International trade is prohibited by the Wildlife Protection Act in Pakistan. Snow Leopard Foundation (SLF) in Pakistan conducts research on the current status of Himalayan brown bears in the Pamir Range in Gilgit-Baltistan, a promising habitat for the bears and a wildlife corridor connecting bear populations in Pakistan to central Asia. The project also intends to investigate the conflicts humans have with the bears, while promoting tolerance for bears in the region through environmental education. SLF received funding from the Prince Bernhard Nature Fund and Alertis. [3] Unlike its American cousin, which is found in good numbers, the Himalayan brown bear is critically endangered. They are poached for their fur and claws for ornamental purposes and internal organs for use in medicines. They are killed by shepherds to protect their livestock and their home is destroyed by human encroachment. In Himachal, their home is the Kugti and Tundah wildlife sanctuaries and the tribal Chamba region. Their estimated population is just 20 in Kugti and 15 in Tundah. The tree bearing the state flower of Himachal — buransh — is the favourite hangout of this bear. Due to the high value of the buransh tree, it is being commercially cut causing further destruction to the brown bear’s home. [4] The Himalayan brown bear is a critically endangered species in some of its range with a population of only 150-200 in Pakistan. The populations in Pakistan are slow reproducing, small, and declining because of habitat loss, fragmentation, poaching, and bear baiting.

The Chamera Dam impounds the River Ravi and supports the hydroelectricity project in the region. It is located near the town of Dalhousie, in the Chamba district in the state of Himachal Pradesh in India The reservoir of the dam is the Chamera Lake.
After completion of the first phase, the Chamera-I generates 540 MW (3x180 MW) of electricity. The second stage i.e. Chamera-II Dam generates 300 MW (3X100 MW) of electricity. From year 2012, the 3rd stage i.e. Chamera III generates 231 MW (3x77) of electricity.
The unique feature of the region is the fluctuating day and night temperature. The temperature during the day near the dam rises up to 35 degrees Celsius and drops to a minimum of 18 to 20 °C at night.
The water level in the Chamera Lake rises to a maximum of 763 meters while the minimum water level is 747 meters.
The absence of aquatic life in the lake has made it an ideal location for water sports. According to the plan developed by the tourism department, the lake shares the scope of sports activities like rowing, motor boating, paddle boating, sailing, canoeing, angling and kayaking. House boats and shikaras are also available. The government attempts to provide all these facilities to the tourists.

