The 1st World War Memorial in Elne is unusual in that it uses an adaption of an existing sculpture by Maillol. "La Pomone" is Pomona the Roman Goddess of Plenty. Here, for Maillol, she stands for the universal woman and her promise of maternity which represents all mothers. It is notable that many French 1st World War memorials emphasise the suffering of the grieving women/mothers rather than the heroism of those who died.
Yesterday I posted a photo of a beautiful chestnut tree, framing a house at Long Hill Gardens. It is hard to convey in a photograph the size of this great tree, and how it feels to stand under it. But here's another try. Tonight I cropped the original photograph to get this composition. You can get a glimpse of the house through the leaves.

Chestnut tree in Kressbronn at the shore of Lake Constance in Germany. For the Photo-A-Week-Project.

Samels Farm is located just outside of Traverse City, Michigan in the town of Williamsburg. The site has been declared a Pioneer Farm, meaning that the original families have maintained continuous ownership of the property for at least 100 years. Samels Farm has also been placed on the National Register of Historic Places due to the numerous Native American artifacts discovered from several unique cultures - some dating back to 9000 B. C.
The farm has four old-growth chestnut trees, which are rare in Northern Michigan due to the chestnut blight, and are used to harvest chestnuts and create unique chestnut wood gifts that are used to fund the Heritage Society's preservation efforts.
