We held a deworming and health education seminar at La Main Tendre Orphanage and Hands Together to Defend the Children Orphanage. A total of more than 60 children were treated in one day!
We also assessed health at the orphanages and will soon return to address any further health issues.
Big thanks to P.J. Pitts and her partner, Terry, for providing meds and medical care for these vulnerable kids!
And thanks to HERNow for sending an extra nurse to help out. Read more about HERNow at hernow.org/.

Yesterday it was Nixon's turn for his annual checkup at the vet. When we go, both dogs go because if one is left at home there is trouble when the one that got to "go for a ride" comes home. Our vet has a Ring-tail Lemur that roams freely about the clinic and most of the time this fella is moving so fast jumping from one place to another either in the waiting area or in the back that you can barely keep up with it. Yesterday was different, frame 1 shows it landed near where Little Bit and I were waiting for Mike and Nixon to come out of the exam. Frame 2 is while Mike was paying it landed on a chair near us, frame 3 is the reaction of the dogs and frame 4 is them settling into the fact that they can only watch and drool from afar.
This is Devon's mother, Dawn.
We went to see Dr. Madden for Devons checkup. The news is odd and again quite fucking scary!
The tumor markers are higher than the 5 that I quoted last time. They are 26. Now we have seen this number very high before, like in the 50,000 to 75,000 range so IDK. The Nurse Practitioner Cindy Frick said this is confusing because Devon's Torso MRI says no changes. Dr. Dial, The Gamma Knife team, already had an appt. for another Brain MRI scheduled for next month but they've changed it to get him in earlier.
I want to cuss!
I knew this number was rising. I remember that after the first couple of checkups the number was 1. I wrote it that day on flickr. Then the next couple of checkups the number was 5 and everyone convinced me that it was always 5. OK Now the number is 26. Dammit.
You had your one month checkup today and far surpassed my estimate for your weight and length. I guessed you were 8lbs 10oz and 20 inches. You are actually 10.2 lbs and 21 inches! Dr. Arango was thrilled and I was astonished. Now you will probably be relieved to know that you can sleep as long as you like at night without me poking you with a nipple. Not that you seem to mind that much!

I took Edgar to the vets this morning for his checkup. They wanted to do another blood test and see how his kidneys have been doing after getting a few weeks of regular food intake and some kidney medication (Epakitin). This was a different vet from the first visit, and this one noticed a heart murmur that the other vet didn't hear so it seems he has developed it within the last month. The doctor thinks he may have a thyroid problem which would explain the murmur and the kidneys. SOOOO they will call me early next week with the results.
And Edgar was ALOT fiestier this time, probably because he's no longer skin and bones and has much more energy. And I don't think Edgar likes men. When Jeff visits Edgar stays in the office on the cat shelf. The vet this morning was a man, and Edgar spent the couple minutes he was on the exam table pressed up against me with his head buried in the crook of my arm. And then when the vet went to ask the other vet something he curled up in my lap. It was so adorable. This cat is really something else.
Willow went to the vet today for a checkup. In the last two weeks we've been monitoring his weight and overall health. In the beginning he responded to the medication by gaining quite some weight, but the last few days it was getting less. Now we've doubled his medication and we'll see what will happen.
On a plus note he doesn't act sick (yet) end his bloodpressure is fine.
The vet did give us an indication of what might happen when he does get sick. I'm hoping it'll never happen, but it's sadly inevitable.
It makes us feel very aware that nothing is forever, a thought we have to get used to.
Untill now, Willow is doing fine and he's happy and that's what counts most.
Went to the eye doctor today for my regular checkup. All is well; she says I've stabilized (my vision generally gets worse each year) and that I'd be a good candidate for Lasik if I want to take that route. I'm not sure; I have a general aversion to anything slicing my eye open. But it sure would be sweet to see without any help.
She also told me that the medical term for what's in my eye is "nevus" — which just means birthmark, really. (She even took the time to have her receptionist print out the Wikipedia page for me. Now that's service!) But I'd been told by previous doctors that it was a busted blood vessel that just sort of left a stain in my eye. Or something like that. Hell, I was a kid. They were probably making stuff up. Turns out it's just a mole. And they're common, she says. So take a good look at your eyes some time. You probably have a small one in there somewhere.
