exhibition ‘Love Is What You Want’ explores the theme of love through her personal experiences of abortion, relationships, and sex, and her provocative personality and strong political views.
We were invited by the Hayward Gallery to lead a free craftivism workshop (activism through craft) inspired by Emin’s exhibition. We asked the public to stitch their signature onto their giant embroidered love letter and attach a handwritten tag with a description of how they will be showing their love this summer to other members of society.
We are passionate about showing love to our global neighbours through the power of craft and public art. Founder Sarah Corbett says “We don’t just want to talk about love or show it to a select few. We encourage everyone to show their love to the most vulnerable people in the world through action. Emin’s art, political views and the current political climate are hard to ignore. People joined us to show commitment to love others by lovingly stitching your signature onto our giant love letter, attaching a tag with a description of how you are going to show your love this summer.”

The pouch I keep my Collective Tarot deck in. I made it out of a scrap from an old skirt and the front of an old Flogging Molly shirt.

We are living in a time when we are hyperaware and sometimes even personally involved with contentious issues like climate change, immigration, gun control, social justice, war and economic disparity. We hear concerns commonly discussed but they remain widely unaddressed in our political, social and economic systems.
This juried exhibition asked artists to reflect on the values, priorities and identity they see within their countries and explore what may motivate action or inaction.
