unfortunately, the traditional roofs of wood and slate are becoming exceedingly rare. It's all nasty shiny corrugated iron today... A sad development. And one by one, the old traditional, intricately carved houses make place for characterless new ones made with concrete... Go now, these beautiful buildings will soon be gone.
A place I see a lot of, but don't much like. Completely characterless despite all it's premium shops.
Already this spring I planned to go to a concert of Shantel. But unfortunately the concert was cancelled. On the 26th of October he finally came to The Hague with his band Bucovina Club. This is what the BBC wrote about him, when he won the Music Awards: "Where most techno and house was characterless and lacked any organic elements Shantel's managed to mix Gypsy magic with a hi-tech pulse."

The church is a landmark in the busy northern suburbs of Bury St Edmunds.
Designers’ Saturday happens at a place where design is actually created. Designers’ Saturday is not just a product show held on characterless trade fair premises. Instead it is a stage where authentic design skills are put on view at the atmospheric production sites of the companies involved.
This is the point that you come to terms with with the fact that, after four years of alcohol and icy walks through a characterless town centre, you have nothing to show for it but a photograph and a fake occasion.
Little bit by little bit buildings lose their architectural distinction and character. Remove this one element, cover up this other single item. Individually they may not seem like much. Cumulatively, over time a building is diminished to characterless blandness.
Once denuded old and now ugly building are more easily justified to simply tear them down. Often times the first to go is the windows. Hey, they're old and inefficient right? That's a whole 'nother story.

This is a beautiful, simply designed and thoroughly charming place. The house was built by the family's great-grandfather. He built it room by room; saving up money over time and building more onto it when he could afford to. The family have now sold up because properties like this are difficult to maintain; because of major deterioration ploblems due to age and neglect and also because of the poor economic climate. The family have moved into a modern apartment out of town. The person who bought the property is going to tear it down and build an apartment block in its place. I see a lot of this kind of activity in Beirut. If only their were grants for people to help them keep their properties and prevent Beirut from becoming another faceless, characterless concrete jungle. Ho-hum.
Modern yet not characterless. A funny story happened here. I was standing outside the McDonalds - for which the umbrella can be seen to the right of the photo - and I was waiting for someone who was using the restroom. I was flapping around trying to swat away a bee. An old Swedish man came up to me and speaks to me in Swedish, which I do not speak! I laugh politely as if I understood as I imagine he was commenting how silly it was so swat bees. He said something else and when I looked uncomfortable, he carried on.

Stowupland is a long, fairly characterless village on the outskirts of the town of Stowmarket.
People in Norfolk joke about odd people from Suffolk being NFS, meaning 'Normal for Suffolk'. The same abbreviation is used by people in Suffolk to mean 'Normal for Stowmarket', except in Stowmarket itself, where, of course, it means 'Normal for Stowupland'.

It had to happen: the first theft of one of my Paris street paintings has occurred. Not a theft from me, you understand, but a theft from my adopted motherlode; a theft from my redefined patria; a theft from the very people of Paris itself.
Not that you'll be hearing about this mural cleansing on the national, or even local news. But as i walked past this previously bland corner, i realised that someone had decided that it should in fact return to its previous state of unutterably characterless peeling beige paint. And they'd added a new coat of beige paint where once had gloried my 'Shape Shifter 1' just to hammer home the point. But i'm not sad.
Sorrow or bitterness are not the appropriate emotions here. A sort of muted elation would be closer. i somehow feel i've been officially accepted into the small group of Paris street artists who merit having their work degraded, defaced, or quite simply destroyed by the invisible powers that be, as suddenly as it appeared.
Of course, i don't know if it was officially removed by someone who considered it an eyesore or stolen by a wretchedly small-minded admirer who wanted it for their bedroom wall. And i doubt i ever will. i guess that's just part of the fun. But i'd be lying if i said i wasn't hoping for a more constructive reaction next time.

Though I have always admired those log houses, I was told the living condition for residents was rough. There is still no running water inside the house. They had to fetch water from a pump outside the house even in chilly winter when temperature could drop as low as -40C. In the city center where I live, lots of log houses were replaced by characterless box brick buildings. Today, while I came across this scene, my heart almost stopped and my hands were shaking. It was a timeless moment which reminded me how Tyumen looked like just ten years ago before oil boom. As respect of Russian’s patriotism, I quickly snapped two photo far away before being discovered. I did cropped the photo and changed tone (just a little) in photoshop.

Montenegro's unprepossessing capital city, Podgorica, must be one of Europe's smallest, with a population of just over 150,000. Despite the paucity of sights, it has a pleasant atmosphere and a lively cafe society.
When Montenegro was part of Yugoslavia, the city was known as Titograd. This photograph is of its windswept and rather characterless main square, Trg Republika.

Achromatic= absence of color. Pure neutrals contain no information at all about hue. Value contrast exists whether or not hue is present. Value is linear having a beginning and end, whereas hue is circular and continuous. Gray is a sterile neuter, characterless, indifferent, mute, yet easily excitable, dependent on its neighboring colors for life and character.
Middle gray was hard to find. I was hoping that the sheen of the varying middle grays I had would create differing values.
It's not a perfect photo by any means, but it's less generic and characterless than my other decent picture from today.

York left their historic home at Bootham Crescent - a short walk from the city centre - in 2021. The Community Stadium, their characterless new ground, is located on a retail/leisure park, miles out of town and with hopelessly inadequate transport infrastructure.
I love the old trams in Vienna, they have such a lot of character and I hope they are not all replaced by new (characterless and plastic) ones.
This is one of the highest motorway bridges in the area, between Wakefield and Barnsley. Woolley Edge, despite giving you great views of local area, is also home to a large service station. I think this is what makes the place have an uneasy feel to it; being at once a familiar place with character, whist also being a characterless non-place of anonymity.

A Victorian-era Rowhouse with a mid-20th century storefront first floor front extension sits on a street corner near Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. Houses like these show the evolution of the neighborhood from a largely upscale residential area to a more heavily commercialized district. Today, the building is a bit forlorn, but hopefully has had new life breathed into it since this picture was taken, though, judging by VCU's development behavior, it is entirely possible this may get demolished for some characterless modern "improvement" of a development.

The tourist strip in Pokhara, Nepal. Pretty much a super-chilled version of Thamel and equally characterless: trekking and souvenir shops and tourist restaurants, but wide empty roads and no constant calls of "rickshaw madam rickshaw?"/"hash hashish hash?"/"taxi madam taxi?". Without the chaos of Kathmandu, and with added heat and humidity, pace of life in Pokhara is much slower. Take a left here and you're right on the eastern shore of Phewa Tal - a large, tranquil expanse of calm, cool lake. It's difficult to even consider having to return to Kathmandu after this.

If the thought of drinking dishwater appeals, then this thin, grey, characterless soup is for you. One or two small pieces of soft potato and soft leek floated forlornly in it. I tried adding some hot sauce and it made it barely edible. In a country of great soups, this is inexcusable.
