Near the end of 2014, staff at Passaic County Jail in New Jersey began tracking occurrences of ‘use of force’ (UOF) events within the facility, with specific emphasis on mentally ill inmates. A recent report by Dr. Joel Federbush, Corizon Health Psychiatrist, and Allison Genberg, Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) for Corizon Health, details the findings of this tracking, noting a significant reduction in such UOF events.
In 2015, there were a total of 45 UOF incidents. Of these, 20 inmates with mental health issues were involved. During the previous year, there were a total of 59 UOF incidents. This shows a reduction of 24% in events that occurred during 2015, indicating that the mental health population is being better managed overall. And, inmates are accepting treatment willingly, further reducing the need for custody intervention, which helps to ensure the safety of our facility staff.
Thanks to Dr. Federbush and Ms. Genberg for taking the initiative to track the effectiveness of our mental health care and show such a significant reduction in UOF events at Passaic County Jail.
