Payerne Abbey was a Cluniac monastery at Payerne, Canton of Vaud, Switzerland.
The first church was built in the 10th century. In 960 it was expanded following the model of the Church of Cluny and the entrance hall was extended. A second building phase began in the middle of the 11th century, which brought the church to approximately its current appearance. A new nave was added around 1070-80.

This Grade II*-listed church in the beautiful Northamptonshire village of Grendon is built from limestone rubble with ironstone dressings. In the church are the remains, in the form of two rounded arches, of the original 12th century building. The two eastern bays of the nave arcades and the chancel were rebuilt between 1368 and 1380, with the clerestory being added in the 15th century along with the four-storey tower.
On the far right of the picture can be seen the beautiful Grade II-listed war memorial. The aftermath of the First World War saw the biggest single wave of public commemoration ever with tens of thousands of memorials erected across England. The one at Grendon dates from 1920, and like virtually all others has been updated to commemorate those lost in WWII. The memorial stands in the south-east corner of the churchyard.
The difficulty with sharing these photos is that they are part of a series, with a theme - the idea of ‘reading’ a region through its signs, its architecture, its culture and aesthetic. Posting photos sequentially doesn’t really translate the same way - the casual viewer who stumbles across this image, for instance, probably sees simply another travel photo of an interesting church or building - which it is, of course, but in the context of the series it has other meanings too, which too easily are overlooked or lost.
Still, in the spirit of signs and themes, here is a frontal view of the Benedictine Arch-Abbey of Kloster Beuron, in the upper Danube Valley in Baden Wurttemberg. I hope you enjoy it.
San Francisco de Asis Mission Church is a historic and architecturally significant church on the main plaza of Ranchos de Taos, New Mexico. Built between 1772 and 1816, when New Mexico was part of the Vice-Royalty of New Spain, it is one of the finest examples of a Spanish Colonial New Mexico mission church.
The church was the subject of several paintings by Georgia O'Keeffe and photographs by Ansel Adams, Paul Strand and Ned Scott.

Whether one is a believer or not, the soft light and simple beauty of this space can hardly fail to lift the spirits and induce a mood of contemplation.
The original church was built in 1902 and became a cathedral in 1968. Then in the early hours of Christmas morning in 1974 it was razed to the ground by Cyclone Tracy. Nothing but the front wall and portico were left standing; while around it the City of Darwin lay in near total ruin.
The new Cathedral was consecrated in 1977 with the Archbishop of Canterbury in attendance. The design incorporated the surviving portico as a memorial of Tracy’s devastation and of Darwin’s resolve that forces of destruction were not going to have the last word.

The temple in Idaho Falls was announced on March 3, 1937. The building was designed by the church board of temple architects: Edward O. Anderson, Georgious Y. Cannon, Ramm Hansen, John Fetzer, Hyrum Pope, Lorenzo Snow Young. The exterior of the temple was completed in September 1941 and the interior was expected to be completed the following year. However, with World War II shortages, it delayed the completion of the temple for four more years. In spite of delays, church president George Albert Smith dedicated the Idaho Falls Temple just one month after the war ended, on September 23, 1945. The temple was built on a 7-acre plot, has four ordinance rooms and nine sealing rooms, and has a total floor area of 92,177 square feet.
In March 2015, the temple closed for renovations that were expected to last 18 months. The renovations took nearly two years and following their completion, a public open house was held from April 22 through May 20, 2017. The temple was rededicated by Henry B. Eyring on June 4, 2017. -- Courtesy LDS and Wikipedia

A little info...personal notes!
Earl Park Indiana is where my Grand parents lived. When I was a kid, I used to spend my summers with them in this town. This was my 1st time back in a long time! My Grandpa, used to be caretaker of this church. We attended it every Sunday. I used to mow the yard here. I am very glad to see it is still standing and in excellent repair. If you ever go this direction, this little town is worth a look!
Hope you enjoy the pic's from this area.

The Church of San Giovanni Battista is located in the alpine village of Mogno in the Canton of Ticino, Switzerland. It was built between 1992 and 1996 on the site of an older church, which was destroyed by an avalanche in 1986.
The church was designed by the Swiss architect Mario Botta who used marble and granite from the valleys of the area.
The photo shows the "church steeple" with the bells, which is also used as a water drain from the roof.

The Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady, commonly known as the Rotunda of Mosta or the Mosta Dome, is a Roman Catholic parish church in the town of Mosta, Malta. It was built between 1833 and the 1860s in neoclassical style.
The design of the present church is based on the Pantheon in Rome, and at one point it had the third largest unsupported dome in the world.

I was less interested here in the architecture than I was in the sense of mysticism, spirituality, that these spires against the dark sky and feathery clouds seemed to embody.

This church was built as a Greek Revival structure in 1854, with a front gable, low pitched roof and tall, narrow windows. The Gothic Revival belltower was added in 1886. It is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places and serves today as a church and cultural center.
Powellville is a once bustling, now miniscule community on Eastern Shore, Maryland. With fewer than 200 residents and a single side street, it's easy to miss the town which once comprised multiple churches, a shirt factory and saw and grist mills and other businesses. As the forest disappeared due to logging and agriculture became the primary industry in the area, the town still had a role serving the needs of residents in the region, but eventually, it has virtually disappeared, This "double church" is an oddity that reflects the contraction of this town. From the Daily State News, Aug. 22, 2022: "The former St. John’s Episcopal Church, at right, and White’s Chapel Protestant Church, operated independently for decades, but were united and physically joined in 1964 as Powellville United Methodist Church. While the(y) look like double churches, the building on the right is now used as a sanctuary for services and the one at left is used as fellowship hall where the Ruritan Club hosts monthly meetings."

The Church of St Michael was built by the Chancellor of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania Leonas Sapiega between 1594 and 1597 for a convent of Bernardine nuns, and also to serve as a family mausoleum. Its construction work was completed in about 1604. During the war with Moscow the Church was burned and plundered, however, it was restored between 1663 and 1373. The adjoining bell tower was built in the 18th century. In tsarist times the Church was closed down, but returned to the Sapiega family in 1903 and restored through their efforts. Later the Church was repaired once again. In 1956 the Church opened as the Museum of Architecture. The interior of the Church is various and of great interest. The early 17th-century marble altar and a few 17th-century tombstones have survived. The one commemorating Leonas Sapiega and his two wives is the largest memorial in Lithuania. In 2009 the Church opened as the Church Heritage Museum.

Genadendal (the name means Valley of Grace), near Greyton in the Western Cape, is the oldest Moravian Mission in Africa, dating back to 1738. To get there, you drive through Genadendal village, a 'coloured' community where the impacts of apartheid and poverty are all too visible. You turn down the hill, and suddenly you are in a place of unexpected serenity and calm, the old Moravian Church and Mission station. The apparent tranquillity belies a turbulent history, however, intimately bound up with South Africa’s colonial and apartheid pastTaken over a ten-year period, between 2012 and 2022, this series of photographs is from a project on South African country villages and towns. Many of the images are of small Karoo towns, and many of these in turn are of the Dutch Reformed Churches whose steeples are visible for miles around in the vast, semi-desert region that lies, metaphorically and geographically, at South Africa’s centre.
There is something about these Karoo towns, in particular, that has always spoken to me - the stillness of the empty streets in the heat of the day, the white, shuttered cottages, the big skies overhead. And always, at the edge of town, or sprawling out into the arid land, the coloured settlement or African location. In South Africa, as elsewhere, as Faulkner wrote, ‘The past is never dead. It’s not even past.’
