How can I make a difference? In 2008, a group of educators and artists formed the International Fiber Collaborative (IFC) a non-profit organization with a mission to create deeper learning experiences through art, collaboration, and cross-curricular programming for individuals and their communities.

IFC’s current initiative, The Dream Rocket Project, started in 2009 has exhibited submissions in over 105 venues; in 2014 submissions will be connected side by side to wrap a 363’ Saturn V Moon Rocket replica at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, AL (48’ taller than the Statue of Liberty).

With every artwork received a student has had to ask; what is my dream for my future, and the future of my community and our world? How can students across our nation with many skills collaborate to make a difference? How can creativity and other subjects such as space, technology, science, and leadership inspire innovation? How can I make a difference?

The expanded second edition of Collaborative Futures has been completed and is now available for purchase, online reading, and for your contribution. (http://collaborative-futures.org/) Collaborative Futures is a collaboratively authored book about the theory and practice of collaboration, with a focus on social media and peer-production. The true nature of collaborative culture as a form of creative expression in the context of digital and network technologies has remained elusive, a buzzword often falling prey to corporate and ideological interests.

Collaborative Futures was written by nine core authors over two intensive book sprints. Adam Hyde, Mike Linksvayer, Michael Mandiberg, Marta Peirano, Mushon Zer-Aviv, and Alan Toner wrote the first edition in an experimental five day Book Sprint in January 2010. Developed under the aegis of transmediale.10, this third publication in the festival's parcours series resulted in the initiation of a new vocabulary on the forms, media and goals of collaborative practice. In June 2010, the book was rewritten as a part of the Re:Group exhibition at Eyebeam, NY. This second edition brought together the original six contributors with three new contributors, kanarinka, Marta Peirano, and Astra Taylor, to challenge the free culture sentiment underlying the original writing. The result is a deliberately multi-voiced tone pondering the merits and shortcomings of this new emerging ideology.

This diagram is my notes for a new blog post coming up that explains how and when I use different prototyping tools. In general, I lean towards low fidelity for collaborative use and when generating ideas, and high fidelity is to capture ideas after they've already been fleshed out.

Collaborative learning is working together to achieve shared goals. It pertains leadership, although the form of leadership can be social within a decentralized and egalitarian group.

KAKEGAWA, Japan – Swirling sand obscures the sunlit sky as a UH-1 “Huey” helicopter touches down on a freshly cut baseball field. Mere moments pass before the Huey’s Japan Ground Self-Defense Force crew chief dismounts from his metallic steed and sprints toward four U.S. Army Soldiers bearing a stretcher. The crew chief’s commanding shout cuts through the roar of rotor blades, springing his American partners into action. With swift, expert precision, the stretcher bearers carry their wounded comrade—a mannequin sporting an Army Combat Uniform—to the Huey.

Casualty evacuation was one of the many training missions orchestrated during Shizuoka Prefecture’s annual Comprehensive Disaster Drill conducted here Sept. 4, 2016. The drill demonstrated the emergency response capabilities of a diverse collection of local, regional, national and international organizations. Its static displays, interactive classes and practical workshops conducted throughout Kakegawa also provided lifesaving lessons for the city’s citizens.

“The people of Shizuoka Prefecture have organized this annual exercise for 35 years,” said Yuka Ogura, a supervisor for the prefectural government’s Emergency Countermeasures Division. “Although the drill’s size and scope has become increasingly complex with the inclusion of specialized government agencies and advanced equipment, the individual residents play the most pivotal role in preparing for the worst.”

Among the participants stood a dozen Soldiers assigned to U.S. Army Japan, I Corps (Forward) and Public Health Command-Pacific. The group packed two Humvees with fuel, rations and medical supplies before embarking on their 120-mile journey from Camp Zama to Kakegawa.

“The U.S. Army has actively participated in this drill since 2010,” said Maj. Donald Kim, U.S. Army liaison officer for to the JGSDF's Eastern Army and Central Readiness Force. “It demonstrates our capabilities in humanitarian response assistance by testing our troops’ expertise in first aid, supply distribution, convoy operations and medical evacuation. Our participation also sends a strong message to our Japanese partners that we are willing and able to provide immediate support when disaster strikes.”

“Since the great east Japan earthquake and tsunami [in 2011], local communities have a greater understanding and openness to collaborate with international agencies in the aftermath of a major disaster,” added Ogura. “The U.S. Army has proved on many occasions that it has the talent and resources to respond to any emergency in the country.”

