Advancing technology continues to improve our ability to see things more clearly and to understand our surroundings more thoroughly. This is certainly true in photography where advances in hardware and software make capturing what was once impossible, simple pleasure. This young lady was captured taking off in the evening, in the dappled light of a pine tree. The ISO was 20,000 with a shutter speed of 1/3200. A year ago, the image would have been suboptimal for use. Now, it’s a pleasing photo of a beautiful house finch, going about its evening chores. #HouseFinch

Clearly I don't have to ask the following here on Flickr but I will anyway because it's more of a statement……

Aren't pictures great? They can transport us to another place, another time. Here I am, sitting in chilly but sunny Wisconsin - middle of the day and I can be whooshed across part of the world to a magical city as the sun sets before me. Photographs - I don't know what I'd do without them.

Love them or hate them, wildlife photography hides have their place in life. This family of badgers came out within minutes of the hide owner leaving, & us setting up our cameras for the shots. They were clearly hungry & scurried around the pool looking for every last peanut.

Clearly, the Creston Sub is in the middle of a huge tie project. Once the work window opened, signals came for 10 Westbounds to roll towards Lincoln.

Clearly, I have forgotten the name of the fish. Given its black stripes on a white body, I thought best to call it the "zebra fish. My apologies to the marine world upfront.

Clearly shooting pictures of fishes in an aquarium is a tough ask. Firstly, you have to deal with a very thick layer of glass which in most cases is quite dirty owing to people's palm imprints. Second, fishes rarely stay in one place long enough to get a clean shot. Third, their direction of movement is quite unpredictable as they rarely seem to move in a straight line making it that much for difficult to preempt where they might be the next moment. Fourth, given so many moving objects at the same time, it is quite a challenge to focus on any one and the auto focus (you can safely give up on the manual focus mode) keeps hunting for focal points making it a cat and mouse game!

After a few attempts, I managed to get a clean shot.

Clearly this is back in my hotel room, however it shows what I wore during the glamorous dinner we attended on Friday night. The smart grey jacket you saw earlier served well through the streets of Manchester and was set aside when I reached the restaurant. During the meal I was all in black, with my sparkling sequinned dress and a little shrug over my shoulders. The two together produce a very pleasing neckline.

A side, gear comment. I was surprised by the amount of vignetting in the recent series of shots I have taken with my Tamron 100-400. A good deal of correction has been required. This has not lessened my enjoyment of the final result, but it is something I have noticed.

A southbound CN grain train passes through Effingham, IL on the morning of November 28, 2020. Led by a pair of GEVOs, the lead unit sports a few spotting features which were unique to CN’s early orders of these engines, including the ‘teardrop’ windshields with a lowered outside corner, and red marker lights on the nose. A glance at what’s visible of the trailing unit reveals that these features were omitted from subsequent orders.

A reflection of the day. If I could have seen so clearly ahead of me to all the great walks I remember on those hills I might have prevented the sky falling into a hole before me. The sky scowled in anger, moody clouds in the wings, and me just the wrong side of where I wanted to be, mourning my regret.

I didn't write this but I confess it is mighty similar to some of the nonsense I produce:

Hidden away on a bleak edge of the south west part of the Staffordshire Peak District is Blake Meer, or Black Mere Pool, sometimes known as Blackmere Pond, which, according to local legend has its very own mermaid. It was believed to be a bottomless pool though in more modern times it has been proved otherwise. According to local legend Blake Mere is reputed to be linked to nearby Doxey Pool by a "U" shaped tunnel. Both are a similar height above sea level and maintain similar water levels but one has been shown to be higher than the other and the local geology is not thought to uphold the notion of a tunnel.

Landlocked Blake Mere Pool

What is a mermaid doing in Staffordshire, a landlocked county in England with Blake Mere Pool many miles from the nearest sea? There are legends of other pools with mermaids inhabiting them in the Peak District and other parts of England also miles distant from the sea. Some are said to be linked to the sea by a tunnel which the mermaid traverses at certain times of the year such as Easter. Blake Mere Pool has two very different explanations concerning the origin of its mermaid.

For the love of a sailor!

One account tells how a sailor from Thorncliffe, a nearby town, fell in love with a mermaid he met on one of his voyages and brought her to the pool so that they could both live close together. However he was a mortal and she was an immortal being and the sailor eventually died leaving her in the pool all alone.

She is said to have wept bitterly at his death and pined and pined over many long years for her love. She longed to leave the small, land-locked lake which now seemed like a prison to her and yearned to return to the freedom of the open sea but could not do so because it was so far away. Eventually she grew bitter and angry towards humans and haunted the lake, luring people to their death.

The condemned girl

The other account is more violent and brutal and tells of how a beautiful local girl refused the affections of Joshua Linnet, a local man. Linnet, furious at being spurned falsely accused the girl of witchcraft. She was tried and sentenced to death by drowning in Blake Mere Pool.

As she drowned, with her dying breath she is said to have cursed Linnet. His body was found three days after at the side of the pool with his face bloodied and rent by claw marks. Local legend says that animals will not drink from the pool, or birds fly over, or settle on it, because the girl’s spirit turned into a mermaid and haunts the pool.

Sightings

Many people have claimed to have seen the mermaid. In the 19th century local people tried to drain the pool to see if it was indeed bottomless. They commenced digging a ditch from the southern banks of the lake. Evidence of this can still be seen.

