Gilt-silver phiale mesomphalos

Greek Classical period, late 5th century B.C.

Lent by Mary and Michael Jaharis

Little Classical Greek silver plate survives. The golden figural decoration on these examples calls to mind the Athenian red-figure vases, and scholars have debated whether such precious vessels inspired the painted vases. On this beautifully preserved libation vessel, four youths hunt deer on horseback with spears. The artist made clever use of the circular shape to show the hunters circling their quarry.

Circular Quay is a CityRail station located in Sydney, Australia and is situated on the City Circle line. The station is elevated with the elevated Cahill Expressway roadway directly above it, and lies directly behind the Circular Quay ferry terminals from which services operate to a number of locations around Sydney Harbour. The area is also the terminus for a number of bus services. Circular Quay is the nearest railway station to the Sydney Opera House and The Rocks area of Sydney, and provides spectacular views of Sydney Harbour and the Sydney Opera House.