Also, check out the extreme dilation in my eyes. Yeah, I can't focus on anything and I'm supposed to avoid light. Which means the only thing I can do is go back to bed. Which suits me just fine, since I got a whopping four hours of sleep last night.
Get that mammogram accomplished early!

Although Wrangler is normally a very big cat, he nonetheless topped out a little over his optimal weight and registered almost 25 pounds on the scale. He's down about half a pound since we weighed him at home about a week ago. But the Vet still wants him to loose another couple of pounds, so it is time to put him on diet cat food.

Yes, you read it right. It was my grandfather's last meal. After this soup he was taken to the Jamal Noor hospital for checkup. When his condition worsened he was taken to Patel hospital. He passed away on 10th December, 2011, just before 3 PM (P.S.T). His namaz-e-Janaza was held at Memon masjid, Pahari walli, Shaheed-e-Millad road, Karachi, at 8 PM. He was finally burried at Mehwashah graveyard.
When I was shooting this photograph my grandfather (dada in Urdu) asked me why I wanted to shoot more when I had already shot 4. I, off course, did not have any immediate answer so I kept my camera and had last lunch with him. Little did I know that it would be the final time any of us present there would be having our last meal with him. He was 85 or 86 years old, was born at Bahwanagar, Gujarat province, pre-partition India (British Raj). He, along with his family, immigrated to newly born state of Pakistan in 1948 (Pakistan came into being in August, 1947, ostensibly as an Islamic state). In India he had run a chai dhaba with his elder brother, Ahmad bhai. In Pakistan, he had an edible oil shop at Jodia Bazaar, Karachi. He also had Noor Electric Co., which he had begun with his brother in 1973-74. It was later split in 1984 when Ahmad bhai decided to leave. (Ahmad bhai was my nana and he had begun Bombay Light House).
Haji Moosa Adhia was his full name. He was expert in Indian herbal medicine, what is generally called 'Hikmah' and is practiced by hakims across India and Pakistan. He wasn't educated in this field but through his immense interest he knew almost all the local herbs by their traditional names and knew what uses each had. This allowed him to treat everyone for free, whoever came for his advice. I never saw him charge a fee for his expertise. Many women came from afar for treatment of their knees, a common ailment nowadays among many women. For men, there could be anything from stress to heart disease. He almost always recommended use of honey ('shehed' or 'madh' in Urdu) in one or the other form for many of the diseases. His breakfast almost always had honey as an important component in it. It is to his enduring legacy that I also adore honey and try it with various meals. Another favourite of him were the dry fruits - almonds, cashew, walnuts, dried figs, pistachio, and others. Every winter we would receive some of these from his as his gifts. As I write these lines I can see on my table some of his gifted dry fruits for this winter.
May his soul rest in peace and Sadqa of our beloved Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (salahu alihi wasalam) bestowed on him and all of us by ALLAH. Ameen.
Good Health Before Pregnancy: Prepregnancy Care
- What is a prepregnancy care checkup?
This is the first step in planning a healthy pregnancy. The purpose of this checkup is to look for anything that could have an impact on your pregnancy. Because significant organs develop in a fetus during the first 8 weeks of pregnancy, identifying these factors is essential.
- What happens during a prepregnancy care checkup?
During this visit, your obstetric care provider will make sure you have gotten all the vaccines recommended for your age group, talk about the risk of STIs and how to protect yourself and they will also talk about your diet and lifestyle, medical and family history, medications you take and past pregnancies
- How can I try to be healthier before pregnancy?
The months leading up to your pregnancy are the best time to take steps to be healthier. These steps may include taking prenatal vitamin, keeping your environment safe, stopping the use of unhealthy substances (tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, illegal drugs, and prescription drugs taken for a nonmedical reason), eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and reaching and maintaining a healthy weight (Being underweight or overweight may cause problems during pregnancy).
Cutting back on your daily calories intake and exercising more are great steps to reach a health body weight if you are overweight.

Devons 2nd checkup after Chemo.
We still dont know much. The Nurse Practitioner explained that there are still spots (nodules) on both of his lungs but that they have significantly reduced in size and the cancer markers in his blood work have lowered from 1200 to 800 and then now to 1. So the plan is again to wait and test again in August. Stopping short of saying he is in remission, I suppose the journey continues.