As they were digging the Mermaid is said to have rose menacingly from the lake and frightened them into stopping the work. She warned them she would drown the local towns of Leekfrith and Leek unless they ceased immediately. Terrified they obeyed and returned home.

"Mere-maid" or mermaid?

In the second explanation it may be the spirit is a "mere-maid" rather than a mermaid. It may refer to the girl who was accused of witchcraft and sentenced to death by drowning.

What ever the original explanation it does seem extraordinary that mermaids are reputed to inhabit such pools of water so far from the sea. There are two other pools in the Peak District reputed to be the homes of mermaids, the Mermaid’s Pool, Kinder Scout and Doxey Pool. Like Black Mere Pool they are also said to be connected to the Atlantic Ocean. These are two common traits that are held by other pools in Britain that are reputedly the home of mermaids.

The Mermaid Inn

Nearby the pool is the 17th century Mermaid Inn is a Grade II listed 17th Century Coach Inn that has great traditional and modern facilities with marvellous views of the area. It is about 500 metres or a 10 minute walk to Blake Mere Pool from the inn.

Clearly not a Roman Forum. Downtown Mülheim an der Ruhr, we have these horrible apartment towers built in the 70´s with a shoping center to serve like the traditional Roman forum. Rhurgebiet monstruosity at its best.

I actually spotted this place on street view, and went to go see it for myself. And from what I can tell, I think this place was a sod home? What do you think? I can’t quite tell if the bricks are, well, brick, or if they’re made of earth or mud and dried. I’m sad to see it falling down but glad I found it when I did! Just look up “sod house” and see what I mean. It’s similar, at least. This place was clearly posted so I couldn’t go further than these photos, unfortunately.

Clearly, a pistol primer doesn't make for a very pretty picture, but today's Macro Monday topic is Begins with the letter P, and the tiniest P-thing thing I could find to make a macro out of was this pistol primer, which is so small, six of them would fit on the nail of my little finger. This is the back of a primer, which faces into the cartridge case, towards the powder charge, and when the cap is struck by a firing pin, it crushes the anvil, which you see here, sending hot gases into the powder charge, which makes the gun go boom.

I have hundreds of these primers left over from the days when I used to reload my ammunition. Back in those day, my favorite pastime was competing in shooting matches, mainly rifle matches (Several decades ago, I was on both the United States International Rifle Team and the Marine Corps Rifle Team), but also skeet and, to a lesser extent, pistol matches, and I was doing so much shooting, I had no choice but to hand load my own ammunition because store-bought ammo was much too expensive. Also, I could hand load more accurate ammo than I could buy commercially. This is a common practice among avid shooters, who fire hundreds of rounds in practice for every one they fire in competition. Of course, the media would likely label us as crazy NRA type gun nuts (I've been a member of the NRA since 1949), even though most of the competitors I shot with never even went hunting and were certainly no threat to other humans. It's a real shame that a few crazies have been able to give a bad name to a sport that so many millions of us so peacefully enjoy, just because the sport involves guns.

This black and white photo shows a row of trees covered with a thick layer of hoarfrost. The ice crystals have artfully settled on the branches and twigs, indicating the cold December temperatures. The structures of the hoarfrost can be seen clearly and in detail and contrast strongly with the dark sky in the background. An old stone wall runs in the foreground of the picture, creating a historical and timeless atmosphere. The shadows of the trees fall on the wall, creating a play of light and shadow. This photo was taken on the Wülzburg, a former fortress near the Franconian town of Weißenburg in the Altmühltal Nature Park.

If I'd have been shown this photo I would have assumed it was an Orca attacking a Dolphin. But all is not as it seems, as this male Orca is one of the salmon-eating "residents" off Vancouver Island. "Transient" Orcas (aka Bigg's Killer Whales) feed on seals and dolphins but these Pacific White-sided Dolphins were pestering the Orcas to try and steal salmon. Fish-eating Orcas are highly vocal and we dropped a microphone into the water to listen to their "singing", which was amazing. But mammal-eating Orcas are largely silent in stealth mode when they are hunting. The two Orcas look rather similar but the Dolphins clearly know the difference as they would have high-tailed it out of there if these were Bigg's Killer Whales, presumably recognising them by their silence. For interest here is a Bigg's Killer Whale and I wrote about them in more detail under this photo: www.flickr.com/photos/timmelling/53180099539/in/photolist

This photo of a Dolphin and Orca together was taken in the Johnstone Strait off the NE coast of Vancouver Island in Canada a few days ago. And the title "What's Going On" was of course from Marvin Gaye's 1971 single and album (but without a question mark).

I have been wanting to try these for a while - and thanks to some very helpful tips from Corrie , who is an absolute master of water droplet photography, I gave it a go. I am pretty happy with this one - although clearly I still have some focus issues.

Clearly, some of our younger squirrels have a LOT to learn when it comes to stashing nuts away for the winter months.

We see them grabbing a nut, whole or shelled, and then hurrying off to bury it. But more often than not, just a mere arm's length away from the Goodie Bowl they found it in! Or they'll even bury it in any random place they can find - like between this owl garden statue and giant mushroom statue, seen here!

The places are usually so random it seems impossible that they'll remember where they buried those nuts in a few months. More than likely, other squirrels have happened across those nuts and eagerly snatched them up right then and there.

And don't get me started on all those nuts, and trees or vines we find in our outdoor potted plants. But on second thought, perhaps that makes more sense because they are fixed locations. LOL!
