One of my insect pets, meet the Madagascar Hissing Cockroach! Read more about this interesting yet misunderstood insect on this web site:

This one is a female, and seems to be content perched on my forehead. I think it likes to bask in the warmth of my skin.

Found during a night walk in Bako national park. Common cockroach.

The Bug Zoo has the cutest cockroach enclosure ever - dolls' furniture. Unforunately none of them were seated at the table or on the living room furniture when I was there, but I did catch one lounging in the china hutch.

Ectobius lapponicus or Ectobius lucidus

The Madagascar hissing cockroach (Gromphadorhina portentosa), also known as the hissing cockroach or simply hisser, is one of the largest species of cockroach, reaching 5 to 7.5 centimetres (2 to 3 inches) at maturity. They are native to the island of Madagascar.

Mark and I found this guy on our walk and couldn't resist a photo!

This is perhaps a household type of Huntsman spider (アシダカグモ). The size is a bit large, about 3 - 4cm long including legs, so it made me feel somewhat weird. But, for it seems to eat cockroaches I don't like, I let it stay in my room and hunt them!

I found heaps of these cockroaches in a fissure in a rock on top of Mount Halifax. Very kewl

A pottery piece that Luisa and I made. There's a red heart on the other side of this mug. :-)

This was made of porcelain clay, thrown on a wheel and trimmed by Luisa. I painted the piece, then gave it back to Luisa. Luisa then fired it in a kiln, glazed it with a clear glaze, then fired it once more.

Look at my long antennas...

It's a good thing I looked in my mug before I took a swig. Hahaha.

When I found it was eating a piece of bread.

I never take a pic. of the whole bug.

Climbing on my mineral water bottle.. :S

These cockroaches like to spend their time hiding among leaf litter and in hollow logs. When disturbed they do hiss, quite loudly!

Most people are familiar with our butterflies, but we also have some *amazing* live insects in our collection. Some are on display in the Hall of Entomology, and some go out to schools through our Bugs on Wheels program. Our entomologist, Erin M, raises these amazing arthropods, and she let us invade their abode with a couple of cameras recently. We came away with these photos, and hopefully a pretty cool video series (coming soon!)

Cockroach under Ringflash, see the reflection on his head.

I like our cockroaches...they just go about their business without bothering anyone. Whenever I find one of these little cockroaches I think "Oh, it's that one again" but when I upload and compare to others I've found they always seem to be different.
