Seen at Manchester, Piccadilly Gardens on a 220 service to Tameside Hospital, a service no longer ran by Checkmate.

OK, so the chess board is set up the wrong way (should be a white square in the lower right corner), and it looks like we're both in checkmate (but only because, after he won, my son accidentally nudged his king up one space from the back row).

Still, once I helped him see it, he set himself up for an elegant checkmate -- sacrificed a bishop to free up a rook to protect his queen, which pushed my king to the corner, where he mated it with his other bishop from across the board. Well done, since I'd been playing pretty aggressively with him to that point.

35 - Defeat

I thought a lot about this theme. It was originally going to be silhouettes of the timeless classic of Rock, Paper, Scissors...but then I had the idea of the king that is knocked over to signal a loss in a game of chess. I went for a high contrast scene because I'm getting hooked on black and white and that plays nicely on the chess board and the pieces.

I spent a long time working out how I was going to demonstrate checkmate, and as it turns out, I made one quite significant error. Prize for the person who spots it!

There have been many Arias' in such a short time and like Jett, I just had to have Ms. CheckMate from the spring or fall Dynamite Girl collection of 2011. Now Aria may look different from earlier photos but, she is looking very sexy and chic!
