COLLECTIVE INTELLIGENCE
Early-Human Narratives
Platform Gallery
Call for Visual Artists & Writers
Deadline: DECEMBER 15/2011
As contemporary culture shifts towards honoring forms of communication that stress immediacy and shorthand (text messaging, email), and moves away from a communal narrative experience, what ancient stories continue to sustain modern communities? What new origin narratives will be created by a culture shaped by digital technology? Why do some stories stand the test of time, while others are forgotten? These are the questions that Platform’s latest exhibit (Collective Intelligence) aims to explore. While our attempts to remain constantly connected via digital technology lead increasingly to a paradoxical sense of isolation, certain stories continue to be shared and retold. This exhibit will look to ancient stories for clues for forming future art communities. We are curious about how the origins of cultural touchstone narratives (stories denying singular authorship or copyright, such as those born of the attempt to explain the seemingly inexplicable or fables passed down to enforce a moral or lesson) mutate in the cultural memory with each retelling, encouraging reinterpretation.

A well-ordered shop at a collective farm in North Korea. Most of the few shops we were taken to were like this: very limited stock, but also free of branding or packaging.
DOT Art partnered with the Union Square Partnership to present an asphalt mural by GERALUZ within pedestrian spaces at Union Square along the 14th Street Busway between Broadway and Union Square West. Painted with the help from members of the community, GERALUZ’s mural titled, “Collective Vision,” highlighted the timely themes of nature, unity and resilience. Members of the community were invited to partake in the painting process.

Newcastle Craftivist Hannah Rose wrote this review:
Newcastle hijacks Valentines Day:
Newcastle heard rumour of a plan to hijack Valentines Day and had to be involved!
Excited to carry on the Crafitivist collective's inspiring project we started screen printing paper, making posters and going out get more people involved. We organised a drop in session with The Star and Shadow's Canny little Library (http://cannylittlelibrary.wordpress.com/) in combination with their letter writing day.
The two things worked well together especially as their envelope making workshop left us with spares we could recruit. Many people turned up throughout the day, getting involved in the practical side as much as the surrounding discussions on inequality, global community, and Valentines Day.
At 7.30 people began to arrive to watch a film in the cinema so the remaining excited craftivists hurriedly transported the letters, envelopes, portable oven etc across the road to finish. The evening ended in us sitting on a studio floor putting all the packets together, sharing out the letters and planning where to take them the next day.
On reflection the session created a nice space to think, chat and share. One person at the session wrote:
‘I lament the loss of letter writing, my friends and I are probably the last generation to have shoeboxes full of letters to each other that we dug out and could reminisce with or laugh at. We had no email or mobile phones then.’
Hopefully the people who found the letters can’t just delete them like an email or text. The letters stand testament to an issue, which can be reopened and revisited any day and everyday.
