Secretary Walker joined AmeriHealth Caritas Chair and CEO Paul Tufano on March 29 for the grand opening of AmeriHealth Caritas Delaware’s new community wellness center, a hub of information, education, coordination, nutrition and fitness designed to serve those in need in the Bear area. The center, which is open to AmeriHealth Medicaid clients and non-clients, offers health screenings, fitness and nutrition classes, care management services and assistance with medical appointment scheduling and transportation.
Joining Secretary Walker and Tufano were state Sen. Bryan Townsend, state Rep. Kendra Johnson, AmeriHealth Caritas Delaware Market President Emmilynn Lawson, and Division of Medicaid and Medical Assistance Director Steve Groff and Deputy Director Lisa Zimmerman.
“What we’re doing is broader than just health care,” Tufano said. “It’s a partnership.” He said people who have Medicaid coverage or are impoverished are “made to feel they are not valued.” With this wellness center – and through other outreach opportunities – Tufano said it is AmeriHealth Caritas’ way of saying that people are valued and always welcomed to drop by.
Secretary Walker said that is the essence of what AmeriHealth is doing. “You are helping us to build a stronger and healthier Delaware by meeting people where they are.” As a family physician, she said she knows that 90% of what affects a person’s health has nothing to do with the clinical care she provides. “For the clients who are served at this wellness center – and other clients across the state – their health is impacted by where they live, their housing, their job, their transportation, the safety of their neighborhood, and how close they are to grocery stores, parks or health care providers.”
Sen. Towsend send AmeriHealth’s commitment to Medicaid clients “will give people a chance to live up to their potential.” Rep. Johnson added, “I just see nothing but hope and resources here.”
