Wisconsin Cold Storage complex in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. November 2012. East Florida Street, west of South Water Street. Unused red-boarded spur crosses Florida St (from active UP ex-CNW trackage to south) and enters building through roll-up door.
My new grocery store in Singapore. Amazing selection of speciality items from around the world...with an excellent deli! Kind of like a little version of Whole Foods...but only better since you can have them grill sausages for you and sit on their terrace and drink cold beer!

While exploring a local mountain, Neversink in Reading, PA, this wonderful gem revealed itself from the brush and trees. Barely visible from the outside except for a portion of the doorway wall this old underground room was once used to store wine and food that needed to be kept cold. Built into the side of the mountain where natural springs emerge, the cold water keeps the inside of this room quite cool even in the hot summer months. Ice cut in the winter and stored inside usually insulated by straw, also was used to keep these cellars cool through the summer. Two of the hooks used to hang meat can be seen in the photo.
These 'cold cellars' as some call them, are normally much smaller than this one. This structure is about 5-6 meters wide, 19-20 meters deep and the ceiling is two stories high. In the late 1800's to early 1900's there were as many as five hotels on this mountain and this cellar was the cold storage for one of these hotels. All the hotels are long gone and the mountain has been reclaimed by nature except for a few residential homes that are scattered about the forest. This is one of the few remnants of a once very active mountain with people coming from the city of Philadelphia to rest and relax in the clean cool mountain air.

I opened the door a bit more, but I did NOT go in there. The hinges swung real easy and that latch was massive. Besides it was dark. About this time I became aware of a low "ooooooo oooooo oo oo emmanating from ....somewhere... everywhere. 'Ah!' sez i, 'Pigeons, just pigeons.'
