Madonna and Child
FILIPINO
17th Century
Solid Ivory with traces of gilding and polychromy.
Head of Virgin replaced.
Provenance: Collection of Dr. Porfirio J. and Mrs. Socorro Rodriguez Callo
Purchased from Likhâ Antiques.
A solid ivory figure of the Madonna and Child carved during the 17th century. The Madonna stands on an "Ensaymada" (brioche) cloud base typical of early renditions of the Mother and Child. On the base of the image is carved a small angel head with outspread wings. Horns of crescent moon now missing although large holes at the sides of the image indicates where these were originally included as part of the iconography. Tuck or "suksuk" present in the back. The Virgin stands on a black integral base.
The Virgin's gown crosses her body laterally at the waist, folds gracefully backwards and falls in soft, agitated folds at her feet. The Virgin is shown clasping the foot of the child typical of Philippine images of the Virgin and Child carved during the period. This feature shows the influence of the Spanish sculptor Juan Martinez Montanes.
The slight hint of knee, the toes peeping out of the Madonna's voluminous gown and the "suksuk" present in the back are clear indications of this image's Philippine provenance.
Numerous cracks and signs of wear indicative of this image's great age.
Many similar renditions of the Madonna and Child made during the 17th century are published in: Jose, R. T. (1990). Images of faith: Religious ivory carvings from the Philippines. Pacific Asia Museum: Pasadena, CA, pp 65 - 70, 114 - 115.

Amber and I went to Southease and parked up. The weatherman promised a nice day but he got it wrong again. Anyway we walked up the river to Lewes through the town to Juggs road and up onto the South Downs way and then back to Southease via Telscombe.. The cloud base was below the top of the downs so lots of mist and occasional rain. But we both had a really good walk covering about 16 miles and due to the weather mostly landscapes for the day with the odd wildlife image.
The ARC honored Gwinnett during its January Board meeting for upgrading to a Gold Level Certified Green Community. Gwinnett is the first county in the metro Atlanta region to achieve certified Gold level status.
The County was certified in 2010 at the Bronze level and achieved certification at the Silver level in 2012. Led by the Gwinnett County Department of Support Services, multiple departments worked together to achieve this certification by:
•Installing bicycle parking at all 60 community facilities, providing an alternate transportation option for visitors.
•Setting a goal to conduct water audits on a total of 113 government buildings by the end of 2018 and implementing conservation measures that will result in an estimated 1.3 million gallons of water saved per year.
•Including requirements for shared, joint parking and reduced off-street parking in its Unified Development Ordinance.
•Pioneering a cloud-based program that searches for the most efficient route for each home-delivered meals driver. The program has reduced fuel costs by 28 percent, increased meals delivered by 8 percent, and reduced emissions by 1.75 tons in the first year of use.

So from the shot uploaded yesterday, I had clambered up Red Pike in the pouring rain, reaching the cloud base at Bleaberry Tarn. The whole of teh High Stile ridge was a complete white out, map & compass all the way. Descending off of High Crag, I finally found daylight again when I got to Gamlin End & I was finally rewarded with sight of Seat, Haystacks & Fleetwith Pike which formed the resty of my route for the day.

The weather was forecast to be pretty awful throughout the entire of the UK this weekend. Regardless of where we decided to visit we knew that there was greater than 90% chance of rain with a cloud base of 300-500m ASL. Pants!
For a change, we decided to head to my Dad's place in North West Cumbria.
Having been there before, I decided it'd be nice for me to take gemma to Crummock Water, famous for its leaping salmon in the autumn. After capturing a few shots at Crummock, we walked back to the car along the river Cocker.

(Taken from similar viewpoint to previous image taken on 1st.)
It should be noted that the blowing snow was from the ground only.
No snow had yet started to fall from the thickening frontal cloud layers.
Clearly, conditions become many times worse when fresh snowfall commences and the main cloud base lowers onto the mountains themselves to give a true whiteout.
Extremely difficult conditions which only the seasoned Cairngorm worker/climber/skier will not be shocked by.
Wind speeds of up to 175mph have been recorded on Cairngorm mountain near here. As a (now retired) meteorologist who first visited here in 1964, I can confirm that wind speeds are often much higher than the theoretical strength given by isobaric weather charts. The wind and windchill must never be underestimated when planning trips here, particularly if you have never personally experienced what can happen when the weather deteriorates.
Many have died of exposure in this beautiful but challenging region. A young German girl even succumbed to exposure in the month of August after her father took her across the plateau in wet weather.
A couple of weeks ago was the 40th anniversary of Scotland's worst mountaineering tragedy.
Even more sad was that seven teenagers (14-18 years of age) - who had put their lives and trust in more experienced, but still relatively young, leaders - who had shown a good deal of ignorance and bravado - were the innocent victims who were led onto the plateau (straight ahead in picture on top of head wall of coire), where they perished during 48 hours or so of smothering, drifting snow, wind speeds up to storm force, and sub-zero temperatures.
Relatively poor communications in those days meant that, though they set out onto the plateau in the early afternoon of a Saturday, they were not reported missing until later on Sunday and an organised search in appalling conditions was not able to be co-ordinated until Sunday night.

Madonna and Child
FILIPINO
17th Century
Solid Ivory with traces of gilding and polychromy.
Heads of Virgin and child replaced. Repair to hand of Nino.
On this image, there is no angel or putti present. The Virgin's gown crosses her body laterally at the knees, folds gracefully backwards and falls in agitated folds at her feet. The Virgin is shown clasping the foot of the child typical of similar image of the period. This feature shows the influence of the Spanish sculptor Juan Martinez Montanes.
The telltale "tuck" or "suksuk" indicating this image's Philippine provenace is very much evident in this example. National Musuem sticker present in back as well as an inventory label from Likhâ.
Many similar renditions of the Madonna and Child made during the 17th century are published in: Jose, R. T. (1990). Images of faith: Religious ivory carvings from the Philippines. Pacific Asia Museum: Pasadena, CA, pp 65 - 70, 114 - 115.
The HS748. Lovely aircraft. 1994, Te Anau airfield, waiting for one of these to arrive, the weather was a bit 'iffy' and the cloud base was low, but this stalwart machine and it's equally stalwart pilot arrived to take us to Queensland. Top man! This brochure was in the waiting room. Looking back, the pride in their aircraft strikes me. I've never seen anything like this in the UK. It contains all the information I want to know! Thank you. Mount Cook Airlines!

4th day of journey - At Metropolitan pub, near Baker Street. London, England.
J D Wetherspoon pubs have a standard pub menu throughout the country and serve a variety of low priced cask ales, having over 650 Cask Marque accredited houses. There is often a local ale available. Pubs in the chain generally do not play background music, and usually do not have televisions or screen live sports or news and when there is a television, the sound is muted with subtitles displayed instead.
Many of the features aimed for in Wetherspoon pubs, such as quiet bars and reasonably-priced lunches, are influenced by George Orwell's essay The Moon Under Water, in which Orwell described his concept of the perfect pub. Several Wetherspoon-owned pubs bear the name "The Moon Under Water".
Many of the pubs are in large converted buildings, such as cinemas, banks, churches, supermarkets, swimming baths or railway stations.
The decor and fittings tend to be in a faux-Victorian public house style with the addition of photos of the local area and information boards concerning local history. They take pride in the standard of decor in the toilets, some of which have won national awards.
Since November 2006, some Wetherspoon pubs have offered free Wi-Fi internet access via The Cloud based on availability. Many pubs have Itbox quiz machines.
