This is a success story of preservation and restoration of traditional Chinese streets and architecture. The streets were saved from demolition, the common fate for most of the old streets to make way for characterless high rises. The preserved streets reflected the look of the late Qing Dynasty. The original streets were residential. They are now mainly restaurants and stores. One can get a taste of what Old Chengdu looked like hundreds years ago.

Characterless alterations have set in so deep with these wood frame houses on State Avenue in Cincinnati's Lower Price Hill neighborhood that I doubt that they would be worth saving, especially considering the other blighted properties nearby that have much more of their original character intact and are in more dire circumstances despite utilizing more heavy-duty brick masonry construction. These buildings date to the 19th Century, but, despite their age, they have very little of their historic character intact, and are thus of much less value than other buildings of a similar age. Wood-frame houses such as these have fared poorly in the city when it comes to historic preservation, as they are flimsier and easier to damage than a brick structure due to their very nature.

The Luhrs Tower: The "characterless" international style buildings in downtown Phoenix tend to overshadow some of the smaller, more intriguing structures.
Fine house built 1725, the cellars are on ground floor with main entrance on first floor. Converted to hotel but a bit 'run down' in recent years. Taken over by Thwaites Brewery who spent a lot of money but result is perhaps a bit characterless.

850 sunset. With most of the class of 50 based at Brno in later years, I got sick of the sight of them but now only a handful of the 43 year old class remain in service and the affection has grown - though partly because their replacement 842s are the most characterless units on CD.

Wondering through Madeira, this little side street was so peaceful compared to the busy town centre during the tourist season. I chose a Black and White effect to emphasise the clean appearance of modern buildings, which some may say appear insignificant themselves, with characterless white walls and block windows. The colour effect, often used in vintage or historic photographs, also creates an atmosphere of this location once being something great or well-loved, which over time has lost it’s credibility, this pushes you to think more about what some of these forgotten places once contained and the history behind them.
The tree’s shadow lying across the pavement seems to create even more quietness that is almost echo-like, it’s clear yet some-what sad looking reflection creates a feeling of loneliness.
This image has some character in the fact that the placement of the tree, being on the corner, is almost waving passers-by in, with it’s reflection looking so sorry for itself, it adds a humorous touch to the image, and almost sparks a sense of guilt within the viewer.
This image illustrates insignificance to me, as it represents one street that has almost been forgotten about, as if this street is only significant to those who live in the apartments surrounding, and very rarely gets a visit from tourists like me.

For this month's Guardian Camera Club assignment I decided to look at the tat and crap that millions of tourists see in London's West End every year. Hopefully I've caught the shots for the assignment in a dark mundane from more of the first person perspective of a tourist rather than an observer. I still can't work out why characterless Leicester Square is mobbed with tourists looking at shops, cinemas and bars that can be found in almost every town but double the price. The ridiculous corporate nonsense of M&M World just sums it up and will probably get more visitors than the average gallery (or am I just weird and this is what people want?). I so hope the gentrification of the East End doesn't go as far.

It's a shame more thought didn't go in to the look of the infill that went here, back in the day. This area of Mount Pleasant has some of nicest heritage houses in the city.
I saw this old bike propped up against a lamp post and thought it would make a great b & w shot were it not for the characterless chain pub next to it. If only it were the pig & weasel It would have been perfect so I thought I'd leave it in like the sore thumb it is.

Notice the bland and characterless sky. I think the best time to take photos in Borobudur is early in the morning - you have to reach there before 4 a.m. We left our hostel at 5 a.m, and by the time we reached at 6 a.m, it was already amazingly bright, and hot!