Throughout the exercise, the American Soldiers worked closely with their Japan Ground Self-Defense Force partners from the 34th Infantry Regiment, Eastern Army, JGSDF. The respective units set up their base of operations at a local gym where they combined resources to coordinate convoy routes, establish mobile communication sites, and set up supply distribution points.

“The JGSDF and U.S. Army have specialized equipment and highly trained personnel that many of our civilian counterparts cannot afford,” said JGSDF Sgt. 1st Class Miura Hatoshi, a squad leader in the 2nd Company, 34th Infantry Regiment. “However, these assets are practically worthless if we don’t properly use them. That’s why it’s essential that we seize every opportunity to train together so we may make the right decisions together.”

The drill concluded with a closing ceremony at a demolished neighborhood used as a training site for search, rescue and recovery operations. Standing alongside hundreds of service members, firefighters, police officers and first responders, Heita Kawakatsu, governor of Shizuoka Prefecture, expressed his appreciation for the American participants.

“The citizens of Shizuoka Prefecture and I are grateful for the support from the U.S. Army and Marines,” said Kawakatsu. “Your skill and professionalism were second only to your care and compassion.”

As the troops shook hands and exchanged small tokens of appreciation with their gracious hosts, Kim reflected on his team’s immense effort, energy and enthusiasm.

“I’m proud of these men,” said Kim. “Many of them have Military Occupation Specialties far separated from the desired skillsets for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief missions. However, their proficiency in their basic warrior tasks and their eagerness to learn from the experts shows our Japanese partners that they can count on us anytime, anywhere.”

Lactation Educator Training

May 16, 2014

CHICAGO—It is 10:30 a.m. on Friday morning and the energy is a combination of nervous and confident among the Perspectives middle and high school students. They are about to debut a collaborative theatrical performance on the Classic Theatre stage as part of the Columbia College Chicago Manifest Urban Arts Festival.

Three years ago, it was almost impossible to envision two groups of students from independent Perspectives schools performing their own works in public and on stage.

Theater instruction was introduced to Perspectives/IIT Math & Science Academy (MSA) about three years ago through the Center for Community Arts Partnerships (CCAP) at Columbia College. Demetria Kedrowski, 6th grade art and English teacher at MSA, welcomed teacher artist students from CCAP to co-teach the arts during her 8th period English composition class. The after school program is now available at Perspectives Rodney D. Joslin Campus.

“We have created an amazing partnership between Perspectives and Columbia College Chicago that has fostered a very positive environment for both our students and the teaching artist students at Columbia,” said Kedrowski.

From in-class instruction of the arts, CCAP teacher artist resident Lydia Ellis-Curry started the first-ever after school Drama Club at MSA as a means to foster the arts with middle and high school students outside of the classroom.

“I began the Drama Club with very little resources and was assisted by Deja Anderson, also a teaching assistant at Columbia,” said Ellis-Curry. “We teach basic acting skills, and improvise our way into final scenes for school performances because these 7th-10th graders have very little to no experience with theater.”

In Drama Club students learn how to think on their feet and use their creativity to build confidence and pride in working together toward a final production. “They are working on their very own show,” said Ellis Curry.

The club partnered with Steppenwolf Theater by hosting students at their plays for youth. “Most of my students had never seen a play before,” said Ellis-Curry. “These kinds of field trips to plays, events, and Columbia College awaken their minds to the possibilities that the arts and theater can provide.”

Ellis-Curry worked with a stable of 15 students to produce original theater. “Lydia was a wonderful drama teacher and advocate for our students,” said MSA principal Julie Puzon. “She opened up new worlds of learning for many of our students by taking them to the Steppenwolf Theater and to Columbia College while helping them develop individually as artists and people.”

“We are so proud of the partnership between Columbia College and the two campuses at Perspectives Charter Schools,” said project manager at Columbia College Chicago Center for Community Arts Partnerships Alyssa Sorresso. “It was so lovely to work with such talented students.”

CCAP provides facilitators who work with the students at MSA and Joslin to create performances for Columbia's Manifest event (an all-day, school-wide showcase). “They come in as guest artists, and create a theatre lesson to help enhance the after-school curriculum,” said Sorresso. “It is a cool cross-school experience that exposes high school students to a college campus and performances.

The students from both Columbia College and Perspectives finished their performances with big and bright smiles.