Look at that beautiful peach fuzzyness growing on his head and face!
The Dr did release him so that he can go get his shoulder repaired again from another surgeon. That will probably be soon, we are taking a break now.

The Gurukul Cluster is a large community of migrant workers who settled on the outskirts of Faridibad in Harayana, north India over ten years ago to mine a local quarry. In 1996 the Supreme Court closed the quarry due to the excessive number of Tuberculosis cases in the surrounding communities. Many families are still recovering from the devestating effects mining in the local quary had on their community.

It’s checkup time! “Wait, what? You’re gonna stick a needle in my daughters leg? That’s the size of her index finger! OMG are you kidding?! HEY…be gentle with that thing! OOOOW, Ok really…I FELT THAT! OK now she’s crying. Wow, she’s crying so franticly she has TEARS streaming down her face. She’s NEVER had tears…ever!” Ok so that was dad’s internal reaction to Pixel getting her first shot. My external reaction went more like this. Talking to Pix because she was half sleep and reassuring mom that it would be ok. “It’s just a little prick; she’s sleeping so she probably won’t even feel it. Of course I’m sure, they do this all the time. Even if she cry’s a little it’s better than the alternative.” All of a sudden (Eyes bulge open as she SCREAMS). Again I speak with my internal voice, “You said that was gonna be a little prick? I’ve got a prick for you! OK go away and leave my baby alone! You evil baby nurse!”
Moral of the story don’t make my baby cry with big needles….dad doesn’t like it. Ok that’s not really the moral of the story, more like just stating the facts.
Dr. Putt and the two vet techs that assisted Dr. Kawasaki during Miss Sarie's Surgery. Dr. Putt is the lady in the striped shirt. Notice Miss Sarie's picture on top of the kennel.
Dr. Kawasaki was not available at the time of this picture. I will try to get one of him when I take her back for her checkup.
UPDATE 5:45 PM 12 April
Miss Sarie had her follow up appointment today to have her stitches removed. Everyone was happy to see her. She has a clean bill of health for right now. I will be taking in a urine sample so that her Urine Specific Gravity can be checked for any signs of kidney damage. Pyometra can damage the kidneys.
UPDATE 5:15 AM 9 April
Miss Sarie had a quiet Easter Sunday. She napped most of the day. When she wasn't napping she wanted to be held.
Last night we moved back to my bed. She nestled down and slept peacefully through the night.
This will be her first day alone. I will be leaving for work in about 1/2 hour. She will go through withdrawal. All the attention has made her into quite a spoiled baby!
She goes back to the Vet to have her stitches out on the 12th of April. I probably won't update again until then.
UPDATE 8:15 PM 7 April
Miss Sarie and I went to visit a few folks today. We stopped by the adoption event so everyone could see her. They have been quite concerned about Miss Sarie. They all love her. Miss Sarie is the mascot for the rescue.
Today Miss Sarie was very happy to be held by others. Normally she gets anxious if I am not holding her. She will only stay in someone elses arms for a very short time. But today she was very content and quite a showoff!
UPDATE 10:30 AM 7 April
4 Days since her surgery and she is thriving!
Miss Sarie and I woke up to a light coat of snow on the ground this morning. I took one of her little beds out and laid it on the ground so she could enjoy the fresh smell of the newly fallen snow. She didn't move off of the little bed but she perked up and sniffed all around.
She then came in and decided she would eat her breakfast that she had been ignoring all morning. And is now toddling around checking out all her special places in the dining room.
She woke me up several times last night. She has decided that enough is enough. She wants back in bed with me. Since the surgery I have had her in an extra large laundry basket with bedding on the floor next to me. I have slept on the couch so if she wakes I can easily lay my hand on her. Well last night the hand laying went on all night!
UPDATE 11:45 AM 6 April
Miss Sarie is continuing to recover like she was a puppy! This morning she gave me a little bit of a scare. A few minutes after she was up she vomited the contents of her stomach. It was a very quick non-violent episode. I think she was overheated because she slept nestled into a snuggly donut bed and had a little blanket with her. She got over it quickly and ate her breakfast and drank water with no further episodes. She is resting comfortably now.
