The Gentoo Penguin ( /ˈdʒɛntuː/ jen-too), Pygoscelis papua, is easily recognized by the wide white stripe extending like a bonnet across the top of its head and its bright orange-red bill. The gentoo penguin has pale whitish-pink webbed feet and a fairly long tail - the most prominent tail of all penguins. Chicks have grey backs with white fronts. As the Gentoo penguin waddles along on land, its tail sticks out behind, sweeping from side to side, hence the scientific name Pygoscelis, which means ‘rump-tailed’.[1] Adult Gentoos reach a height of 51 to 90 cm (20–36 in),[2][3] making them the third largest species of penguin after the two giant species, the Emperor Penguin and the King Penguin. The Gentoo penguin calls in a variety of ways, but the most frequently heard is a loud trumpeting which is emitted with its head thrown back.[4]

The Chinstrap Penguin (Pygoscelis antarctica) is a species of penguin which is found in the South Sandwich Islands, Antarctica, Deception Island, the South Orkneys, South Shetland, South Georgia, Bouvet Island and Balleny. Their name derives from the narrow black band under their heads which makes it appear as if they are wearing black helmets, making them one of the most easily identified types of penguin. Other names for them are "Ringed Penguins", "Bearded Penguins", and "Stonecracker Penguins" due to their harsh call.

It was a tough decision cropping the right hand side of the picture where I was standing taking the photograph. Unfortunately I had to consider myself a distracting element in the overall image.

Antarctica is Earth's southernmost continent, encapsulating the South Pole. It is situated in the Antarctic region of the Southern Hemisphere, almost entirely south of the Antarctic Circle, and is surrounded by the Southern Ocean. At 14.0 million km2 (5.4 million sq mi), it is the fifth-largest continent in area after Asia, Africa, North America, and South America. For comparison, Antarctica is nearly twice the size of Australia. About 98% of Antarctica is covered by ice that averages at least 1 mile (1.6 km) in thickness.

"Dense, thick fog, hangs over central London in the darkness of a winter morning... Lights are smudges in the air... Big Ben is almost invisible, a ghost of a clock face... People are starting to move about in the cold temperatures, a mans breath smokes and freezes in the air as he goes on his morning run... a silence and stillness dominates the mood"

In case anyone remembers my description of one of the last cityscape uploads: it was windy and bitterly cold on that evening on Chinese New Year´s Day - I wanted to express the weather conditions with the tonal setup of this image.
I´ll be leaving for the northeast part of China today and continue to successfully freeze my butt off over there.
I don´t particularly enjoy shooting in the cold - it´s really debilitating, with the simplest of things suddenly posing a real challenge.
But I´m also looking forward to a region that hasn´t been shot to death yet - unlike Shanghai ;)
