Clacton-on-Sea is the largest town in the Tendring peninsula and district in Essex, eastern England, and was founded as an urban district in 1871. It is a seaside resort that saw a peak of tourists in the summer months between the 1950s and 1970s.

The town's economy continues to rely significantly on entertainment and day-trip facilities and it is strong in the service sector, with a large retired population. The north-west part of the town has two business/industrial parks. In the wider district, agriculture and occupations connected to the Port of Harwich provide further employment.

Most likely the above photograph was taken some time before the beginning of the Great War in 1914 . It would be apt to suppose that images of more fortunate folk promenading and generally having themselves a happy time would not have been thought proper whilst men were daily being killed in their thousands .

The Postcard

A postcard bearing no publisher's name. The image is a glossy real photograph.

The card was posted in Clacton-on-Sea using a 1d. stamp on Friday the 25th. June 1937. It was sent to a recipient who lived at:

134, Farmer Road,

Leyton,

London E 10.

The pencilled message on the divided back of the card was as follows:

"61, Wellesley Road,

Clacton-on-Sea.

Dear V,

Plenty of people down

here, & the weather is

grand.

Looking forward to Mr. R.

coming tonight (Friday).

Very comfortable

diggings - it's like being

at home.

With love to Auntie,

Clacton-on-Sea is the largest town in the Tendring peninsula in Essex, England, and was founded as an urban district in the year 1871. It is a seaside resort that saw a peak of tourists in the summer months between the 1950's and the 1970's.

The town's economy continues to rely significantly on entertainment and day-trip facilities, and it is strong in the service sector, with a large retired population.

In 1936, Billy Butlin bought and refurbished the West Clacton Estate, an amusement park to the west of the town. He opened a new amusement park on the site in 1937, and then, a year later on 11 June 1938, opened the second of his holiday camps.

This location remained open until 1983 when, due to changing holiday tastes, Butlins decided to close the facility. It was then purchased by former managers of the camp who reopened it as a short-lived theme park, called Atlas Park. The land was then sold and redeveloped with housing.

A Very Fast Greyhound

So what else happened on the day that the card was posted?

Well, on the 25th. June 1937, the eleventh annual English Greyhound Derby was held at the track at London's White City Stadium.

It was won by Wattle Bark, who set a new record for fastest speed by running the 500 yards (460 m) in 29.26 seconds.

Wattle bark incidentally is the bark of certain Acacia species, notably Acacia mearnsii (black wattle), that is rich in tannins. These tannins have historically been used for tanning leather and producing waterproof adhesives. The bark is also used in some traditional medicinal applications and as garden mulch.

Mary Pickford

Also on that day, Mary Pickford and Charles "Buddy" Rogers were married in a simple ceremony in Los Angeles.

Robert Coleman Richardson

The 25th. June 1937 also marked the birth, in Washington, D.C., of the American experimental physicist Robert Coleman Richardson. Robert died in 2013.

This is one of the most important post-war Anglican churches in East Anglia. It was built in 1965 to the design of Ray Gould, and is full of 1960s confidence. It is entirely Anglican - the holy end, the pulpit and lectern, the lady chapel - it really couldn't be anything else. The exterior is dramatic with an unsymmetrical rising bell tower. To the west of the church is an ecclesiastical village - the hall, offices, the rectory, etc. It is hard to imagine that a CofE church of this scale and confidence will be built in England again, since they all seem to be ecumenical sheds these days. The east end is focused on a vast dalle de verre window by Rosemary Rutherford (Hinderclay, Boxford, Bradfield St Lawrence, etc). The other windows in the church are resettings of earlier windows by her from the preceding Victorian church. The church gets a full page in the colour plates section of the revised Pevsner, with as many photos as Thaxted church gets. The couple on duty were delightful, and insisted on showing me around. The church's presence is enhanced by its somewhat suburban setting, albeit only a few hundred yards from Clacton's main drag.