Yesterday late afternoon she went to visit Auntie Betty. Auntie Betty adores Miss Sarie. When Miss Sarie first came to me and Betty met her she said that she wanted to take care of Sarie's medical care. For the first 1 3/4 years she paid every bill but then I felt to awkward to let her know about anything that I was doing for Miss Sarie.
We go visit Betty several times a year but we hadn't been to visit since last Fall. On Monday, 2 April, I called Betty because I feared Miss Sarie was not going to make it through this. I wanted to give her a chance to see Miss Sarie before this terrible disease took her away from all of us. Her phone went to her answering machine and I left her a message telling her that Sarie was very sick.
When I didn't hear back from her I assumed she was out of town for Easter vacation. She is retired and travels a lot. On Wednesday evening she called me. I was able to happily tell her that Miss Sarie had been though surgery and was thriving!
She immediately insisted that she wanted to pay for all of the costs. She told me she fully realizes that Miss Sarie is an old dog and that medical costs can be high with an old baby. She said when she made the offer that she meant it no matter how long Miss Sarie is with us. I was amazed at her generosity when she first offered 2.5 years ago but am overwhelmed that she is still committed to this sweet little girl.
Thank you Betty for taking much of the worry off of taking care of Miss Sarie. And for your dedication to this sweet little rescue girl! I will be forever grateful for your selfless act.
UPDATE 11:00 AM 5 April
Miss Sarie had a wonderful night last night. She slept soundly and never woke up once. This morning she ate her breakfast, did her potty duties, took her medicine....and promptly decided she wanted to sleep some more. At the moment she is basking in the sun by the sliding glass door in her donut bed!
UPDATE 8:30 PM 4 April
At about 5 today Miss Sarie and I took a ride to Bob Evans to pick up dinner. We drove to Auntie Teresa's. (Sarie has many Aunties and Uncles!) She toddled around Auntie Teresa's kitchen and rested in a donut bed. When I opened the food I had picked up for Auntie Teresa and me she started whining... YES.. She wanted more food!
When we came home she had her first BM since the surgery. So another Post-Op milestone has been met!
Auntie Teresa sat with me yesterday morning while I waited for Miss Sarie to go into surgery. I didn't want to leave Miss Sarie because I knew she would be upset. That wouldn't have been good for her before surgery. She had her catheter put in about 4 hours before her surgery, so it was a long wait. Auntie Teresa sat with us for about 3 hours waiting! She was shocked tonight to see how amazing Sarie is doing..
We are tuckered out now and are going to bed. Sarie slept most of the day but was active for a few hours this evening. She wanted to be held most of the time.
UPDATE 3:00 PM 4 April
The little darling is doing amazing! She woke me up from a nap at 12:30. She was whining and I could hear her even though I was sleeping deeply.
I picked her up and took her to her puppy pad. She used it again and then ate some more of her Breakfast. I gave her once a day pain meds orally with a syringe. She took it just fine.
A few minutes ago she got restless so I gave her some more food. To my surprise she ate again!
She is making a miraculous recovery!
UPDATE 10:30 AM 4 April
Miss Sarie had a wonderful visit at the Vet this morning. They are amazed at how well she is doing. Her heart is strong, her surgical wound looks good.... There was nothing negative about her at all! Her catheter was removed and she was sent home with me to continue her recovery.
She is an amazing little old gal! Thanks everyone for all your emails, kind words, and prayers. They were a great help to both Miss Sarie and me...
UPDATE 7:15 AM 4 April
Miss Sarie slept well last night. She woke up a couple of times crying. I rubbed her and she fell back to sleep. This morning she used the puppy pad for the first time since the surgery. She also ate a very good breakfast of FROMM's Shredded Duck Entree. She wasn't interested in water so I syringed Pedialyte slowly into her mouth. She accepted it fine. We will be leaving for the Vet's office in about a 1/2 hour.
UPDATE 8:00 PM 3 April
Miss Sarie and I arrived home about 15 minutes ago. She ate almost her normal dinner portion. She is sitting on my lap resting very comfortably. I think sleep will be very light for me tonight!
