Townhill Presbyterian Church, Portglenone, Co.Antrim.

what are we doing here?

we're giving thanks.

for what, exactly?

for all of our blessings, of course.

I should feel blessed?

you should.

I have a confession to make.

what's that?

I hate your guts.

you do?

I should kick your ass right now.

oh.

but not here. I'll wait outside.

you will?

count on it.

Drummaul Parish Church, Randalstown,

Photographed on Kodak T-Max ISO100.

Not the best framing, but lens restrictions (I was using a Rollei 35AF) and parked cars were hindering a clear view. The height of the spire didn't maki it any easier...

But, as they say in politics, "It is what it is!"

Detail from the Altar Rail at Christchurch in Downend, where I live on the outskirts of Bristol - with the purple altar cloth in the background. The church is rarely open outside of service times, but I was able to get access as it was hosting an exhibition by the local Lincombe Barn Camera Club.

Taken over a ten-year period, between 2012 and 2022, this series of photographs is from a project on South African country villages and towns. Many of the images are of small Karoo towns, and many of these in turn are of the Dutch Reformed Churches whose steeples are visible for miles around in the vast, semi-desert region that lies, metaphorically and geographically, at South Africa’s centre.

There is something about these Karoo towns, in particular, that has always spoken to me - the stillness of the empty streets in the heat of the day, the white, shuttered cottages, the big skies overhead. And always, at the edge of town, or sprawling out into the arid land, the coloured settlement or African location. In South Africa, as elsewhere, as Faulkner wrote, ‘The past is never dead. It’s not even past.’

The Trappist Monastery in Moergestel is a serene religious site known for its peaceful surroundings, historic architecture, and monastic traditions. Today, it is also home to a brewery producing Trappist Beer, a well-known Dutch beer cherished for its authentic monastic craftsmanship.

The beautiful carved lych gate at the Church of St John the Baptist, Bishop's Castle, Shropshire, dates from the Victorian era.

The Old Church of the suburban parish of Keminmaa in northern Finland was erected in 1519-21. In the sparsely populated and very wide Kemi Lapland the church was the most central church of that time.

The church is named after St Michael and there is a church porch in the southern part inside the thick walls and there is a sacristy on the opposite side. You can experience silence and peace from across the centuries in the auditorium.

The Old Church of Keminmaa is creation of the middle-age church architecture. It is built of natural stones.

The old church of Keminmaa is one of Northern Finland's most popular tourist attractions.

The very attractive Church of St Bartholomew in Barbon in Cumbria looks quite old but in fact dates from 1893. It was designed by Lancaster specialist church architects Paley and Austin in the Free Perpendicular style, and is Grade II*-listed. This part of Cumbria was originally Westmorland before the local government re-organisation, and in recent years it has become part of the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

Left: Santa Maria Assunta Cathedral - Duomo di Parma. This is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Parma, Italy. Construction started in 1074. The wide façade, made from blocks of sandstone, was completed in 1178.

Right: San Giovanni Battista Baptistery. Designed by Benedetto Antelami, and built between 1196 and 1216, the Baptistery of Parma is one of the most important monuments of the transition from Romanesque to early Gothic architecture. The octagonal structure, in pink Verona marble, includes four tiers of open loggias with architraved portals.

St Cuthbert's Chapel on Inner Farne, a single-cell building dating to about 1370 though its stonework shows traces of an earlier building before it. The chapel was restored in the 1840s and now seems to be used as a visitor centre come shelter from the weather. The whole site has a long monastic history: St Cuthbert died on Inner Farne in 687 - on the Farne Islands, Northumberland, 13 September 2014

St Andrew's Church is a church within a church. It is a partly redundant grade 1 listed Anglican church in the hamlet of Covehithe in the county of Suffolk.

The oldest surrounding fabric of medieval church dates from the 14th century, although most of it is from the 15th century. A newer small church has been built at the west end of the 17th-century church against the tower. Amazing place

St Mary's Basilica -

St Mary's Basilica or Church of Our Lady Assumed into Heaven is a very large brick-built church in the centre of Krakow in Poland. It mostly dates from the fourteenth century.

The interior of St Mary's has been embellished over the years and is now a polychromatic Baroque masterpiece. This is not usually apparent since the church is quite dark, with only modest lighting and relatively small windows. However, a longer camera exposure reveals that every surface is ablaze with an extraordinary range of colour and decoration.

Bathed in a vivid, jewel-toned light, a striking stained-glass image dominates the frame. The narrow window showcases the Madonna and Child, a powerful modern design rendered in deep blues and vibrant reds. Notice the detail: the Virgin Mary's serene, crowned face and the way the light seems to make her flowing robes glow. This luminous figure stands in sharp contrast to the surrounding texture—the ancient, carved stone wall on the left, bearing faint, weathered reliefs that whisper of centuries of history. It's a powerful visual dialogue between the enduring past and the brilliance of faith.
