While so much of the Rock Island remains, portions of it continue to leave us, as evidenced by this scene from downtown Topeka. Looking northeast from the corner of 1st and Quincy, workers have recently removed the ex-RI tracks that served the original RI depot at 1st and Kansas, a number of the industries in the area, and connected them to both the Missouri Pacific and Santa Fe.
The building in the foreground here had originally been the Mutual Ice & Cold Storage building, and currently, Leonard Meat & Produce uses the space. The further building is the recently renovated Parkhurst Davis Mercantile Co. building. Later, Theo Poehler moved into the same structure.

Before planning a cold store it is important to define operational and technical specifications. These are strictly dependent on products, stores, storage conditions, environment, energy and personnel. The publication Guide to a refrigerated store (IIR, 1976) includes an exhaustive checklist worthy of use at this planning stage.
Chicago's Fulton Market district has been replaced by hip restaurants and the white collars of office workers. This gritty Chicago working neighborhood that once had many meatpacking plants have moved out. Soaring property values have made many of these meatpacking plant sell and move out to the suburbs or to other parts of Chicago. Fulton Market has changed so much in just a few years.

Cold Storage, Holland Village, Singapore. Digging for some stuff to upload today, something mundane for you all...
I saw this building and several others on the same lot, stopped and took a couple of pics. As I was shooting, the owner approached me and told me the history involved. He said that he's the 5th generation owner and one of his great grandfathers way back settled on this parcel. He was a retired British Officer and was granted this land by the King of England. As it was passed from father to son, each generation added more buildings. This one happens to be a combination...one floor was a slaughter house, the next was a tannery, and the last was a mill and cold storage.

The relative positioning of the different parts will condition the refrigeration system chosen. The site of the cold chambers should be decided once the sizes are known, but as a general rule they should be in the shade of direct sunlight.
The land area must be large enough for the store, its annexes and areas for traffic, parking and possible future enlargement. A land area about six to ten times the area of the covered surface will suffice.
Beorma Quarter - Digbeth - progress as of late May 2014.
The new building going up on the corner with Allison Street is about 2 floors up!
Meanwhile scaffolding is going up around the old Digbeth Cold Storage Building.
The Centrepoint is amongst the largest and most popular shopping centres in Singapore, meeting virtually every need of tourists and locals alike. Here you'll find the legendary Robinsons & Co. Took this shot from the new Orchard Central upper balcony. You will not be able to use a tripod as the parapet is much too high. I just get a firm grip on my cam and rest it at the edge of the parapet using guess work to get the frame I wanted. The speed was 1/6 even though ISO was at 800. Just hold my breath and fire away. As usual out of several shots one will be right on target.
Just 2 bracketed pics blending with some light contrast and sharpening on CS3.

These were recently posted around the Cleveland Cold Storage building; fire sprinkler system removed, stairways unsafe, and no ventilation. Just a sign of the soon demise of this building.
This is another view of the rooftop of the cold storage building in the CMD that is being converted to something profitable. As of the beginning of February the structure is still intact.
