For a hot humid place, Hawaii has remarkable few bugs. While I did read that mosquitoes do exist there, I don't usually notice any bites, and I am usually the first one to get bitten. We only saw the one cockroach, which had impressively large antennae. Apparently geckos help keep the cockroach population at bay.

On of the biggest differences between Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches and American Cockroaches is the absence of wings.
Most people are familiar with our butterflies, but we also have some *amazing* live insects in our collection. Some are on display in the Hall of Entomology, and some go out to schools through our Bugs on Wheels program. Our entomologist, Erin M, raises these amazing arthropods, and she let us invade their abode with a couple of cameras recently. We came away with these photos, and hopefully a pretty cool video series (coming soon!)

While waiting for a plane, I was reaching to get my Nintendo DS out of my bag, only to realize this 4 year old girl nearby had one as well. I taught her how to play in the little chat bits of it so we were doodling different images for comparison to each other. She told me to draw a cockroach, and then she drew one too. Highly entertaining. Good moment shared with a stranger.
