I don't talk about this much. Or if I do I tuck it carefully into a mouthful of the glib snark that I like to use to talk about despair in a way that lets me kick it away from me like a drowning swimmer.
I've been clinically depressed, and untreated, on and off for years. I didn't even realize what it was when I was in the midst of it, even though I'd been through at least two other major episodes in my mid-teens and late 20s. That's scary.
I know that some of you have been worried about me and nudging me toward getting some help. Thank you for caring. I don't say that enough, but thank you.
Most of you probably have no idea what I'm talking about. That's cool too, because that's how I try to keep it, how a lot of us try to keep it. I'd be a bit freaked out if it were obvious to everyone but me.
For a long time I was deeply predjudiced against anti-depressants -- until I saw them actually help a loved one come back from a really frightening state. I don't expect or want to always need one, but I'm not ashamed to say that I'm taking one now. It's helped me. From talking to other people -- your mileage may vary. But like I said, it's helped me.
Sometimes we jokingly call them 'happy pills'. They're not, really, they're more like 'keep my head out of the oven' pills. But they are very useful to that purpose.
Anyway, for those of you who've been concerned: I'm doing better, thanks.

A key milestone in our medical students' journey, the White Coat Ceremony marks the formal transition to full time clinical training at our affiliated hospitals and general practices.
