Close up view of the Checkerd Setwing Dragonfly. It was early when I spotted this one, well camouflaged in the grass. Dragonflies spend theie nights in tree, bushes, and some cases grass. When the mornings are cool, they are easier to approach and photograph. As the sun warms the air, they begin their daily patrol for insects to eat.

Dragonflies are valuable predators that eat mosquitoes, and other small insects like flies, bees, ants, wasps, and very rarely butterflies. They are usually found around marshes, lakes, ponds, streams, and wetlands because their larvae, known as nymphs, are aquatic. Dragonfly and damselfly nymphs are also predatory, feeding on mosquito and other aquatic larva, making them one of man's best friends.
