Mr. H.J. Rogers is a man who ordinarily deals in heavy things, such as his paper and pulp mills. Within the past few days, however, he has changed his tactics, or rather ... he has gone in for light transactions. He has purchased the exclusive right for illuminating the towns of the Fox River Valley with the Edison electric lamp.
- The Appleton Post, July 27, 1882
By 1880, Thomas Edison had already demonstrated his system for generating electricity with low-resistance generators that delivered power to low-resistance incandescent bulbs. One of the first locations for the application of Edison's demonstration was Appleton, Wisconsin, located on the Fox River just 30 miles southwest of Green Bay. On September 30, 1882, the Vulcan Street Plant in the Appleton Pulp Mill became the first central-station plant in the world to generate electricity by combining the latest advances in hydro-power sites with one of Edison's new electrical generators.
The Edison Company had already begun to generate electricity with steam power 26 days earlier at its Pearl Street plant in New York City, but steam-generated electricity proved more expensive. Within four years of Appleton's pioneering effort, nearly 50 hydroelectric generating projects were announced throughout North America and, by the turn of the century, hydroelectric power accounted for more than 40 percent of the United States' total electricity supply.

September 4, 2019 - "In 1901, the 1,200 foot-wide gorge at Milepost 18.6 was spanned by the famed Steel Cantilever Bridge. At the time, the 215 foot high structure was the tallest railroad bridge of its kind in the world. It was one of many reason the White Pass Railroad was designated an International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark, a title shared with the likes of the Statue of Liberty, the Eiffel Tower, and the Panama Canal.
Retired in 1969, the bridge remains a symbol of the White Pass & Yukon Route and the centerpiece of the company logo." Text from White Pass Scenic Journey" Official White Pass Collection book.
My shore excursion this afternoon was the: White Pass Rail & Klondike Highway. "Presented in multiple languages, marvel at some of North American's most breathtaking sites with a coach ride through Skagway then on to the Klondike Highway and up through West White Pass. Here, you'll stare in wonder at the mountaintop's other-worldly appearance. At an elevation of over 3,000 feet, this lunar-looking area boasts 300-year-old stunted juniper trees and dwarfed spruces that only stand two or three feet tall. Once you reach Fraser, British Columbia, you'll transfer to the White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad, a narrow-gauge "Scenic Railway of the World." Built in 1898 for easy access to the gold fields, the vintage cars have been fully restored, with large picture windows that frame the breathtaking panorama of mountains, glaciers, gorges, waterfalls and tunnels. You'll travel the opposite side of the White Pass, down into the canyon and chug into downtown Skagway where you can disembark for shopping before returning to your ship."

Level 6 course delivered in Block mode and in a normal semester long course. Block course students only come together as a group twice over two weekends. The plan makes use of Web 2.0 tools and mobile devices to enhance the sense of community and take advantage of learner generated learning context (Block students are already out doing the stuff day in day out.). This could also help the students in the class as they can leverage off the authentic content and context generated by the Block students.

The Brooklyn Bridge is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the United States. Completed in 1883, it connects the New York City boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn by spanning the East River. With a main span of 1,595.5 feet (486.3 m), it was the longest suspension bridge in the world from its opening until 1903, and the first steel-wire suspension bridge.
A $725 million project to replace the approaches and repaint the bridge was scheduled to begin in 2009.
It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1964 and a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark in 1972.
The bridge has carried horse-drawn and trolley traffic. Currnetly it has six lanes for motor vehicles, with a separate raised walkway along the centerline for pedestrians and bicycles.
Due to the roadway's height (11 ft (3.4 m) posted) and weight (6,000 lb (2,700 kg) posted) restrictions, commercial vehicles and buses are prohibited from using this bridge.
The two inside traffic lanes once carried elevated trains of the BMT from Brooklyn points to a terminal at Park Row via Sands Street. Streetcars ran on what are now the two center lanes (shared with other traffic) until the elevated lines stopped using the bridge in 1944, when they moved to the protected center tracks. In 1950 the streetcars also stopped running, and the bridge was rebuilt to carry six lanes of automobile traffic.
