September 4, 2019 - "In 1901, the 1,200 foot-wide gorge at Milepost 18.6 was spanned by the famed Steel Cantilever Bridge. At the time, the 215 foot high structure was the tallest railroad bridge of its kind in the world. It was one of many reason the White Pass Railroad was designated an International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark, a title shared with the likes of the Statue of Liberty, the Eiffel Tower, and the Panama Canal.
Retired in 1969, the bridge remains a symbol of the White Pass & Yukon Route and the centerpiece of the company logo." Text from White Pass Scenic Journey" Official White Pass Collection book.
My shore excursion this afternoon was the: White Pass Rail & Klondike Highway. "Presented in multiple languages, marvel at some of North American's most breathtaking sites with a coach ride through Skagway then on to the Klondike Highway and up through West White Pass. Here, you'll stare in wonder at the mountaintop's other-worldly appearance. At an elevation of over 3,000 feet, this lunar-looking area boasts 300-year-old stunted juniper trees and dwarfed spruces that only stand two or three feet tall. Once you reach Fraser, British Columbia, you'll transfer to the White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad, a narrow-gauge "Scenic Railway of the World." Built in 1898 for easy access to the gold fields, the vintage cars have been fully restored, with large picture windows that frame the breathtaking panorama of mountains, glaciers, gorges, waterfalls and tunnels. You'll travel the opposite side of the White Pass, down into the canyon and chug into downtown Skagway where you can disembark for shopping before returning to your ship."

Have you ever thought how many cracks produced by earthquakes destroyed hundreds of thousands of housing each year and how hundreds of thousands of people could build their own houses if they are trained by construction experts to give them a sense of belonging and help to overcome the aftermath of an earthquake.

NI Water has installed a modern new wastewater treatment unit at Knock Terrace just outside Rathfriland as part of its multi-million pound Rural Wastewater Investment Project.
The modern infrastructure now in place at the housing development off the Lisnacroppin Road, includes a new fully enclosed hi-tech tank with advanced treatment processes that will raise the quality of treated effluent in line with the latest EU Directives.
Commenting on the scheme, Bill Gowdy, acting Director of Engineering Procurement at NI Water said: “The Rural Wastewater Investment Programme is a dedicated package of work being carried out by NI Water to upgrade wastewater facilities in villages and hamlets spanning the length and breadth of Northern Ireland where the population is less than 250 people.
“This dedicated rural scheme is both complex and logistically challenging but the rewards are far-reaching in terms of environmental improvements. Each project represents a significant investment by NI Water to implement the latest technology available to raise the standard of wastewater treatment so that rural communities can benefit from improved air and river water quality. We are delighted to be able to bring this modern technology in wastewater treatment to Knock Terrace to create a better environment for local residents.”
Over the last four years, over 90 villages across Northern Ireland have benefitted from work carried out under NI Water’s award-winning Rural Wastewater Investment Programme. Locally these include: Monteith WwTW (Katesbridge); Corbet WwTW (outside Banbridge); Ballyward Road WwTW; Katesbridge Road WwTW; Drumaroad WwTW; Attical WwTW; Ballycoshone Road WwTW (Hilltown); Maghera WwTW (Newcastle).
Work on the programme is being carried out by Maghera-based BSG Civil Engineering and joint venture partners, Williams Industrial Services from Mallusk, with project management support being provided by Belfast-based McAdam Design.
Civil Simplified workshops are designed to provide practical insight on Engineering projects, which is critical for every Civil Engineering student.

With air travel, arrival means that you have been delivered into an airport whose ramps and access roads comprise the gateway to your destination city. The civil engineering of these passages is seldom if ever to the human scale – its morphology devoted to berms, drainage, and the turn radius of continuous automobile traffic. When making these exposures in the summer of 2013 it occurred to me that a figure standing amid such features is likely to be in violation of traffic laws.
