The gardens on Clacton's Upper Promenade are a popular spot for locals and visitors alike to while away the time admiring the planting displays. Here the gardens present a riot of colour when photographed in July 2008.
An aerial view of the Clacton sea front. This postcard isn’t dated, but the photograph must have been taken between 1914 when the new band pavilion was built, and 1936 when the bandstand in its centre was replaced by a stage.
The station has history going back to 1882,. The building with the impressive frontage now also houses some catering and retail outlets. Clacton-On-Sea Station is the terminus station at the end of what is sometimes called The Sunshine Coast Line.
There is also a maintenance depot alongside the station.
This postcard was sent in 1911. A caption on the back of the card reads: ‘Clacton-on-Sea is an important watering place on the East Coast. It is within easy reach of London, and in summer there is steamboat communication between London, Ipswich, Harwich, Yarmouth, etc. It has a fine Marine Parade and during the season a splendid band discourses excellent music to the delight of the visitors.
The Postcard
A Valentine's Series postcard that was printed in Great Britain.
On the back the publishers modestly state that they are 'Famous Throughout the World'.
The card was posted in Clacton-on-Sea on Thursday the 22nd. July 1909 to:
Miss Alice Lyon,
63, Horseferry Road,
Westminster,
London S.W.
The message on the divided back of the card was as follows:
"37, Cambridge Road,
Clacton-on-Sea.
22/7/09.
Dear A,
I am down at the old spot, you see.
It's very nice down here, quite as
good as Clapham Road!
The weather so far is first rate -
the first 3 days were hot, but
yesterday and today there has
been a strong breeze which suits
me.
I have not seen anyone I know,
and I don't suppose I shall now.
I am just off to make some
remarkable feats in swimming.
I must give lessons on my return.
I hope you are A1.
Kindest regards,
Yours sincerely,
J. Harris".
Clacton-on-Sea
Clacton-on-Sea is the largest town in the Tendring peninsula in Essex, England, and was founded as an urban district in the year 1871. It is a seaside resort that saw a peak of tourists in the summer months between the 1950's and the 1970's.
The town's economy continues to rely significantly on entertainment and day-trip facilities, and it is strong in the service sector, with a large retired population.
In 1936, Billy Butlin bought and refurbished the West Clacton Estate, an amusement park to the west of the town. He opened a new amusement park on the site in 1937, and then, a year later on the 11th. June 1938, opened the second of his holiday camps.
This location remained open until 1983 when, due to changing holiday tastes, Butlins decided to close the facility. It was then purchased by former managers of the camp who reopened it as a short-lived theme park, called Atlas Park. The land was then sold and redeveloped with housing.
