I’ve been in and out of town lately and haven’t gone out for any photography in awhile. There was an incoming storm that I was hoping would bring some nice shooting conditions with it. This morning I got up at 5:15 to check the weather. It looked good so I headed off to West Cliff. I tend to look for reasons I shouldn’t go when it comes to sunrise shoots. It’s going to be too clear, too overcast, the tides are wrong and so on. Luckily today I was unable to come up with any. The sunrise turned out to be well worth waking up early.
Looking out the window this evening it looked like it was pretty decent. I didn’t go out again though. It was dinner time and I was hungry. Hopefully I didn’t miss anything too spectacular.

Chalk cliffs at Birling Gap in East Sussex suffered 7 years worth of erosion in the storms this winter.
On the way to the Summit of Slieve League - we never actually got to the top. These cliffs are supposed to be the highest sea cliffs in Europe...
So yesterday I stayed out longer than usual by the clifftops and I took this photo while the sun was setting, which is unbearably early now. I suddenly remembered to stop looking at the scene from behind a camera and just sat by the cliff edge and watched the sun set with my own eyes. It was magical. I think I'll start to start taking more photos during this time of day.
However it was tricky to get back along the coast path in almost complete blackness, but at least I didn't fall into the sea, so there's a plus.
I was walking on the cliff to the right one day last month when a security guard came up to kick me off the site. People used to camp up there and now they have security guards watching the spot. He told me someone had died after falling off a cliff. "This cliff?" I asked. "One of them," He said. I had read about the death and wondered where he fell from. I guess it doesn't matter. They're all dangerous.
I drove up here last month intending to shoot north of the old pier, but stopped when I saw the trail down to this spot. I'd never been down here. Not sure why not, maybe it just looked uninviting or something. I went down and loved it so much I basically camped here for a week to shoot some differing conditions. This was a shot from a day with calm surf but some nice color.

From wikipedia:
The Cliff Palace is the largest cliff dwelling in North America. The structure built by the Ancient Pueblo Peoples is located in Mesa Verde National Park in their former homeland region. The cliff dwelling and park are in the southwestern corner of Colorado, in the Southwestern United States.
The Cliff Palace contains 23 kivas (round sunken rooms of ceremonial importance), and 200 rooms. One kiva, in the center of the ruin, is at a point where the entire structure is partitioned by a series of walls with no doorways or other access portals. The walls of this kiva were plastered with one color on one side and a different color on the opposing side.
The site was inhabited in the 13th century and was abandoned by the year 1300.
