Moon rising over Mt. Cheam, near Chilliwack, BC, Canada, on Dec 2, 2006 at around 4:15 pm. I was just lucky to notice it in time to get out there and start shooting. A different, and more richly coloured, image than the one in the series I posted earlier.

Mount Cheam’s peak is covered by clouds, but still an amazing setting.

Was heading out to the Great Blue Heron Reserve near Chilliwack when I realized that it doesn't open until ten in the morning. As I am an early bird I looked for somewhere else to go in the area until it would open. So I spent some time at the Cheam Lake Wetlands.

Mt Cheam is a wonderful hike with spectacular vistas at every step. Local families bring their children up to the top starting at a very young age. It is common to view parents with three or four youngsters independently exploring the trail right to the top. Considering the height and loose surface material at the top it seems to be a right of passage and a distinct aspect of local Chilliwack culture. My hiking partners can be seen making their way up the trail. Successful hikers who reached the top include children, dogs, and multigeneration families.

I love to photograph these Trumpeter and Tundra swans when they take flight in the Cheam Wetlands. It's a great place to see them.

Not sure which peak this is but when driving west on Hwy #1 from Hope BC these peaks are to the left of Mount Cheam. Maybe Lady Peak or Baby Munday Peak or something else.

Deroche, BC Canada

The Cheam Range is a mountain range in the Fraser Valley region of the Lower Mainland of British Columbia near the city of Chilliwack. The region is also a part of the Skagit Range of the Canadian Cascades and contains many rugged peaks.

Deroche is a farming and railway community on the Canadian Pacific Railway and BC Highway 7 located approximately 100 km east of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Deroche is adjacent to the eastern end of Nicomen Island, from which it is separated by the Nicomen Slough (NB a different location 3 km away was known as Deroche Landing).

The community is at the foot of Nicomen Mountain and is immediately across the river from Chilliwack Mountain.

The original name of Deroche was Derocier, but the local CPR station was given the current name to honour Joseph Deroche, who settled there in the early 1880s and had moved to BC from Quebec, Canada in 1860 during the gold rush. Deroche died on March 19, 1922, age 99, and some of his descendants still live in the area.

One of the most spectacular views in the Fraser Valley, Mount Cheam offers a 360-degree panoramic view from Chilliwack and the communities along the Fraser River, Jones Lake, the surrounding peaks, and Mount Baker to the south.

Another failed attempted to find Mountain Bluebirds at the Hope Airpark. I dropped into Lake Cheam and the light was full of mist making photographing challenging. I did capture this Bald Eagle perched in it's giant nest with the snowy mountains around Popkum in the background.

The autumn hues on a recent hike up Mt.Cheam were truly spectacular. In the distance from left to right are Mt.Slesse then in the far distance Nooksack Tower and Mt.Shuksan then back in the near distance American Border Pk., Canadian Border Pk., Mt. Larrabee and Mt Tomyhoi.

The only Great Blue Heron I saw at the Lake Cheam Wetlands Park.