!! Manimahesh Kailash !! spiritual journey !!
! ॐ नमः शिवाय !
About Manimahesh:
Manimahesh is one of the Panch Kailash which is in Chamba District of Himachal Pradesh and the other Kailash are Kailash Mansarovar in Tibet, Adi Kailash in Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand, Shrikhand Mahadev in Kullu District of Himachal Pradesh, and Kinnaur Kailash in Kinnaur District of Himachal Pradesh.
The manifestation of the Lord Shiva is supposed to be a rock formation on top of the mountain that resembles a Shiva Lingam and is known as Manimahesh Shivling. The Mani Mahesh Peak is believed to be visible only to those who are lucky. If Lord Shiva is happy then the peak will be clearly visible and clouds covering the peak denote the displeasure of Lord Shiva.
Manimahesh's etymology refers to a "gem (Mani) on the crown of Lord Shiva (Mahesh)." According to local lore, the moon rays reflected off the jewel can be seen from Manimahesh Lake on a clear full moon night. The Mani Mahesh Peak is also known as Chamba Kailash.
History of Mani Mahesh:
Lord Shiva is thought to have created Manimahesh after marrying Goddess Parvati, also known as Mata Girja. Additionally, it is believed that Lord Shiva paid deep penance here for seven hundred years and gave the Gaddis (the local tribes) a Chuhali topi (pointed cap), which they wear even today along with their other traditional clothing, the Chola (coat) and Dora (10–15 m long black cord). The Gaddis began referring to themselves as Shiva worshippers and named this mountainous region as "Shiv Bhumi" (Land of Shiva).
A Mythology narrates the story of Lord Shiva being deceived at Dhancho, where devotees spend a night on their route to Manimahesh Lake. On being delighted with the zeal of Bhasmasur, a demon and one of his devotees, Lord Shiva blessed him with the ability to touch anyone and turn them to ashes. Bhasmasur intended to use this blessing on Lord Shiva only. As a result, he went after Lord Shiva to touch him and destroy him. Shiva was able to get away and climb the waterfall at Dhancho to seek refuge in a cave behind the falling waters. As a result of Lord Vishnu's intervention, Bhasmasur was unable to cross the waterfall and was deliberately killed. Since then, people revere the Dhancho fall.
Significance of Manimahesh:
The three Lords of the universe namely, Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma, are thought to have their residence in the region of Manimahesh. The Chamba Kailash is regarded as Lord Shiva's heavenly realm. On the approach to Manimahesh Lake, a waterfall that can be seen at the Dhancho was said to be the heaven of Lord Vishnu. A mound that has a view of the city of Bharmaur is described as Bramha's heaven.
The Gaddis also hold the belief that Shiva departs to the underworld and transfers power to Lord Vishnu after spending six months on Mount Mani Mahesh Kailash. Every year, the Gaddis mark Janmashtami, the eighth day of the month of Bhadon (August), the birthday of Lord Krishna (an incarnation of Lord Vishnu), as the day Lord Shiva passes into the underworld. Before the night of his wedding (February or March), Lord Shiva returns to Bharamaur from the underworld, and this day is known as Shivratri.
This time I thought I will share a glimpse of everyday life in the mountains with my Flickr friends.
I took this shot in the interior of Chamba district in Himachal Pradesh, India. The ladies are probably walking and gossiping on the way home from a trip to the local market.:-)
I will be away for a week my friends.I will try and look in sometimes. All the best and take care.

The Mun Peak of Dhauladhar Range stands at 4610 metres above sea level. The Dhauladhar Range is massive range that acts as geographical divide between Kangra and Chamba Districts. The above picture was taken on 25.10.2017 with my Nikon P900 from Bhagsunag, Mcleodganj, Distt. Kangra, Himachal Pradesh. IN.
These three children were up to some mischief in the courtyard of the ancient Chaurasi temple in Bharmour. They were so engrossed that they did not notice me capturing them on my camera.:-)
Bharmour ,now a sub-division of Chamba district in Himachal Pradesh, was the ancient capital of the kingdom of Chamba. It is situated at a height of 7000 feet above sea level in the Budhil valley some 64 kms from Chamba town.
Chaurasi temple is an ancient temple complex built somewhere around the 7th century A.D.It contains 84(chaurasi in Hindi) big and small temples. This is the main temple dedicated to Manimahesh or Siva. The temple complex is the centre of life in Bharmour and is held in great veneration by the people of Himachal, especially the Gaddi tribes who live in this area.
On way back from Indrahar Pass, through Chamba Distt., we passed one night in this small cave at Chhata Parao (2760 meters).
Back to the mountains again.:-)
This is the town of Bharmour in Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh. In ancient times it was called Brahmapura and was the capital of Chamba kingdom.Situated at a height of around 7000 feet above sea level in the Budhil valley it is around 40 miles to the south-east of Chamba town.It is situated between the Dhauladhar and Pir Panjal Ranges of the Himalayas.Bharmour is known for its scenic beauty, apple orchards and ancient temples of which the Chaurasi temple is the most famous. Some of the temples date back to the 10th century A.D.This area is peopled by the semi-nomadic Gaddi tribes who are devotees of Lord Shiva.
The people of this area are very friendly and courteous. When I visited this place on work I was suffering from severe cold and fever so I went to a local doctor. After examining me carefully and giving me medicines he refused to take any fees because I was a guest from a far-off place in his land.:-)Unthinkable in the Indian plains.:-)