In the morning at 8:00 we will go back up to the Vet's so she can be checked out. Depending on how she is doing, she may stay for a day of fluids. Her IV catheter is still in so it will easy to set up her drip bag.
UPDATE 4:00 PM 3 April
Miss Sarie survived the surgery. They almost lost her on the table. Her oxygen levels dropped dangerously low. Her uterus was ruptured. Dr. Kawasaki worked fast. He was in and out very quickly. She came to and stabilized fast. She started kicking up a fuss very soon after the surgery. They came out to get me because they knew she wanted me. They are going to let her come home with me tonight because they realize that she is better off with me than at a closed Vet office tonight. I will update more later. I have many pictures to load.
UPDATE 6:00 AM 3 April
Miss Sarie made it through the night comfortably. As soon as we came downstairs she went potty on her pad, drank some water, and started her usual whining at me to pick her up. I woke up several times through the night and laid my hand on her to check her breathing. I am very frightened but hopeful. We will be leaving the house in about 2 hours to go the Old Bridge Veterinary Hospital where Dr. Putts will put in her IV. Dr. Kawasaki will come in at noon and start the surgery. She has not deteriotated over the last 36 hours. I believe she is stronger.
UPDATE 6:30 PM 2 April
Miss Sarie and I stopped at the park on the way to her Vet appointment. Given her grave condition she is actually doing quite well. The two Vet's I spoke with today are not sugar coating her condition. The bottom line is without surgery she will not survive. And she may not survive the surgery or postoperative recovery period. She goes into surgery midday tomorrow. She has to be at the Vet's by 8:30 for IV fluids. They want to make sure she is well hydrated before surgery. They are going to allow me to stay with her while she waits for surgery. I feel much better about that. She does not like me to leave her. Leaving her at home is one thing but in a scary strange place she would be distraught. She ate a wonderful dinner tonight and is resting comfortably on my lap as I type this.
FYI-Pyometra is a disease of the uterus. It is compared to acute appendicitis in humans because both are essentially empyemas within an abdominal organ. It involves the Uterus in unspayed female dogs. Treatment of choice is an emergency spay.
Original Comment
Miss Sarie is very sick. She needs everyone's thoughts and prayers. Yesterday I noticed that she had a pus discharge from her vulva. Given that she has been diagnosed with early kidney disease, I didn't dare wait until this morning to take her to the Vet. They believe she has Pyometra. It is unknown if Sarie was ever spayed. She has never gone into heat in the 2.5 years she has been with me. Even given that they wanted to take her into emergency surgery. They gave me 3 choices, give her antibiotics, emergency surgery, or euthanize. Several of my rescue friends dropped everything and came to the hospital. They reminded me that I have always said no heroics, that I just want to keep her happy and comfortable for whatever time she has left. The odds of her making it through the surgery were not good. Not to mention Woodbridge Animal Hospital's estimate was 1700 dollars. I opted for the antibiotics. Her white blood cell count was 59,000 with 16,000 being the high end of normal. This morning there is no pus and she is eating and drinking. She is also being her demanding primadonna self.
All of my favorite vets are unavailable today. The rescue vet (Dr. Cunningham) van is in the shop today. She can see Miss Sarie tonight. I took a clean catch urine into Old Bridge Vet this morning. I just received a call from them and they said there are a lot of white blood cells in the urine. They also believe she needs surgery because of the white blood cell count. I feel like I am going to just die...
Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers as I try to do what is best for Miss Sarie. Dr. Kawasaki is willing to come in tomorrow on his day off to do the surgery. Dr. Cunningham may be able to do it tonight. I don't want to do this but it is the only chance she has. My heart is breaking.
To my astonishment Tessa received a clean bill of health.
Tessa is a quiet sort of cat and at ten years of age I was concerned she might have health issues. But did she walk like a racoon in the examining room? No. Did she let her tail droop to the floor in the examining room? No. Did she act like a young active cat in the prime of her life? Yes, she did.
Tessa's new vet, Dr. Melanie Armstrong, said her heart is good. Her teeth are good and her ears are clean. Yes, she has a little arthritis but don't we all.
I bought some fish oil to spray on Tessa's food and that was it. Sole can have some of the fish oil too ... and as for me .... Dr Armstrong said it wouldn't hurt. :)
