Clacton-on-Sea
Clacton-on-Sea is the largest town in the Tendring peninsula and district in Essex, England, and was founded as an urban district in 1871. It is a seaside resort that saw a peak of tourists in the summer months between the 1950s and 1970s. With restored Victorian pier with a funfair, amusement arcade, eateries, aquarium and tenpin bowling.
A good mix of 1960s and '70s cars with examples from the big four domestic makers of the time.

Despite being such a popular place for daytrippers and holidaymakers I haven't found too many Clacton postcards of interest to me. There's no obvious large car park, which is a shame because they'd offer some fantastic potential.

Clacton on Sea
Clacton-on-Sea is the largest town in the Tendring peninsula and district in Essex, eastern England, and was founded as an urban district in 1871. It is a seaside resort that saw a peak of tourists in the summer months between the 1950s and 1970s.
In 1936,
Billy Butlin bought and refurbished the West Clacton Estate, an amusement park to the west of the town. He opened a new amusement park on the site in 1937 and then, a year later on 11 June 1938, opened the second of his holiday camps. This location remained open until 1983 when, due to changing holiday tastes, Butlins decided to close the facility. It was then purchased by former managers of the camp who reopened it as a short-lived theme park, called Atlas Park. The land was then sold and redeveloped with housing.

Like a lot of beach towns in the south of England, Clacton-on-sea has a lot of beach huts, mostly in nice pastel tones that said "we're ready for you portra 400". But alas I only had my Sony with me :)
I wish I'd framed this one slightly better, with the blue one more in the shot, but at the time I think I was going for the "continuous row" look, and I suspect it'd have worked a bit better had I left more room instead. But I thought I should publish as I enjoying seeing other parts of the world through other people's photography, and these huts are an oddly English thing: I want to go to the beach, but I still want to have my own tiny castle there.
I had a quick trip to Clacton today to record the new signalling following the three week shutdown for the renewal of both track and signals in the station area. Alas Clacton station was just on the cusp of the cloud with still unbroken blue skies over the North Sea just as I arrived. However a brief gap in the cloud for a minute or two did enable me to grab some sunny shots including this view of the newly arrived 321s from Liverpool Street and two brand new 720s awaiting their next assignment.

Another independently-owned vehicle on National Express Rapide work is MAN SR280 JLS 2V, resting between duties at Birmingham Digbeth. New to Park, Hamilton in May 1980, it went to Tanners Croft, Redditch in 1984 and arrived ith its owner here, Sapphire of Clacton-on-Sea, in 1986. It finished its life in Cumbria with Hunter, Grange-over-Sands, where it became AXI 9344, and then to Peruzza, Kendal, and finally to Wright, Millport in 1993.
If you're old enough perhaps it will remind you of E.T. from the 1982 film! Spotted on the front of a beach hut at Clacton-On-Sea!
I really liked the toy library posts they had along the beach at Clacton-on-Sea, both conceptually and the lovely colourful handprinted boxes. I liked the huts too, so this combo was too good a photo op not to take.
I have to confess I was also taken in by the pale, slightly overexposed, pastel colour cliché, but Clacton had that vibe: a lot of the beach huts had wonderful pastel paint schemes, and the lighting was again that British "the sun is somewhere just behind the cloud" bright but pale look.

A shot like this would be impossible today , as you would be standing on a 6 lane road . Where the M11 peels of London's North Circular Road .
I haven't been able to pinpoint where this place was but close to First Avenue apparently. I'm guessing that means it was on Marine Parade but no doubt it's all changed so much there over the last sixty years it's difficult to suggest exactly where. Lovely example of a smaller Regent outlet and the cars are splendid as is the overall quality of the image. Plenty of signs to read too!

A few shots taken in Clacton-on-Sea on a very warm and sunny second Saturday in August 2025 which capture some members of the Konectbus fleet at work in the town.
The final shot sees Konectbus former Norwich Park & Ride liveried Alexander Dennis Enviro 400 type number 630 - SN65 OAL making the turn from Pier Avenue onto Jackson Road while working the above Colchester via Weeley and Frating bound service 76 journey.
Originally delivered new to in September 2015 wearing the dual green Norwich Park & Ride livery, as we can see number 630 now carries the latest Konect livery with additional route branding for services 74 & 76. This vehicle last appeared before my camera in Norwich on 12th May 2021 - see below.
A timber-clad observation room, formally a coastguard lookout, stands above a Martello tower which is set within a dry moat and situated at the junction of Marine Parade West and Tower Road, Clacton Essex, overlooking the promenade

The lookout rests on a metal gantry with legs set into

We sometimes take for granted what’s right in front of us and look far more beyond our needs. We are busy looking for something that sometimes we forgot that the beauty is just around us.
