River Dargle Flood Defence Scheme.
These images were taken during the third week of August 2012, tracking the on-going river bank alterations and excavation of the river bed.
In preparation for the river-bank strengthening/protection along this stretch of the river, a 2nd channel was created -- with the intention of diverting the river.
Unseasonably heavy overnight rains caused water levels to rise, resulting in local flooding.
It would be necessary to bring in pumps to assist with the repeated drainage.

WALKING WITH HERD
Standing underneath this bridge made me wonder if a baby elephant has this view on the world when it is walking with its mother in the herd.

This is part of the construction site I worked at all summer as a student for EllisDon. In order to prepare for the 2015 Pan American Games, Toronto is finally building rails that will connect Pearson Airport to Union Station. Toronto is one of the only major cities in the world that doesn't have rail links connecting their downtown to their airport, so the construction of the Union Pearson Express is eagerly anticipated. The section of the rails I worked on is just west of Union Station. This 200 million dollar project involves excavating 2 rail corridors 8m below ground in order to pass under a major road. Trains still have to run through our construction site daily so that makes for a challenging yet exciting job! In this picture I am standing in the most southern part of our project right by Lake Ontario. Here you get a great view of the CN Tower and Gardiner Expressway!
The Västlänken mess. We will have to put up with this obstacle course for another seven years, as there is not a cat in hell's change that it will be finished by the promised date of 2026. Another section has run out of money and come to a standstill.

Gabions consist of steel ‘baskets’ filled with rock pieces. They are filled and then fixed together to provide protection and strength to the existing river bank. They allow ground water to flow through them which helps prevent waterlogging of the bank behind them. Existing examples of these can be seen (here) on the North bank to the rear of the La Vallee Apartments.
Long shallow versions of gabions, known as ‘mattresses’, are used to protect the edges of the river channel, particularly at bends in the river.
