During the trip to Brazil this was the only time I saw the heron. It was at the edge of the river mostly behind low hanging branches.
The striated heron (Butorides striata) also known as mangrove heron, little heron or green-backed heron, is a small heron. Striated herons are mostly non-migratory and noted for some interesting behavioral traits. Their breeding habitat is small wetlands in the Old World tropics from west Africa to Japan and Australia.
This bird was long considered to be conspecific with the closely related North American species, the green heron, which is now usually separated as B. virescens, as well as the lava heron of the Galápagos Islands (now B. sundevalli, but often included in B. striata, e.g. by BirdLife International; collectively they were called "green-backed herons". – Wikipedia
Downhill from the Theatre, the wadi widens to create a larger thoroughfare. To the right, the great massif of Jebel Al Khubtha looms over the valley. Within its west-facing cliffs are burrowed some of the most impressive burial places in Petra, known collectively as the ‘Royal Tombs’. They look particularly stunning bathed in the golden light of sunset.
The Royal Tombs are reached via a set of steps that ascends from the valley floor, near the Theatre. A worthwhile hike from the Royal Tombs leads up to the numerous places of worship on the flattened High Place of Jebel Khubtha, together with a spectacular view of the Treasury. The steps are easily visible between the Palace Tomb and the Sextius Florentinus Tomb. The Royal Tombs can also be reached via the adventurous hike through Wadi Muthlim.

The Dalmatian pelican (Kroespkop pelikaan, pelecanus crispus) is 160 to 180 cm long and has a wingspan of 270 to 350 cm. It resembles the pink pelican. In both pelican species, the plumage is predominantly white. The underside of the wings is almost entirely white, except for the edges of the flight feathers. In the pink pelican, the arm and hand feathers are entirely black, which makes the back of the underwing evenly black, while this black is absent in the Dalmatian pelican. The iris is light, and the feathers on the crown are messily curled (the pink pelican has a dark iris, the skin around the eye is pink, and there is a neat white crest). The legs are grey (flesh-coloured in the pink pelican). The throat pouch is orange-red (yellow in the pink pelican) and offers space for much food. The plumage is the same in both sexes.
The diet consists of fish, of which the animal needs at least 1 kg daily. The birds work together during the hunt by swimming in a semi-circle and thus herding the fish together, after which they scoop them up. In fresh water, the main fish are carp, perch, roach, rudd and pike, and in salt and brackish water, eel, mullet, gobies and shrimps. (Source: wiki)

Collective Soul is an American rock band originally from Stockbridge, Georgia. Lead vocalist and founder of the band Ed Roland enlisted musicians to record a demo in a basement. The group made for the demo took its name from a phrase in the book The Fountainhead, with Roland explaining that "we're not preaching Ayn Rand, objectivism, egoism, or anything...we just dug the name".
The band went from obscurity to popularity that year after the song "Shine" became an underground hit based on radio play.
The group's self-titled second album issued in 1995, was certified RIAA triple platinum, and logged a 76-week run on the Billboard 200. Notable singles from Collective Soul included US No. 1 hits "December," "Where the River Flows," and "The World I Know," No. 2 hit "Gel," and the Top 10 hit "Smashing Young Man."

While walking my dog in the fall an impressive number of gulls sunning themselves would take flight simultaneously only to quickly return to the same place. This went on several times, each flush sending my bird-dog into a small but manageable conniption. I looked for an explanation for these synchronized eruptions but left with more questions than answers.
